State of Yan’s imperial palace, inside the imperial study.
The newly enthroned female Emperor was overwhelmed with the state affairs.
Shangguan Yan sat in the chair, staring at the mountain of memorandums piled before her, feeling as if her head was about to split into two.
“Is being a ruler really this exhausting…? I’m suddenly starting to regret this…”
Gritting her teeth, Shangguan Yan picked up a document.
As the saying went, a new Emperor heralded a new court; the former favorite in the imperial study was Zhang Dequan, but now that Zhang Dequan had followed the Retired Emperor to the Taiyi Palace, Shangguan Yan had promoted an attendant named Wu Sixi.
Wu Sixi entered, carrying a bowl of freshly prepared lotus seed porridge. Smiling, he approached Shangguan Yan and said, “Your Majesty, you’ve been reviewing memorandums for an entire hour. Please take a short rest.”
Shangguan Yan set her brush on the brush rest and leaned wearily against the back of her chair. “I’ve been working for an hour, yet I hardly feel I’ve accomplished anything.”
Wu Sixi chuckled. “Your Majesty has already reviewed quite a lot. Besides, you have only just ascended the throne, and all the civil and military officials of the court rely on you. You must take care of the imperial body.”
Shangguan Yan glanced at the lotus seed porridge he offered. Wu Sixi understood, slid the documents away from her, and carefully placed the bowl at her side.
Shangguan Yan scooped up a spoonful and was about to drink when a thought struck her, and she asked, “The bridal escort team has already departed, correct?”
“They have.” Wu Sixi replied. “By now, they should already be beyond Shengdu.”
Shangguan Yan let out a sigh.
Wu Sixi smiled but hesitated to speak.
Sensing his unease, Shangguan Yan asked, “Is there something else?”
“Ah…” Wu Sixi gave an awkward laugh. “The twenty young men that the State of Jin presented as tribute… they are still being kept in the Chuxiu Palace. This servant does not know how Your Majesty intends to settle them.”
“I’ve never settled such a thing before…” Shangguan Yan muttered under her breath. Of all the gifts the State of Jin could have sent, they had to send twenty handsome men. What were they expecting her to do, fill a harem? Her son was already grown!
She straightened and said solemnly, “For all we know, those men could all be spies from Jin. Arrange them as you see fit, just make sure they don’t starve to death.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.” Wu Sixi replied with a smile.
He secretly sighed in pity. Those men truly were extraordinarily handsome, and since the Crown Princess had now become the ruler, expanding the harem would not have been out of the ordinary.
“Your Majesty, Lord Yanshan requests an audience.”
The report of a young eunuch came from outside the door.
Shangguan Yan set down her spoon. “Allowed him in.”
Wu Sixi glanced at the door, cleared his throat, and called out loudly, “Announcing, Lord Yanshan seeks an audience——”
Shangguan Yan gave him a speechless look.
Wu Sixi turned back and gave an embarrassed grin. “Th-this is the first time I’ve done it too.”
Being able to make a formal announcement was a little indulgence he wanted to enjoy.
Lord Yanshan entered the imperial study, cupped his hands, and bowed. “Your Majesty.”
Shangguan Yan asked, “What brings Imperial Uncle here today?”
Lord Yanshan glanced to either side.
“You all may withdraw.” Shangguan Yan instructed.
“Yes!” Wu Sixi and the eunuchs and palace maids in the study withdrew respectfully.
Seeing Lord Yanshan’s eyes fall on her bowl, Shangguan Yan pushed it toward him. “Do you want the lotus seed porridge? I haven’t touched it.”
Lord Yanshan came to the desk, sat down, picked up the porridge, and also took an empty teacup from the side.
He smiled faintly and said, “To be honest, I came today to bid Your Majesty farewell.”
“You’re leaving again?” Shangguan Yan asked.
Lord Yanshan gave a soft smile. “There’s nothing here in Shengdu that requires me anymore. I want to take Little Xue out to see the world for a while.”
Shangguan Yan muttered to herself, “One by one, they all leave…”
Lord Yanshan paused for a moment, then said kindly, “Also, I came to request that Your Majesty strip me of my imperial status.”
Shangguan Yan gave him a puzzled look. “Why would you want that? I already said I would not pursue your private army matter.”
“That is not the reason.” He said, lowering his head with a slightly bitter smile. “I was never truly a member of Great Yan’s imperial family. I am the child my mother bore with the Turkic people.”
“I know.” Shangguan Yan replied.
She stared at him without blinking. After enduring so many brushes with life and death, the innocence and youthfulness in her eyes had long since vanished, replaced by the steadfastness and tenacity of someone who held power.
The only thing that had never changed was that, when facing someone she trusted enough, she never harbored any thoughts of evasion or concealment.
Lord Yanshan shifted his gaze away, looking out the window at the scenery, and let out a helpless sigh. “Moreover, my imperial brother and I are not really even half-brothers, sharing the same mother but different fathers. He was a child my mother took from Imperial Lady Liu. My mother gave birth to a daughter that year, while Imperial Lady Liu bore a son. In order to secure her position as Empress, my mother and Imperial Lady Liu exchanged their children. Imperial Lady Liu had poor fortune and passed away from illness within a few years. You can rest assured, it was not by my mother’s hand; otherwise, my imperial brother would not have been so filial to her all these years.”
Shangguan Yan was shocked. “There was such a thing…? Does he know?”
Lord Yanshan looked back at her. “You mean my imperial brother? He should know. Princess Anle is my mother’s true-born child.”
Shangguan Yan recalled, “No wonder he was always so close to Imperial Aunt Anle, and he even told me that when I grew up, I must treat her with great filial respect as well.”
Lord Yanshan said, “Princess Anle’s fief is in the southern commandery. Apart from your former fief, it is the most prosperous land in the country.”
Shangguan Yan looked at him with puzzlement. “Why are you suddenly telling me all this?”
Lord Yanshan smiled. “If I don’t tell you, how will you ever agree to revoke my imperial status?”
Shangguan Yan said with a trace of grievance, “Do you truly dislike being my imperial uncle that much?”
Lord Yanshan spread his hands and let out a long sigh. “I’ve been bullied by you since we were children; being an imperial uncle like this has no joy at all.”
Shangguan Yan muttered softly, “I didn’t mean to… it’s not my fault you couldn’t take a hit…”
“All right.” Lord Yanshan said.
“What do you mean all right?” Shangguan Yan was taken aback.
Lord Yanshan set the lotus seed porridge back in front of her. “You like the porridge made with lotus seeds, yet you never eat the seeds themselves.”
Shangguan Yan stared blankly at the lotus seeds he had picked out into the empty teacup. “I have such a habit?”
She had always been careless with matters of food and daily life and had never noticed such details. When Wu Sixi asked her what she wanted to eat, she had casually said lotus seed porridge.
But when the porridge was served, she would never actually eat it.
So, she had been secretly disliking the lotus seeds all along?
Lord Yanshan stood up with a smile. “Your Majesty has state affairs to handle, so I shall take my leave.”
Shangguan Yan nodded lightly.
Lord Yanshan turned and walked out of the Imperial Study. He was already past the doorway when his footsteps suddenly paused. “Shangguan Yan, next time we meet, I will no longer be your imperial uncle.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
