The State of Liang’s army instantly plunged into disarray. Their morale collapsed, and even their retreat became a panicked mess.

Meanwhile, the Black Wind Cavalry, who had been on the verge of collapse, suddenly found renewed strength and spirit.

The imperial reinforcements had finally arrived!

The Great General of the State of Liang was finally dead!

The army of the State of Liang had lost its leader. If not now, when would be the time to kill them?

Cheng Fugui bellowed with all the force his lungs could muster, raising his spear high as he roared, “The State of Liang dogs killed so many of our Black Wind Cavalry, and now they think they can just run? Not so fast! Brothers! Charge! Slaughter them all!”

Since the imperial army had come, the Reserve Battalion no longer needed to remain as backup.

Li Jin turned to his subordinates and ordered, “Go inform General Zhou and General Zhang, the Reserve Battalion is joining the battle too! Kill every last State of Liang scum!”

“Yes, sir!”

What followed was a full-scale Black Wind Cavalry vengeance campaign.

Of the eighty thousand strong State of Liang army that had laid siege to the city, fewer than thirty thousand managed to escape intact.

However, when the Black Wind Cavalry finally pushed through to the rear lines, they found no trace of any imperial reinforcements.

There was only a single war chariot, wrecked and shattered by the panicked retreat of the State of Liang soldiers, and three men——an old man, a middle-aged man, and a youth,

sitting cross-legged in the dirt by the roadside, covered in ash and grime.

Lying beside the old man was their Young Commander. Beside the youth lay an unidentified officer of the State of Liang.

The Black Wind King remained faithfully at the Young Commander’s side, occasionally sniffing at her with his nose. The Young Commander was still alive, just unconscious.

All this way, Gu Jiao had remained vigilant and guarded, never letting down her defenses, not even while she slept.

However, whether it was merely their imagination or something real, at that very moment, as they stood near the Young Commander, she appeared to be sleeping more peacefully than ever before, her breathing steady, her expression calm, as if all the noise and chaos of the battlefield had completely faded away around her.

For a moment, none of them had the heart to step forward and disturb that rare, undisturbed rest.

After a while, one cavalryman spoke up timidly, his voice uncertain and hesitant, “So… what exactly is going on here? Weren’t we told reinforcements from Great Yan were coming? Don’t tell me those so-called reinforcements that lunatic was yelling about just now… are actually these few people in front of us?”

“Hahahaha! That was absolutely thrilling! You bastards from the State of Liang! Don’t run! Come back and fight this Grandpa some more!”

Everyone was struck speechless, black lines forming across their faces. Uh, that lunatic was coming!

Tang Yueshan dismounted with a fluid movement, still riding one of the Black Wind Cavalry’s warhorses, and honestly, the feeling was beyond amazing!

He glanced at the three sitting figures, namely Marquis Xuanping and his two companions, with confusion and disbelief, “Huh? Old Xiao! Old Gu! Chang Jing! What happened to you guys? Why do you all look like this?”

The three of them remained expressionless, faces blank, as they simultaneously spat out a mouthful of dust.

There had been so many of the State of Liang’s soldiers retreating in disarray just now, of course the roadside was filled with clouds of dust!

The soldier from the State of Liang lying on the ground at their feet was in fact Chu Feipeng himself.

As for the head Tang Yueshan had been brandishing earlier, that wasn’t actually Chu Feipeng’s. It belonged to some random soldier from the State of Liang, and honestly, it was so covered in blood that no one could recognize it anyway.

Oh, and that retreat horn everyone heard earlier? That had been blown by him too.

Just moments ago, Chu Feipeng had feigned death before making a desperate last-ditch attempt to ambush Marquis Xuanping. To be frank, even Tang Yueshan had believed at the time that Marquis Xuanping was a goner for sure.

No one had expected that Marquis Xuanping would suddenly retaliate with a savage, thunderous slash, shattering Chu Feipeng’s longsword in one decisive strike!

With killing intent surging like a storm, Marquis Xuanping had stomped one boot firmly onto Chu Feipeng’s blood-soaked chest!

He stared down at Chu Feipeng with a cold, chilling gaze, his eyes as dark and unfathomable as a bottomless abyss, “You dare to ambush this Marquis, Chu Feipeng? Just with your skill? You’re not even close.”

Tang Yueshan was certain that Marquis Xuanping’s lower back injury had genuinely flared up; it wasn’t an act. And he was also sure that the man had truly let his guard down in that moment. The only explanation for what happened next was that Marquis Xuanping’s reaction speed had reached an entirely inhuman level, surpassing even the limits of the most elite martial experts.

To rise from an underground martial arena in the State of Zhao all the way to the courts of the State of Yan, to defeat the top-ranked champions of major nations despite coming from a so-called “inferior country,” it had to be said, what he relied on wasn’t luck, but rock-solid, unbeatable skill.

Back then, he had concealed both his true identity and his face during the underground tournaments. Only once, by pure accident, had his mask fallen off in the street, spotted by a painter on an upper floor.

From that moment on, the Beauty List of the Six States made history by allowing a man to enter the list for the first time.

Now that he thought about it, whose fault was it that Old Xiao’s mask got knocked off?

If he remembered correctly, it had been a woman… someone with the surname Yan… what was her name again?

……

Mount Mang.

This was where the imperial army had stationed itself for the time being.

It had been raining for three days and three nights without pause, and the torrential downpour had completely destroyed the road ahead. The soldiers braved the storm and worked tirelessly for two full days to repair it, but even so, they still hadn’t managed to fully clear the path.

Inside a tent softly lit by candlelight, a young palace maid named Huan’er, dressed as a servant boy, walked in carrying a small tray of freshly picked wild fruits. “Your Highness, these are fruits I just picked. Please try some.”

Shangguan Yan responded indifferently, “I have no appetite. You eat them.”

“But these were picked especially for Your Highness,” Huan’er replied, lifting her hand to show the cut across her skin. “My hand even got scratched.”

After spending this time together, Huan’er had long since figured out the Crown Princess’s temperament. Shangguan Yan wasn’t someone who gave in to softness, but if one played the pitiful card just right, it usually worked well enough.

Shangguan Yan glanced at the swollen red scrape on her hand and sighed softly. “Just leave them on the table.”

Delighted, Huan’er placed the fruit gently on the small side table.

Shangguan Yan picked up one bright red fruit, and for a brief moment, her mind drifted to the three children scattered to distant corners of the world. She wondered how each of them was doing now.

“Your Highness, General Wang seeks an audience.” came the voice of a guard from outside the tent.

“Let him in.” Shangguan Yan said.

Huan’er, knowing when to be discreet, immediately moved behind the screen and began tidying Shangguan Yan’s robe.

“Your Highness, Ye Qing is also here to see you.”

Another voice, this time belonging to Ye Qing himself, came from beyond the tent.

“Let them both come in.” said Shangguan Yan.

Wang Man and Ye Qing entered the tent together.

Ye Qing had not departed with the main army; he had been sent under the orders of the Imperial Advisor to deliver medicinal supplies to the front line. Though he had set out a few days later, the army’s delay due to the rain in Mount Mang had allowed him to catch up.

Wang Man had always looked down on these spiritual charlatans of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall and didn’t bother to spare Ye Qing even a glance.

Ye Qing, however, paid him no mind. With calm respect, he bowed to Shangguan Yan. “Your Highness the Crown Princess.”

Shangguan Yan looked at the two of them. “What business do you have with me?”

Although Wang Man clearly held no regard for him, Ye Qing remained composed and dutiful, observing the proper decorum of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall as he gestured for Wang Man to speak first.

Wang Man did not stand on ceremony. He straightened his broad, imposing frame and declared, “I’ve come to report to Your Highness. The road has been cleared. We can set out at dawn tomorrow.”

Shangguan Yan let out a quiet breath of relief. “We can finally move out. The soldiers have worked hard. Our extended delay here has disrupted our plans to reach Quyang… I wonder how the Black Wind Cavalry is faring in their defense of the city.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
