The bridal procession was drawing near.
Grand Secretary Yuan lifted his hand, signaling that the young man should be the one to step forward for the greeting.
The young man gave a slight nod, then strode to the front of the State of Yan delegation. First, he cupped his hands and bowed to Xuanyuan Qi, who rode at the very front. “Supreme Commander.”
Then he turned to Xuanyuan Zheng and cupped his hands again. “Xuanyuan shizi.”
Liao Chen, clad in armor and helmet, kept his monk’s bald head hidden; otherwise, this single “shizi” would have scared quite a few people senseless.
Father and son both cast a glance at the young man before them, and a faint trace of admiration flickered in their eyes.
Perhaps it was because he had already reached adulthood and now wore official robes, but he truly seemed much steadier than before.
“You are? And for what purpose?” Xuanyuan Qi asked in a deliberately formal tone.
The young man glanced at the first carriage at the front of the procession, and with eyes deep and unreadable, he said, “Xiao Heng of Marquis Xuanping Estate is here to welcome my fiancee.”
The moment those words fell, the entire atmosphere changed instantly.
The Black Wind Cavalry did not know that Gu Jiao was actually a girl. Each of them muttered in disdain, what fiancee? Our Young Commander is a man!
“Hey, Wen Renchong, don’t you think this Xiao Heng looks a bit familiar? Like we’ve seen him somewhere before?”
Wen Renchong said, “The Eldest Imperial Grandson…”
“What?” Zhao Dengfeng asked.
“He looks like the Eldest Imperial Grandson.” Wen Renchong said, “Except… he doesn’t have that teardrop mole on his face.”
Zhao Dengfeng’s jaw nearly dropped. “No way… our Eldest Imperial Grandson… wait, no… now it’s His Highness the Crown Prince… he came all the way to the State of Zhao to become a Little Marquis? What on earth is going on?”
Wen Renchong replied coolly, “If you ask me, who should I ask?”
They and Li Shen were among the very few who were not shocked that their Young Commander would marry a man, because back in the military camp, they had already witnessed their Young Commander and the Eldest Imperial Grandson exchanging flirtatious looks.
Ah, what a fine little commander. He could have any woman he wanted, yet he just had to like men.
The curtain of the carriage remained tightly closed, and a youthful, clear voice sounded from within. “Who is your fiancee?”
Xiao Heng stared unwaveringly at the curtain of the carriage, as if he could see the girl inside through the fabric. “The one sitting inside the carriage.”
“There is only me inside the carriage. I am a man. Think carefully, do you really want to marry me?”
Xiao Heng said without the slightest hesitation, “Yes! Even if mountains crumble and the earth splits, I will still marry you! Whether you are a man or a woman, you are my wife, Xiao Heng’s wife!”
Beneath the carriage canopy, the hollowed wind chimes swayed softly in the breeze, their tinkling sounds melodious like a maiden’s heavenly voice.
Grand Secretary Yuan closed his eyes, his hands tucked into the wide sleeves of his robe.
It was over. Completely over.
His newly promoted pillar of the cabinet had now been caught up in this business of marrying a male spouse, and with so many officials and commoners present to hear it, this matter could never be washed clean.
Ah, Xiao Heng, Xiao Heng… for the sake of marrying your bride, you would even disregard your own official reputation?
“Alas.” Grand Secretary Yuan could hardly bear to watch.
Whoosh——
The curtain of the carriage was lifted.
A slender figure bent down and stepped out.
She wore a long, belted skirt of plain blue, her waist so slim it could be encircled with a hand. Her long hair cascaded to her waist, black and lustrous as satin, and a single lock was twisted into a small topknot tied with a blue ribbon that danced in the wind.
Her brows and eyes were exquisitely beautiful, and on her left cheek rested a vermilion birthmark.
Everyone was dumbstruck.
The eyes of the Black Wind Cavalry and the Shadow Division nearly bulged out in unison.
No way.
Their eyes must be playing tricks on them.
Why did the girl before them have the exact same face as their Young Commander?
This couldn’t be real!
Even Wen Renchong, usually the calmest, could no longer contain himself. He flipped off his horse, strode to the carriage, and lifted the curtain with one motion!
The carriage was empty!
There was no second person!
So… she was the Young Commander!
She was a girl!
The Young Commander who had fought beside them for so long… was actually a girl?
The young commander was still young in age, and it was already shocking and heart-wrenching enough that she endured all the hardships with them. But who could have imagined that she was also a young lady all along…
“When we crossed the ice lake, she was the first to jump into the water, and I stepped on her shoulders to get across…”
“When we attacked Pucheng, she took a kick for me… that kick landed right on her stomach…”
“I… we even ignored her sometimes…”
“I… I’ve even been harsh to her before… what about you all?”
Everyone clutched at their chests. Damn it! This hurts! It’s heartbreaking!
“I even told her to go into the woods to pee together with me…” a Black Wind Cavalry soldier said weakly.
All his comrades turned their heads toward him in unison.
His body trembled. “I—I didn’t know she was——”
Was what? You’re asking for a beating!
The pitiful young soldier was immediately mobbed and pummeled by the group.
“Ah, this girl.” Liao Chen turned his face aside; he really couldn’t bear to watch any longer.
Spoiling her fiance like this… was she not afraid that once she married, her wifely authority would never hold?
Gu Jiao walked up to Xiao Heng, lifted her gaze slightly, and looked into his deep and steady eyes. “It’s been a while, my fiance.”
Xiao Heng gently brushed the wind-tousled strands of her black hair behind her ear, smiling softly. “Long time no see, my fiancée.”
……
The officials of both sides went through the formal process of greetings, and Old Chief conveyed that His Majesty of the State of Zhao had prepared a welcoming banquet in the imperial palace and invited the envoys to attend.
Duke An and Old Chief departed first.
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng, meanwhile, led Xuanyuan Qi and Liao Chen to Bishui Alley to see Little Jing Kong.
The alley was filled with the warm and bustling air of households settling in for the evening. Aunt Liu was sitting on the threshold feeding her little grandson, and when she turned her head and saw Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao, her eyes lit up. “Liulang! JiaoJiao!”
Xiao Heng greeted politely. “Aunt Liu.”
Gu Jiao curved her lips slightly. “Aunt Liu.”
“Oh my! Cui’er! JiaoJiao is back!” Aunt Liu called into the house and then said to Gu Jiao, “I heard you went to visit relatives. Why did you go for so long? Liulang and the others all came back, and you still weren’t home… Come in and sit for a bit! Eh? And who are they?”
She noticed Liao Chen and Xuanyuan Qi standing in the dim light of dusk, clad in armor.
Xuanyuan Qi spoke politely, “I am JiaoJiao’s maternal granduncle, and this is my son, Zheng’er.”
“Ah…” Aunt Liu stared at the two without blinking. Handsome, yes, but one was too old, and the other was too young.
So she stopped paying attention to them, instead taking her little grandson by the wrist. “Huzi, greet her. It’s big sister JiaoJiao!”
Three-year-old Huzi no longer recognized Gu Jiao and shyly hid behind Aunt Liu.
At that moment, Aunt Liu’s daughter Cui’er came out and also invited them into the house to sit, but Gu Jiao politely declined, saying she would come another day.
Aunt Liu smiled considerately. “That’s true. Your family must be longing for you. You’d better hurry home!”
“Is that JiaoJiao back?”
The gate of Grandpa Zhao’s residence opened, and Grandma Zhao came out.
Gu Jiao greeted her with a smile and asked how her salted duck eggs were turning out and whether the pickled vegetables were finished.
Xuanyuan Qi watched Gu Jiao, a trace of surprise flashing in his eyes.
She had learned to get along with people.
This warmth of everyday life… this was the side his elder brother had always wished to see.
Finally, they arrived at their own door. The newly renovated courtyard gate was left ajar.
At this hour, the men of the household should all have returned from school.
Gu Jiao deliberately made no sound and raised her hand to knock on the door.
From inside the yard came the sound of tiny, childish footsteps.
And then, little Gu Xiaobao, who had only just learned to walk, poked his head out from the crack in the door.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
