Yu Jin heard the commotion coming from the military camp and hurried over in a fluster, and when she saw the Marquis standing at the entrance of the tent but did not see her own princess, she could not help but ask with worry, “Lord Marquis, where is the princess?”
Xiao Ji glanced at the tent flap that was still swaying and crackling after being thrown aside, and he pretended to sigh before saying, “I was so focused on forcibly escorting the Holy Maiden back after marrying the Holy Maiden that I ended up forgetting your princess in the Holy Maiden Hall.”
“W-what?”
Yu Jin felt as though thunder had struck her head, and she stood there in a daze while staring blankly at Xiao Ji; the sky was too dark, and earlier she had been too flustered to notice that Xiao Ji was wearing red ceremonial clothing. Although it was slightly different from the wedding attire of a groom from the State of Zhao, once he explained himself like this, everything suddenly made sense.
She had wondered when their Marquis ever enjoyed wearing such a gaudy color.
Inside the tent came the sound of someone so angry that she began stomping her feet.
Xiao Ji winked at Yu Jin and said, “Do not worry, because the Holy Maiden and the Dongyi King are in our hands, they will not dare to do anything to the princess. We will hold our position for now, and once they become too anxious to endure it, they will naturally come to negotiate terms with us.”
Yu Jin froze for another moment, but then she suddenly understood everything.
Her silly princess had been tricked by Lord Marquis yet again.
Yu Jin really could not bear to look; the princess was clearly an extremely intelligent person, but once she fell into the hands of this sly old fox of a Marquis, she would be eaten clean every single time.
“Then… does this servant need to prepare anything?” She began learning his bad ways as well.
Smart girl, Yu Jin.
Xiao Ji’s eyes were filled with amusement, but his tone was deliberately indifferent as he said, “Prepare some hot water, and in a moment we will let the Holy Maiden wash up. Then tell the kitchen to prepare some food; the Holy Maiden does not eat spicy dishes, so remember to put in less chili.”
The noises inside the tent had escalated from stomping feet to pounding fists on the table.
Yu Jin who felt pity in her heart: Lord Marquis, you are going too far.
“I know, I will go now.” Xiao Ji suppressed his smile and turned to enter the tent.
Inside, Yu Jin had tidied the place thoroughly, adding some furniture and replacing the bedding with softer and warmer quilts.
Princess Xinyang was currently sitting on a stool padded with cotton, and from head to toe she radiated the murderous aura of someone who intended to kill Xiao Ji.
The wedding attire of the Dongyi Tribe had pockets hidden in the folds on both sides.
Xiao Ji stuffed his hands into those pockets, and with a roguish and careless air, he walked to Princess Xinyang’s side and sat down as he said, “Holy Maiden, the long journey must have been exhausting, right?”
You know I am locked in the Holy Maiden Hall, yet all you care about is the Holy Maiden!
If I possessed Long Yi’s martial skill, you would already be dead!
Xiao Ji was truly on the verge of losing control, for the corners of his lips kept lifting and he could not suppress his smile; fortunately, she was wearing a bridal veil and could not see him.
He stood up and fiddled with something inside the tent, apparently lighting a candle, and Princess Xinyang felt the glow of light spreading across the floor.
Xiao Ji said softly, “During the wedding ceremony, my wife was so devout, whereas I, Xiao, was the one who behaved rudely. I truly feel guilty, and from this day forward I shall never fail my wife.”
You even called her “wife”!
You have never addressed me like that before!
Princess Xinyang’s decades of calm composure shattered completely at this moment, and she finally became a little ball of furious feathers.
She raised her hand in a swift motion, intending to lift the veil and confront him on the spot, and she planned to tell him that from today on, she would never have anything to do with him again for the rest of their lives.
Yet before her hand could rise halfway, it was gently caught by Xiao Ji’s large palm.
Xiao Ji said, “The bridal veil on a wedding night should naturally be lifted by the husband.”
“Lord Marquis, the hot water has arrived.”
From outside came Yu Jin’s voice reporting in.
“Bring it in.” Xiao Ji said.
Yu Jin carried in a basin of hot water, and then she turned around to bring over a box of refreshments. “The main dishes will take some time, so Lord Marquis and… ahem, the two of you can fill your stomachs first.”
After she left, Princess Xinyang continued to fume.
Yet suddenly, a strange object entered her field of vision.
It seemed somewhat familiar, but she could not recall what it was for the moment.
Before she could remember, the bridal veil was lifted.
What entered her sight was a handsome and captivating face, exactly like the one she had seen on their wedding night many years ago, belonging to the young man who had worn wedding robes and used a jade ruyi to lift her bridal veil.
Although his face now bore the refined elegance accumulated through the passing of years, the anticipation and joy that shone in his eyes had not changed in the slightest.
He looked at her with a gentle smile, a brightness in his gaze that remained pure and untouched by time, and although he carried that same goodness from the past, there was now an added hint of mature restraint and domineering presence.
Princess Xinyang froze.
For a fleeting moment, she truly felt as though she had returned to twenty years ago.
The two of them had changed mostly in temperament rather than appearances over these twenty years, as if time had, in some way, forgotten them; she remained as beautiful as ever, and he remained as elegant and handsome as before.
“You…”
She opened her mouth, only to discover that not a single sound could emerge from her throat.
She lowered her gaze and looked again at the object in his hand.
No wonder it looked familiar, so it was the jade ruyi.
She would have to be extremely foolish not to understand by now; since he had shown no surprise at all after lifting her veil earlier, that meant he had long known she was beneath it.
This man, had he been teasing her the entire journey?
She felt that this was not right, and she very much wanted to stay angry at him, yet when she looked into his eyes, which were exactly the same as in the past, and then looked at the jade ruyi in his hand, as well as the dragon-and-phoenix wedding candles that had somehow been lit on the table, she could not help but feel a surge of emotion in her heart.
“When… did you prepare these?” she asked softly.
“You mean this?” Xiao Ji smiled and glanced at the jade ruyi in his hand as he said, “On the road. When we were close to the military camp, we stopped at a town.”
Had the carriage stopped?
She had been so focused on her anger that she had completely failed to notice such details.
So he had deliberately let her act as the Holy Maiden all the way, just for the sake of this?
If she thought carefully, it did make sense; if he had said earlier that he had recognized her, then in front of Long Yi and Zhen’er, with her thin skin, she absolutely would not have continued wearing the bridal veil to act as a bride.
She had originally thought that everything would end after the wedding ceremony, because that was the moment she had agreed with Long Yi to take action.
By then, she had no other expectations left in her heart.
But how had this man even come up with such a shameless idea? He infuriated her on one hand, while on the other hand, when she was not paying attention, he somehow procured wedding candles and a jade ruyi.
And Xiao Ji did not stop at bringing the dragon-and-phoenix candles and the jade ruyi; he had also brought with him the nuptial wine they had never drunk back then.
He poured two cups of the wine, and he handed one to her. “The wine at the border cannot compare to the richly fragrant imperial wine of the palace, so you will have to put up with this for now.”
Princess Xinyang lowered her eyes to look at the flicker of light reflecting in the wine. “How did you recognize me?”
Xiao Ji laughed. “With the way you bowed during the ceremony, were you afraid that I would fail to recognize you?”
Princess Xinyang’s face flushed as she thought of saying, were you not exactly the same back then?
The two of them raised their connected wrists and tilted their heads back to drink the nuptial wine that had arrived more than twenty years late.
She did not know whether it was the effect of the wine or the charcoal burning inside the tent, but her cheeks turned bright red.
Xiao Ji gazed at her deeply. “Qin Fengwen, do you know what nuptial wine signifies?”
“Mm?” Princess Xinyang was startled by the sudden question.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
