Gu Jiao’s spear sliced clean through the Fifth Protector’s longsword, then she flipped through the air, drove a heavy kick down with a long leg, and struck the Fifth Protector’s head so hard he was knocked to his knees on the spot.

“Old Five!” Several of them cried in horror.

What speed was that? What terrifying force?

The Eighth Protector tried to ambush Gu Jiao, but without turning her head she drove the spear backhanded and impaled the Eighth Protector squarely through the shoulder.

Then, using the momentum, Gu Jiao planted the toe of her boot under the Fifth Protector’s jaw and violently kicked him off the cliff.

The First Protector roared, “All of you, rush her together!”

The others, including the wounded Second Protector, charged at Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao stood before Gu Changqing and said, each word measured and calm, “You, step aside.”

Gu Changqing’s arm trembled as he tightened his grip on his longsword. “JiaoJiao…”

She seized the injured Gu Changqing, planted a foot on the stone wall, and tossed him toward Duke An behind the rock.

The battle raged fiercely; wind and sand swirled into the night while blades flashed and spears slashed, and Gu Jiao moved like a soulless killing machine, felling Sword Lodge’s Protector after Protector beneath her red-tasseled spear.

“Xuanyuan Spear Technique, eighth and ninth forms!”

The First Protector watched Gu Jiao unleash the Xuanyuan Spear Technique and his eyes flinched fiercely. “You are——”

Puchi——

Gu Jiao’s spear drove through his viscera!

The First Protector fell with his eyes open, never to close, and even in death he didn’t manage to finish uttering that name.

Of the eight Protectors, only the gravely wounded Second Protector remained alive.

Because of his heavy injuries he had not been able to lead the front charge, and strangely, that was why he survived until the end.

He had no strength left to fight; looking at his dead brothers, his heart was shaken and racked with grief, and for a moment he did not know whom he should tend to.

“Third Protector… Third Protector…”

“Eighth Protector… wake up…”

“Old Four…”

“Old Five…”

“First Protector… First Protector… First Protector!”

His voice choked with terror and sobs.

Gu Jiao dragged her blood-splattered red-tasseled spear to stand before him; her whole body was soaked in Sword Lodge’s blood, not a single patch was dry, and the thick, metallic blood only stoked the violent, murderous aura swelling within her.

Gu Changqing pressed a hand to his chest and called out to her, “JiaoJiao… Don’t kill——”

But Gu Jiao could not hear him.

She raised the red-tasseled spear in a killing gesture.

In that instant, a white-robed elder descended from the sky with a deadly aura and slapped his palm down toward Gu Jiao.

Gu Changqing leapt forward and threw himself between them, taking that palm strike for Gu Jiao.

He fell heavily to the ground and vomited blood.

This man’s power was vastly greater, far above An Hun’s!

The Second Protector, as if seeing one last life-saving straw before drowning, cried hoarsely, “White Tiger Elder!”

The four esteemed Elders of Sword Lodge: Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise.

Gu Jiao spun around with a cold glare directed at the newcomer.

Gu Changqing looked at Gu Jiao. She could not keep fighting… She had exhausted herself too thoroughly… If she continued... both she and the child in her womb would be lost…

White Tiger Elder stood beside the Second Protector, cast him a disdainful glance, and snorted, “You couldn’t handle even a girl, what use are you?”

The Second Protector bowed his head.

The White Tiger Elder said indifferently, “Girl, I do not wish to kill you; if you obediently come with me, I will spare them.”

Gu Jiao’s gaze was icy as she said, “Prepare to die.”

White Tiger Elder gave a disdainful snort. “So you refuse a toast only to drink a forfeit!”

He had witnessed Gu Jiao’s strength with his own eyes and admitted she was formidable, yet after such a battle her strength was already waning, and the more she lost control, the more her energy drained.

She had little left in her.

There was no need for him to even draw his sword; if he forced her into two more exchanges, she would collapse on her own.

Such was the advantage of numbers!

White Tiger Elder used his mastery of qinggong to exhaust the last dregs of Gu Jiao’s strength, but just at that moment, a thunderous bang echoed from the sky.

The terrifying shot grazed his shoulder, and a burning pain spread across his entire arm.

He landed by a large tree nearby and glanced at his wound. It was no mere cut, but an open, mangled gash, the flesh raw and bloody, ghastly to behold.

“Tsk, just a graze, what a pity.”

A lazy, mocking sigh accompanied the voice, as Shangguan Qing swaggered forward carrying a firelance.

He came alone, yet the force he projected was like a thousand troops marching.

That, no doubt, was his father’s bloodline at work.

“Can you make way?”

Behind him, Xiao Heng, completely blocked, spoke calmly.

“Oh.” Shangguan Qing immediately stepped aside to give his stinky younger brother a path.

Xiao Heng’s eyes swept the scene before striding quickly toward Gu Jiao.

Seeing Gu Jiao so lost in bloodlust she could no longer tell friend from foe, Shangguan Qing shouted loudly to his brother, “Hey! She’s dangerous!”

Xiao Heng rushed to Gu Jiao’s side without hesitation and grasped the trembling hand clutching the red-tasseled spear. “JiaoJiao!”

Her hand shook violently.

White Tiger Elder’s eyes narrowed dangerously at the pair.

Shangguan Qing raised his firelance at him. “Don’t you move, or I’ll blow your head off!”

Xiao Heng reached out to touch Gu Jiao’s face. “JiaoJiao… it’s me… Ah Heng…”

Shangguan Qing gritted his teeth. “Get back here first! She doesn’t recognize anyone right now. She’ll hurt you!”

Xiao Heng gazed deeply at Gu Jiao, then pulled her completely into his arms despite her losing control.

Shangguan Qing’s face changed drastically. “You’re insane!”

Gu Jiao lifted the spear, its tip gleaming coldly under the moonlight, reflecting in her bloodthirsty eyes.

“Brother!” Shangguan Qing cried out in horror.

The spear fell, piercing not Xiao Heng, but the Second Protector who had tried to ambush him from behind.

That strike drained Gu Jiao’s last ounce of strength. Darkness consumed her vision, her body went limp, and the red-tasseled spear crashed heavily to the ground.

Xiao Heng caught her around the waist. “JiaoJiao! JiaoJiao!”

Shangguan Qing glanced at the unconscious Gu Jiao, the gravely wounded Gu Changqing, and the drugged Duke An, and his heart sank. Just the two of them, carrying three others? The odds were dire.

As if things couldn’t get worse, the other three Elders arrived at the side gate, drawn by the sound of the firelance.

All four were masters of qinggong, and cloaked in the night, a single firelance would never be enough to kill them.

Clutching his weapon, Shangguan Qing felt his heart turn to ashes. “It’s over. This time we’re finished. We’ll all die here…”

“I’ll handle that firelance.” White Tiger Elder said.

Black Tortoise Elder, who was the youngest yet already ranked among the Elders added, “That girl is mine.”

Both struck at once.

White Tiger Elder used the terrain and his agility to neutralize Shangguan Qing’s firelance. Black Tortoise Elder leapt into the air, his talon-like hand seizing Xiao Heng’s shoulder, intending to rip him and Gu Jiao apart and hurl them down the cliff.

At that critical instant, a chilling sword qi cleaved through the night with unstoppable force, filling the entire peak with killing intent. Black Tortoise Elder’s brow twitched, too late to react, as the sword qi shredded his sleeve.

Almost at the same moment, a tall, broad-shouldered figure descended from the sky and drove a kick into his chest, forcing him several steps back.

The figure stood before Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao, cold and untamed, wielding a longsword glittering with the cold light of a peacock’s plume.

All the Elders turned their eyes upon him.

Black Tortoise Elder wiped the blood from the corner of his lips, frowned, and asked, “You are——”

The man’s thin lips parted, his voice frigid. “Long Yi.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
