Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Chu Feipeng lowered his head in disbelief, staring at the long blade that had pierced through his chest.
He had never expected Marquis Xuanping to be so fast, nor had he anticipated that he would be wielding a pair of twin blades.
Tang Yueshan’s heart pounded wildly, and he couldn’t help but curse inwardly. Was that really just one move?
Strictly speaking, calling it a single move wasn’t quite accurate; Marquis Xuanping had indeed allowed Chu Feipeng three strikes, but even in his apparent passivity, he had been watching keenly, thoroughly, meticulously.
There had never been such a thing as reward without effort in this world, nor effortless victories; all triumphs were born of relentless training and readiness sharpened like blades before war.
From the moment Chang Jing clashed with Chu Feipeng, Marquis Xuanping had already begun analyzing and breaking down his opponent’s techniques.
But that was done from a distance, and it was inevitable that some fine details might escape notice. Hence, he had allowed three more close-up strikes, closely studying the intricacies of each of Chu Feipeng’s movements.
Though it seemed he had only launched a single active strike, in truth, long before this battle, atop the war chariot, he had already fought Chu Feipeng hundreds of times over in his mind.
Tang Yueshan looked at him with admiration and said, “Old Xiao, you’re amazing!”
Marquis Xuanping replied with measured honesty, “Chu Feipeng is not weak. The reason he lost so quickly is entirely because he underestimated me.”
Tang Yueshan felt that what Marquis Xuanping said made a lot of sense. Yet somehow, hearing such modest words from this marquis’s mouth just didn’t seem believable.
With complete seriousness, Marquis Xuanping sighed and said, “If he hadn’t been so careless, he might’ve lasted... one more move against me.”
Tang Yueshan: “…”
Between saving face and saving your life, you really can only pick one, huh?
“Hiss——”
Marquis Xuanping suddenly drew a sharp breath through his teeth, bending down as he gripped the ground with one hand, using his blade for support, and pressed the other hand to his lower back. “Ow... my back...”
Tang Yueshan’s mouth twitched. Could he not look cool for more than three seconds?
With a tone full of grievance, Marquis Xuanping muttered, “Why are you just standing there? Get down and help me back up!”
Tang Yueshan curled his lips and was just about to jump down from the chariot when suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Chu Feipeng, lying in a pool of blood, suddenly grabbing a longsword from the ground and stabbing it straight at Marquis Xuanping’s back!
At that moment, Marquis Xuanping was completely unguarded, still suffering from the sudden flare-up of his back injury——
Tang Yueshan wanted to react, but it was already too late. The sword had already been thrust!
His face turned pale with horror, and he shouted in alarm, “Old Xiao——!”
……
Below the city tower, the army of the State of Liang and the Black Wind Cavalry were still locked in fierce combat. The left wing of the Black Wind Cavalry had taken the heaviest casualties; soldiers and warhorses fell one after another, and yet more fresh troops and mounts surged forward to fill the ranks.
After escorting Gu Jiao to the rear of the Liang army, Tong Zhong immediately turned back to rejoin the battle, but even so, he was unable to turn the tide.
He had taken three wounds; two on his left leg, one in the abdomen. And even his armor had been pierced through.
Judging from the battle situation, the State of Liang’s army had suffered heavier losses overall; however, their sheer numbers meant that even with a three-to-one casualty ratio, they would still outlast the forces of the State of Yan in the end.
Tong Zhong swung his sword once more, striking down at a Liang soldier.
But his strength was nearly spent, and the strike barely managed to injure the enemy at all.
The opposing soldier only staggered slightly before immediately charging back at Tong Zhong.
Tong Zhong had no strength left to dodge. He was keenly aware that he couldn’t even lift his sword anymore.
He was going to die.
Young Commander.
It seems I may have to go on ahead.
For all the misunderstandings I held against you in the past, please don’t hold them against me.
You must survive, and lead the Black Wind Cavalry to victory in this war.
In the next life… let us fight side by side once more.
Tong Zhong collapsed to the ground.
Yet, that fatal blow from the Liang soldier never landed. Mu Qingchen cut the enemy down with a single strike!
Mu Qingchen caught Tong Zhong in time, shielding him while cutting down enemy after enemy to carve out a path soaked in blood!
Once the most refined and untouchable First Young Master of Shengdu, he was now drenched in his enemies’ blood from head to toe. Every swing of his sword was a killing strike, leaving not the faintest chance of survival to his foes.
In just a few short days, the brutal battlefield had already taught him a profound and merciless truth. Showing mercy to the enemy was the same as being cruel to one’s comrades.
The situation on Cheng Fugui and Li Jin’s end wasn’t looking good either. Cheng Fugui had previously sustained injuries; although he had fully recovered, as the saying goes, “a hundred days for bone and tendon to heal,” his left arm still hadn’t regained its former strength and remained noticeably weaker.
The central army had long since merged into a chaotic melee with the right flank.
Cheng Fugui and Li Jin fought side by side, watching each other’s backs in the midst of the slaughter.
Breathing heavily, Cheng Fugui gasped, “The Vanguard Battalion can’t hold out much longer…”
Li Jin swallowed hard and replied hoarsely, “The Assault Battalion is just about done too…”
If the State of Liang’s forces didn’t retreat soon, the Black Wind Cavalry would truly be finished!
Li Jin added, “The Young Commander went to assassinate the State of Liang’s Great General… let’s hope… he succeeds…”
Cheng Fugui responded, “But it’s already been so long…”
He didn’t finish his sentence, but both of them understood what he meant.
They had seen with their own eyes how Tong Zhong escorted Gu Jiao to the rear of the State of Liang’s army, and by now, the time it took for an incense stick to burn had already passed. An assassination shouldn’t have taken this long.
Unless——
The Young Commander had run into trouble.
Or worse still, the Young Commander… had been killed in turn.
The two men gripped their spears tightly at the same time. The thought that their fierce and adorable Young Commander might have been slain by those State of Liang bastards ignited a burning fury in their chests!
Kill!
Kill every last one of those Liang dogs!
Amid the blood-drenched combat, a low, somber horn suddenly sounded from the rear of the State of Liang’s army.
Was this——
A horn signaling a full-scale assault?
Was the State of Liang launching an all-out attack? Had something happened to the Young Commander?
Hoooo——
Another horn blast echoed.
Wait a minute. Something’s wrong. That wasn’t a signal to attack. It was… a retreat call!
The State of Liang’s army was retreating!
“Wahaha!” Alongside an utterly unrestrained and wild laugh, a man clad in Great Yan armor burst out from the ranks of the State of Liang forces, holding aloft a freshly severed, blood-dripping human head. “Chu Feipeng’s head is here! Your Great General of the State of Liang is dead! Great Yan reinforcements have arrived! State of Liang bastards, come meet your deaths!”
It was Tang Yueshan.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
