“Huh? Old Gu, you’re heading out?”
Tang Yueshan had just finished patrolling with the Black Wind Cavalry and was returning to camp when he spotted Old Marquis dressed like a traveling merchant, clearly preparing to leave.
“I’m going to Pucheng to gather intelligence.” Old Marquis replied.
Pucheng, a State of Yan territory that had been seized by the State of Jin, was less than a hundred li from Quyang and could be reached in two days with fast horses.
Tang Yueshan raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Oh? So you’re finally stepping in? Weren’t you the one who didn’t want to get involved? You even blamed me and Old Xiao for dragging you into this mess.”
Old Marquis walked a few steps forward, gazing solemnly at the pale moon hanging in the grey sky. In a serious tone, he said, “Let’s get one thing straight. I’m not doing this for the State of Yan, and I’m certainly not doing it for that girl. It’s you two who took matters into your own hands and dragged the State of Zhao into a war between major powers. There’s no longer a path for self-preservation. The States of Jin and Liang are like brothers-in-arms, always speaking with one voice. The State of Jin will never let the State of Zhao go. At this point, the only option left is to fight with our backs to the river.”
He paused, expecting a response from Tang Yueshan, but none came. He turned around to take a look.
Only to see Tang Yueshan already leading his horse ahead, walking off without waiting!
Old Marquis clenched his fists, the joints cracking audibly in frustration.
So was he just monologuing for nothing? Why had everyone become so maddeningly good at getting under his skin lately?!
……
Gu Jiao had been gravely injured, but her recovery was astonishingly swift. After lying in bed for three days, she was already out of serious danger.
Word quickly spread that the young commander had regained consciousness, and everyone was overjoyed, eager to rush over to her tent and visit her, only to be stopped by the medical officers.
Gu Jiao summoned Advisor Hu to inquire about the Black Wind Cavalry’s casualties.
Advisor Hu sighed and said, “We had all prepared ourselves for the worst, for the ultimate sacrifice. But thanks to your father and the others…”
“My…father?” Gu Jiao was caught off guard and stood there dazed for a while before she remembered seeing Marquis Xuanping and the others just before she lost consciousness.
It must be Marquis Xuanping whom Advisor Hu referred to as her father.
This had been a brutal and bloody battle. Sacrifices were inevitable. But compared to a total annihilation, the fact that the majority of the Black Wind Cavalry had been preserved was already a miracle.
Advisor Hu added regretfully, “Cheng Fugui, Li Jin, and Tong Zhong were all seriously wounded. They probably won’t be able to join the upcoming battles.”
“What about Mu Qingchen?” Gu Jiao asked.
At the mention of that name, Advisor Hu’s expression turned more solemn. “Young Master Mu’s performance was… quite a surprise.”
He had grown at an astonishing pace, to the point where no trace remained of the pampered young master who once vomited at the sight of killing; on the battlefield, he was now brave and decisive, slaying countless soldiers of the State of Liang and saving numerous comrades from the Black Wind Cavalry.
Cheng Fugui was among those he had rescued.
He had also sustained a few injuries himself, but none were serious enough to hinder him.
Gu Jiao gave a small nod to herself in silent approval.
Mu Qingchen had become stronger too, and that was a wonderful thing.
In that dream, Mu Qingchen had never encountered the forces of the State of Liang; he had faced the full might of the State of Jin’s army directly, and because he could not bear to take a life, he missed his window to escape and ended up surrounded by Jin troops, eventually being shot and killed by Gongsun Yu.
But the Mu Qingchen of today surely would no longer be so soft-hearted, would he?
If he found himself in such a desperate situation again, he would undoubtedly carve a bloody path to survival, and Gongsun Yu’s arrow would never get the chance to pierce his body.
His fate, too, perhaps would be rewritten, wouldn’t it?
...
After finishing her wash and dressing neatly, Gu Jiao first went to check on the Black Wind King, who had been standing vigil outside her tent for the past few days without ever leaving her side.
The Black Wind King’s injuries had been tended to by the horse trainer, and now its head was wrapped in a white bandage, making it look rather pitiful.
Gu Jiao gently stroked its neck.
The Black Wind King sniffed at Gu Jiao’s scent. Horses were sensitive creatures and could discern the severity of a person’s condition just from their breath.
“I’m fine now.” Gu Jiao said.
The Black Wind King seemed to relax at last, slowly lowering itself to the ground.
It was utterly exhausted.
But while Gu Jiao remained unconscious, it had not dared rest.
Just as, with the battle not yet over, it had not dared grow old.
Gu Jiao stayed by its side, gently stroking its mane, and only when it had fallen asleep did she leave for the tent next door.
Her “father,” Marquis Xuanping, was staying in that tent.
When she lifted the curtain and entered, both Marquis Xuanping and Tang Yueshan were present. Tang Yueshan was meticulously cleaning his beloved Tang Family bow, while Marquis Xuanping was sprawled confidently across a long bench, exuding an aura of sheer... well, not so much banditry as overwhelming dominance.
In front of him, chained to a wooden post with iron links, was a disheveled, wretched-looking man.
The man glared at Marquis Xuanping with a wrathful, almost feral expression, as though he would leap forward and bite him at any moment. “If you’ve got the guts, kill me already!”
Marquis Xuanping smiled carelessly and replied, “Why would I bother killing you? Do I look like some bloodthirsty maniac? I’m a gentle soul, the kind who wouldn’t even step on an ant by the roadside. How could I possibly bear to kill you?”
At that moment, a bug happened to crawl past.
Without so much as lifting an eyelid, Marquis Xuanping casually stomped it to death.
The man: “…”
Marquis Xuanping curved his lips in a smile. “Everyone outside thinks you’re already dead. Your forces were routed and scattered, and the morale of the State of Liang has completely collapsed. There’s no way they’ll recover from this.”
Chu Feipeng clenched his teeth and growled, “What exactly do you want?!”
Marquis Xuanping rubbed his hands together and said with great nonchalance, “Things are a little tight lately, so I was wondering… what kind of ransom might your State of Liang Emperor be willing to offer for your return? If the price’s too low, I can always kill you later.”
Chu Feipeng: “…”
Just then, Marquis Xuanping looked up and spotted Gu Jiao standing at the entrance. He grinned and said, “Ah, my son has come to see me?”
Gu Jiao stepped inside and greeted both Marquis Xuanping and Tang Yueshan.
“You’re awake?” Tang Yueshan carefully set down his treasured bow and walked over to examine her from head to toe. “You’ve recovered pretty fast, just like that brat Chang Jing.”
“Chang Jing was injured too?” Gu Jiao asked in surprise.
She had already lost consciousness by the time Chang Jing engaged Chu Feipeng in combat.
Marquis Xuanping glanced at Chu Feipeng and said indifferently, “His meridians got shattered by this guy, just a minor injury.”
Uh… shattered meridians still count as a minor injury?
What kind of little monster was Chang Jing?
Gu Jiao’s gaze fell on Chu Feipeng. She reached out and took his pulse. So he hadn’t been beheaded after all, but that was of no consequence; his dantian had been destroyed. Even if he made it back alive, he would return as nothing more than a cripple.
Gu Jiao asked, “Aside from him, did you capture anyone else?”
Marquis Xuanping replied unhurriedly, “You mean those swordsmen? They’re dead.”
Since they were dead, so be it. After all, she already knew that Long Yi’s sect was that so-called Sword Lodge. She could simply continue investigating in that direction in the future.
Gu Jiao withdrew her hand and asked Marquis Xuanping, “Are you planning to use him to negotiate terms with the State of Liang?”
Marquis Xuanping said, “Mm.”
Gu Jiao offered a practical piece of advice, “Then you’d better hide him somewhere first.”
Marquis Xuanping asked, “Why?”
Gu Jiao explained, “The imperial army will arrive soon. Chu Feipeng is also a bargaining chip for them to use in negotiations with the State of Liang. Be careful they don’t try to seize him from you.”
“Heh.” Marquis Xuanping let out an arrogant laugh and said, “In this world, there’s no one who can snatch something from my hands!”
Outside the eastern city gate, the imperial army had arrived and was now encamped beneath the walls.
Chang Wei led his generals out of the city to receive them. Kneeling on one knee, the group cupped their hands in salute and cried out, “We respectfully welcome Her Highness the Crown Princess—”
The dusty carriage curtain was lifted.
Shangguan Yan, wearing the Crown Princess’s python-embroidered ceremonial robe, descended from the carriage with a stern and commanding presence.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
