The great weight in Duke An’s heart finally lifted, and his eyes reddened with emotion at Gu Jiao’s narrow escape.

But suddenly, his gaze fell on Gu Changqing’s hands, and his heart gave a sharp jolt. “Changqing!”

“I’m fine. Don’t worry.” Gu Changqing quickly pulled his hands back, then rose to his feet with Gu Jiao still on his back.

She was sleeping soundly against him.

That fact gave him comfort.

It meant that, in her heart, she trusted him completely and without reservation.

He thought of what she had said to him at the bottom of the cliff, and his eyes trembled faintly.

He had not known she was already with child.

And yet, even while carrying a child, she had still risked her life without hesitation to protect those around her.

He tilted his head slightly and whispered to her as she slept, “Your big brother will take you down the mountain.”

Then he turned to Duke An. “Lord Duke, please move behind the rocks first.”

“Alright.” Duke An nodded, and with Gu Changqing’s help, he sat down behind a large rock.

Gu Changqing then gently set Gu Jiao down as well, letting her rest against Duke An’s shoulder.

This matter had begun because of the Second Protector. Now he stepped forward, facing Gu Changqing, and said, “Boy, you won’t be leaving. Put her down, and I can at least spare you some suffering!”

Gu Changqing stepped out from behind the rocks, drew the longsword from his waist, and looked at them coldly. “No one will take my sister away!”

“Enough talking! Take this!” The Second Protector swung his sword at Gu Changqing.

The Sword Lodge was famed for its swordsmanship, and this boy actually dared to wield a sword before him? Truly making a fool of himself!

The clash of weapons rang out, every strike carrying killing intent. Neither side left the other a single opening or a path of retreat.

Gu Changqing was a junior, and moreover from a lower state, so the Protectors of Sword Lodge had not taken him seriously at all. The fact that the Second Protector had stepped in to deal with him was already considered giving him undue recognition, and naturally the others did not interfere.

Yet as they watched from the sidelines, their expressions gradually shifted.

The Third Protector muttered, “It’s been twenty moves, why hasn’t the Second Protector taken this brat down yet?”

The Fourth Protector added, “This kid can fight far too well!”

The Fifth Protector frowned. “His moves aren’t anything extraordinary, but…”

But there was a ferocity to them.

He was a fighter who unleashed his potential through sheer force of will.

The Eighth Protector said, “This one is actually very suitable to join our Sword Lodge. If he were guided by us, given time, he might very well become another genius expert of our sect.”

The Third Protector narrowed his eyes. “Eighth Protector, are you saying we shouldn’t kill him? That we should recruit him instead?”

Just then, Gu Changqing deliberately exposed an opening, luring the Second Protector into an attack. Seizing the chance, he locked down the man’s sword, then thrust his own blade into the Second Protector’s abdomen.

The Second Protector struck a palm at Gu Changqing’s shoulder, using the force to wrench free of the lock, even as his body tore itself off the longsword impaled in him.

He staggered back several steps, the tip of his sword stabbing into the ground to support his nearly collapsing frame.

“Second Protector!”

All the others turned ashen with shock.

None of them had expected that a lofty Protector of Sword Lodge would lose to a mere young man.

“I’ll deal with you!” The Eighth Protector leapt forward.

The First Protector barked, “Old Sixth, Old Fifth, join in as well! This is no time to speak of martial honor. Kill him quickly, our real task comes first!”

The three rushed towards Gu Changqing in unison.

Each of them possessed strength not beneath that of An Hun. With three striking together, Gu Changqing was swiftly forced into disadvantage.

His hands were already torn and bloodied from the cliff, his body exhausted after climbing while carrying Gu Jiao, his internal force depleted. Against three experts on par with An Hun, he stood almost no chance.

His back was slashed open by the Fifth Protector, his brocade robes split apart, fresh blood spraying into the air.

In her sleep, Gu Jiao’s brows knitted faintly.

Gu Changqing told himself he could not fall, not yet. He still had to bring his sister home.

“Still not surrendering? You’ve got a hard spine, boy!”

“Old Fifth, stop wasting words, just kill him! Old Eighth, cut off his retreat!”

Gu Changqing was besieged from all sides. The Sixth Protector seized the moment, leaping high into the air, his sword driving mercilessly toward Gu Changqing’s back.

Puchi——

The blade pierced flesh, but not as intended. From behind, the tip of a crimson-tasseled spear burst through the Sixth Protector’s chest!

The Sixth Protector looked down in disbelief at the spearhead protruding from within his chest cavity, blood gushing from his mouth.

“Sixth Brother!”

“Sixth Protector!”

The Fifth and Eighth Protectors shouted in unison.

Under the moonlight, Gu Jiao, who had awakened at some unknown moment, stood cold-eyed behind the Sixth Protector, her hands gripping the red-tasseled spear.

The scene had unfolded too suddenly. Even the First Protector and the others were caught off guard.

They had all believed that the Sixth Protector’s sword was sure to pierce Gu Changqing.

Who could have imagined that it would be the Sixth Protector himself who was skewered through the back?

Gu Jiao yanked the spear free with a sharp motion, blood splattering across her pale, icy face.

From the depths of the cliff, the gale roared upward, whipping at her red battle robes.

Her attire blazed like fire, as though soaked in the blood of her enemies.

On the wind-swept ground, a still-warm protective amulet lay abandoned.

Gu Jiao stepped onto it, her eyes cold and murderous, sweeping across every single person present.

Everyone was shaken by her murderous aura. Unlike the presence she carried when she first arrived, though it was also one of killing, at this moment she bore a domineering might that seemed capable of destroying the heavens and shattering the earth, as if she were an Asura who had returned from the depths of purgatory, determined to slaughter the entire Hidden Sword Manor until not a single piece of armor remained intact and not a single blade of grass survived.

Taking the chance, Gu Changqing swung his sword and forced the stunned Fifth and Eighth Protectors back. He dropped to one knee, his longsword bracing his exhausted body, and turned to look at Gu Jiao with her icy gaze. His eyes flicked past the protective amulet under her foot, then settled on her armored belly, his fist clenched tighter and tighter.

The Third Protector frowned. “What’s wrong with her? Why does she feel… so strange?”

The First Protector wore a grave expression. “Do any of you feel that her state… resembles the way An Hun and the others behaved when they lost control?”

The Third Protector’s face shifted. “Could she have been poisoned by purple herb as well?”

The First Protector’s voice went cold. “Seize her!”

Old Fifth rushed forward first, those afflicted by purple herb poison are not easy to kill, so there was no need for mercy; just beat her down however they could, and if she ended up maimed, that would be her own fault.

But what happened next shocked everyone.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
