The bridal escort procession left Shengdu in grand fashion.
Xuanyuan Qi disliked sitting in a carriage, so he rode a horse.
Liao Chen also rode alongside him.
The father and son, after their long-awaited reunion, were enjoying a rare and leisurely moment together.
Meanwhile, the Gu Family’s grandfather and grandsons, along with Tang Yueshan, who had originally wanted to ride as well, were now forced to sit together in a single carriage.
Tang Yueshan’s face was bruised and swollen, a large lump on his head, his left arm in a sling bound around his neck, a pink bandage stuck across his face, and a wad of cotton stuffed into his left nostril.
He was, to put it plainly, utterly miserable.
He said in aggrieved tones, “I only told one inconvenient truth, and look how badly you all beat me… so many of you ganged up to bully one man… no honor in martial ethics at all…”
Gu Chengfeng gave a cold snort. “Serves you right! Hiss——”
No sooner had he spoken than he inhaled sharply in pain.
His condition was hardly better than Tang Yueshan’s.
After their grandfather discovered that he was the infamous thief Fei Shuang, he had been beaten severely. His whole body was covered in injuries, and he was wrapped in bandages.
Gu Changqing, on the other hand, was different. He had neither been beaten nor punished, yet his entire faith in life had crumbled. He sat blankly in the carriage, like a puppet that had lost its soul.
Old Marquis gave the three of them a glare full of disappointment and silently pressed a hand over the bandage on his own forehead.
He had been injured as well, and it was far too embarrassing. He had slipped and fallen in his haste to leave the scene, hit his forehead on the threshold, and nearly split his head open on the spot.
Out of everyone involved in this whole debacle, the only person entirely unscathed was probably Gu Jiao.
She remained utterly unaffected by everyone’s fall from grace, sitting leisurely in the carriage, counting the gold Duke An had given her.
“All of these are mine?” She hugged a small chest in her arms, then looked at the nine little chests on the floor.
Duke An smiled indulgently. “Mm, all of them are yours.”
Gu Jiao was overjoyed!
She focused intently on counting the gold, while Duke An watched her with gentle eyes. The afternoon sunlight streamed in through the open window, filling the carriage with a serene and tranquil beauty.
……
The roads after the start of spring were far easier to travel than those in the bitter winter.
After a month of long and arduous travel, the entourage finally arrived at the capital of the State of Zhao.
This was not merely an ordinary wedding, but also the very first marriage alliance between the two nations. Xuanyuan Qi, Duke An, and Liao Chen all served as envoys representing the State of Yan to the State of Zhao.
Their movements along the way were relayed swiftly by courier horses from the post stations to the imperial palace. The Emperor of the State of Zhao was filled with excitement; this was the first official visit from the State of Yan, and he regarded it with utmost importance, ordering people to go out of the city to welcome them long in advance and preparing a grand banquet at the palace to honor their arrival.
When the news reached Zhuque Street, Princess Xinyang was in the courtyard accompanying Shangguan Qing in practicing calligraphy.
Shangguan Qing was finally experiencing the strictness of her biological mother.
Ten practice sheets of calligraphy a day, and she was forbidden to eat until she finished them.
Meanwhile, Marquis Xuanping was in the courtyard playing with his daughter.
Little Yiyi was five months old. She had just learned to roll over a few days ago, and now she was lying on the large bamboo bed, laughing gleefully as her father teased her.
“What did you say? The envoys from the State of Yan have arrived? Then… the people from Duke An Estate have also arrived?” Princess Xinyang looked toward the guard reporting at the doorway, fully aware that Gu Jiao resided in Duke An Estate.
The guard cupped his fists and said, “Answering the Princess, Duke An and the young master of Duke Estate have arrived, and the ten-mile bridal procession has also arrived.”
Princess Xinyang was stunned. “What young master… ten-mile bridal procession?”
The guard had only just gathered this information from the post station. He stole a glance at the seemingly unconcerned Marquis Xuanping beside him, then braced himself and said, “It is said… that Lord Marquis sent someone to propose marriage to the young master of Duke An Estate, and Lord Duke agreed to this match. He brought his son here to marry the Little Marquis. N-now… the entire capital is spreading the news, saying that the Little Marquis is taking a man as his wife…”
Princess Xinyang turned toward Marquis Xuanping, and the brush in her hand snapped with a crisp crack. “Xiao Ji!!!”
She had been wondering these past few days why he had suddenly stopped making her angry.
She actually thought that ever since they had a daughter, he had truly turned into a proper and respectable doting father!
But just look at the kind of trouble he had stirred up now!
——Xiao Ji must have been keeping quiet all this time because he was secretly up to no good!
Shangguan Qing stared wide-eyed at the snapped writing brush, What on earth? Could Princess Mother really be this fierce?
Marquis Xuanping coughed lightly and said with an indifferent face, “Why are you calling me over?”
Princess Xinyang trembled all over with anger. “This is all your doing! When did you secretly go to propose marriage to the young master of Duke An Estate? Young master? What do you take Ah Heng for?!”
Marquis Xuanping felt a toothache coming on.
The young master of Duke An Estate was Gu Jiao, and yes, he had gone to propose a marriage for his own son with Gu Jiao. He was just playing around a little; normally, no one would take his joke seriously, and Gu Jiao would have been married over as a young lady.
Surnamed Jing, did you really have to go this far?
Princess Xinyang’s fury only burned hotter. “And now it’s perfect! The whole world knows that Ah Heng is going to marry a man!”
Her eyes swept over the inkstone on the table.
Shangguan Qing’s eyelids twitched violently. He hurriedly reached out to press down on the inkstone.
Princess Xinyang gritted her teeth and switched to grab the paperweight on the table, and Shangguan Qing swiftly pressed that down as well.
Princess Xinyang went for the whip hanging on the stone stool.
Shangguan Qing lunged forward and pinned down the whip.
Princess Xinyang was so furious that her voice trembled. “Xiao Qing, get out of my way! Do you want to be beaten too?”
Shangguan Qing cast a glance at his own father, hesitated for a moment, and then silently stood up and moved aside.
Marquis Xuanping: “…”
Princess Xinyang snatched up the whip. “Yu Jin, take Yiyi back to the room.”
Yu Jin secretly shook her head and walked toward the father and daughter.
Marquis Xuanping naturally would not sit and wait for death. With a leap, he used his qinggong and slipped away!
Princess Xinyang grew even angrier, clenching her fists so tightly that they cracked.
“Waaah!” Little Yiyi on the bamboo bed rolled over onto her back and stretched her soft, chubby little arms toward Princess Xinyang.
“Princess.” Yu Jin turned back to look at her.
Princess Xinyang let out a helpless sigh, handed the whip to Shangguan Qing, and went over to pick up the little one from the bamboo bed.
Little Yiyi clutched her clothes and buried her tiny head, immediately starting to search for milk.
Princess Xinyang looked down at the little one in her arms, angry and amused at the same time, and more than half her fury dissipated in an instant. “You little clever thing.”
……
The State of Yan envoy delegation left the post station and arrived at the west city gate at the hour of youshi (5-7 am), where outside the gate, the officials of the State of Zhao who had come to welcome them had already been waiting for quite some time.
Leading them was a young man dressed in crimson official robes.
In the State of Zhao, minor officials of the ninth rank wore blue robes, those above the seventh rank wore green, those above the fifth wore red, and only officials of the third rank or higher could wear purple.
This young man, who looked barely twenty, had already attained a fifth-rank position.
He wore a black gauze hat, his skin was as smooth as jade, and his features were delicate and refined.
He carried an innate, noble air as polished as jade itself, and even standing beside high-ranking first-rank officials, he showed no inferiority whatsoever.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
