Before the rain had washed out the roads, scouts had returned with good news: the Black Wind Cavalry had retaken Quyang. But the joy was short-lived, as they soon received word that the army of the State of Liang was preparing to strike back and launch an assault on the city.

Wang Man let out a cold snort, “The Black Wind Cavalry isn’t cut out for holding cities, and on top of that, they have to keep watch over tens of thousands of rebel troops within the walls. If you ask me, Quyang City is as good as lost! Humph, he’s just a boy, soft-hearted like a woman! When they captured the rebels, they should’ve executed them all to prevent future trouble! What’s the point of reclaiming the city if the Nangong Family just lifts their arm and the rebels inside join forces with the State of Liang from outside? It’s a complete waste of good Black Wind Cavalry soldiers. They’re all going to die because of that brat!”

Ye Qing shot Wang Man a cool, sideward glance. “Did General Wang personally visit Quyang City? Did you fight on the front lines there? You talk like you know everything. If Quyang holds, are you going to drop to your knees and call the Black Wind Cavalry’s commander your big brother?”

Ye Qing was usually known for being warm and courteous, always carrying the demeanor of a refined senior disciple, rarely showing such sharpness or bite in his words.

As Shangguan Qing would put it, "I can save you some face, but you’d better have a shred of self-awareness.”

Wang Man flung his arms open in defiance. “Humph! If he can really hold it, I’ll hand over my position as Grand General of the Western Expedition to him, no problem!”

Under normal circumstances, this was the moment when the Crown Princess would step in to smooth things over, saying, “What nonsense are you saying, General Wang? You’re the most senior veteran among us, unmatched in battlefield experience. No one else could hold the post of Grand General. It’s not something to hand over to a greenhorn.”

But what actually happened was——

The Crown Princess glanced at Wang Man in mild surprise, then said with a sigh of helplessness, “Since the Grand General has said so himself, then I’ll bear witness to it.”

Wang Man: “...!!”

Shangguan Yan turned her gaze to Ye Qing. “Ye Qing, what did you come to see me for?”

Ye Qing clasped his hands and said, “I had originally intended to say that if the road was still impassable by tomorrow, I would take a detour and go on ahead. But now, it seems there’s no need.”

“Mm.” Shangguan Yan nodded, her gaze drifting toward the rain-soaked darkness outside the tent, and she murmured with longing, “I truly wish we could reach Quyang soon.”

……

Quyang City.

Beyond the northern city gate, which had just endured the ravages of a brutal battle, the land was left scarred and devastated. Inside the walls, the defending troops were busily clearing the battlefield’s wreckage, while medical officers worked alongside the soldiers to evacuate the wounded.

At the city gate, a medical officer and a city guard were carrying a blood-covered injured soldier on a stretcher when, all of a sudden, the physician’s foot slipped on a corpse strewn across the ground. He stumbled, causing the stretcher to tilt dangerously.

“Ah——” the physician cried out in alarm.

This was a patient with a severe compound fracture. If he suffered another fall, his life would be in grave danger!

But then, a strong hand reached out and firmly caught the edge of the stretcher, steadying it without the slightest shake.

The guard looked up and immediately saluted with respect. “General Ji!”

Ji Pingchuan, the general guarding the city’s northern gate.

“Th-thank you, General Ji.” the medical officer from Shengdu stammered. Upon hearing the guards address the man as General Ji, he hurriedly followed suit.

General Ji gave a slight nod. “Is everything alright?”

“All fine now,” the medical officer replied as he righted the stretcher, and together with the guard, he continued into the northern gate.

Before long, another group of riders arrived at the scene.

Ji Pingchuan turned around and offered a respectful salute to the man at the head of the party. “Lord Chang.”

Though both men held the title of general, their ranks were not the same.

Chang Wei was the supreme commander of all the border defense forces and held authority over all the garrisoned troops.

Chang Wei dismounted in one fluid motion and cast his eyes over the battlefield, where blood still ran in rivulets. His brows furrowed deeply as he asked, “What exactly happened here? Why did the army of the State of Liang retreat?”

Ji Pingchuan answered, “The imperial court sent four reinforcements.”

“Four?” Chang Wei was astonished. Not because the number was small, but precisely because it was so few, and yet they had managed to force a retreat from an army of eighty thousand soldiers from the State of Liang.

Ji Pingchuan explained, “They assisted Commander Xiao in causing chaos at the rear of the Liang army. They beheaded Chu Feipeng, then boldly sounded the enemy’s retreat horn on their own initiative. At the time, the State of Liang’s forces were thrown into disarray by the death of their commander, morale collapsed, and they truly believed that the order to retreat had come from their own side. So they all withdrew. The Black Wind Cavalry seized the opportunity to give chase and inflicted heavy losses on them during the retreat.”

They could do that?

What kind of rogue tactics were these?

Chang Wei was momentarily at a loss for words.

This truly was the embodiment of the saying “the timid starve, the bold feast.” If anyone could be said to have fought a battle with flair and creativity, it was these people.

The odds of success for such a scheme were less than ten percent. If Chang Wei himself had been in that position, he would never have dared attempt such a move.

First, he couldn’t have slain Chu Feipeng; second… to even think of sounding the retreat horn from behind enemy lines… it was beyond audacious.

“How is Commander Xiao’s condition?” Chang Wei asked.

Ji Pingchuan replied, “He was injured and has returned to camp for medical treatment.”

……

Inside the commander’s tent, Gu Jiao lay unconscious on a cold, hard military cot.

Also present in the tent were Old Marquis and a medical officer.

The medical officer did not recognize Old Marquis and only knew from the soldiers that he was one of the reinforcements sent by the imperial court.

The medical officer stepped forward and began to help remove Gu Jiao’s armor.

Old Marquis frowned and said sharply, “Wait!”

Startled by the sudden, commanding voice, the medical officer froze and drew his hands back in confusion. “Sir… may I ask what’s wrong?”

Old Marquis cast a calm glance at Gu Jiao, who lay unmoving on the bed, and asked in a low voice, “Do you have any female medics?”

The medical officer answered, “Yes, we do.”

Without room for negotiation, Old Marquis said coldly, “Send for a female medic to treat her.”

“Huh?” The medical officer was taken aback. Why insist on having a woman treat a man?

Old Marquis’s expression turned so cold it was frightening. The physician, unaware that this was no imperial court official but assuming he was a trusted confidant of the Crown Princess, dared not offend him, and hurried off to fetch a female medical officer.

The young female medic was equally puzzled as to why she had been summoned to treat the young commander. Her skills were not lacking, but due to her inexperience and gender, she had rarely been given such an important assignment.

When she entered the commander’s tent, Old Marquis stepped out.

The female medic couldn’t help but imagine a terrible possibility, but upon seeing that the young commander was indeed unconscious and utterly incapable of committing any improper act toward a woman, her confusion only deepened.

“So why did they send for me?”

Still full of questions, she began unfastening the young commander’s armor. But when she took a pair of scissors and cut open the blood-soaked front of the uniform, she was completely stunned by what she saw.

……

Gu Jiao slept in such a deep, unrelenting stupor that she remained unconscious until the evening of the third day.

When she opened her eyes, the female medic was in the middle of changing the dressing on the wound on her arm.

A cold flicker of wariness instinctively flashed across Gu Jiao’s gaze, startling the female medic so much that her hand trembled and the jinchuang medicine fell from her grasp.

“I’ve seen you before. You’re one of the accompanying medical staff.” Gu Jiao said as the vigilance faded from her eyes. Sitting up, she asked, “How long was I asleep?”

The female medic picked up the jinchuang medicine, still visibly shaken, and replied, “Three days.”

“That long? What’s the situation on the battlefield now?” Gu Jiao asked.

“The army from the State of Liang has retreated. Their losses were severe, and they likely won’t be launching another attack on the city anytime soon.” the female medic reported. Then she glanced at Gu Jiao’s collar. “Y-young Commander, you…”

Following her gaze downward, Gu Jiao looked at herself and saw that her clothes had come loose; her chest was wrapped tightly in thick bandages, and the wound there had already been treated.

It appeared her true identity as a woman had been discovered.

Perhaps sensing what Gu Jiao was thinking, the female medic hurriedly said, “I-I didn’t tell anyone!”

That stern and intimidating old general had forbidden her from saying a word. He had even threatened to kill her with a blade if she so much as let a single syllable slip.

Thinking of that old man, the female medic’s eyes lit up. “Oh! Young Commander, while you were unconscious, that old general stood guard outside your tent every single day, not allowing anyone to come in and visit. I’ll go tell him you’ve woken up!”

As she spoke, she walked around the folding screen toward the tent entrance and lifted the heavy curtain that the old general had added for insulation. However, she didn’t see any sign of him.

Scratching her head, the female medic muttered, “Strange, he was here all the past few days…”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
