Meanwhile, after finishing his martial practice, reading, and homework, Little Jing Kong finally waited until nearly mid-morning, when Gu Jiao at last emerged from her room.
He leapt down from the swing set in a flash and ran with all his might with his little feet pounding toward Gu Jiao.
“JiaoJiao!”
He spread open his little arms, ready to fling himself into her embrace just as he always did.
But halfway through his leap, he abruptly stopped himself.
He channeled his energy into his dantian, steadying his lower body, planting his stance firmly; his small feet nailed to the ground and his little body swaying but refusing to topple forward.
Lifting his head in disbelief, he pointed his tiny finger at Gu Jiao’s face. “Jiao… JiaoJiao?”
Gu Jiao curved her lips into a smile, walked over, and rubbed his little head with her hand. “Wow, where have you been? You’ve gotten tanner again.”
On the day of the grand wedding, he had still been like a freshly boiled egg. Now he was almost like a shiny little braised egg.
“Ah!”
He quickly covered his head, and with grievance and resentment said, “It’s all Big Brother Qing’s fault! He made me stay on the boat for three days under the sun! I’ve been roasted into a little dried fish!”
Gu Jiao thought of that scene and bent over with laughter.
She laughed so heartily that Little Jing Kong was enchanted by her smile, and he too felt an indescribable joy.
“But JiaoJiao.” He looked curiously at the left side of her face, “Why is the flower on your face gone?”
Flower?
Gu Jiao froze for a moment.
Then she suddenly realized something. Little Jing Kong had used the proper word just now.
He had grown up. He was no longer the three-year-old little monk who had just come down from the mountain.
A feeling that could not be put into words welled up in Gu Jiao’s heart.
Was it relief?
Or melancholy?
Perhaps even a trace of unwillingness.
She wanted to rub him back into being that little dumpling who followed right behind her every day, calling her “JiaoJiao” in a milky childish voice.
The one who would cry heaven and earth apart when he opened his eyes and could not see her, the one who let her plant kisses on his little cheeks and would water those kisses daily, waiting for sprouts to grow.
The one who always sat on the threshold, waiting for her to come home.
“JiaoJiao, what’s the matter?” Little Jing Kong saw that Gu Jiao suddenly fell silent while staring at him, and he could not help but ask.
His little eyes were filled with unconcealed care and worry.
No matter how much he grew up, he was still her Jing Kong.
Gu Jiao stroked his small head and said softly, “Because I grew up too, so that flower disappeared.”
The six-year-old Little Jing Kong thought seriously, drawing on all the book knowledge and farming knowledge he had, and said, “Like a crabapple blossom? When the flower disappears, does that mean it’s going to grow a little fruit?”
The pea shoots he planted in the countryside would also bloom and bear fruit after growing up.
Gu Jiao thought for a moment and replied, “For now, I don’t know yet.”
“Oh.” He immediately thought of the pea shoots in the countryside, unsure whether every single one of them bloomed and bore fruit. He decided he would plant a few more to observe carefully.
Little Jing Kong looked at Gu Jiao, his large eyes brimming with the innocence and purity of a child. “JiaoJiao, don’t be sad! Even without the little flower you’re still very pretty! The prettiest!”
Children had their own unique sense of aesthetics. In Little Jing Kong’s eyes, whether Gu Jiao had a birthmark or not, she was the most beautiful girl in the world.
……
On the other side, Marquis Xuanping personally set out and captured Young Gentleman Ming Yue and his guard near Bishui Alley.
He brought the two of them back to a place within Marquis Xuanping Estate that was specifically used to interrogate disobedient people.
A man like him, his hands already soaked in blood, was no gentleman in the shadows.
The carriage stopped at the gate of the courtyard.
The guard lifted the curtain, and Marquis Xuanping took a handkerchief to wipe the bloodstains from his hands, saying indifferently, “Chang Jing is not here, so even such a trivial matter must be handled by this Marquis personally.”
The guards dared not make a sound.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue was not easy to deal with; ordinary dark guards could not subdue him.
Marquis Xuanping tossed aside the bloodstained handkerchief and descended from the carriage, his expression ice-cold.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue and his guard were tied up inside a pitch-dark chamber, restrained on wooden racks.
The guard could not withstand torture and had already fainted.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue, however, was still conscious. He had not yet been subjected to punishment; the wounds on his body were from his earlier clash with Marquis Xuanping.
His arms were spread wide, bound immovably by iron chains. The blood from the corner of his lips trickled downward, dripping one by one from his filth-stained chin onto the cold floor.
He glared at Marquis Xuanping with icy eyes brimming with killing intent.
Marquis Xuanping, utterly unafraid, strode onto the torture platform like a sovereign of the night. In an instant, Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s killing intent was drowned out and crushed beneath his aura, as if a clay ox had plunged into the sea without a trace.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s gaze quivered violently.
This man was dangerous!
With unbridled arrogance, Marquis Xuanping said, “This Marquis does not like wasting words, nor am I accustomed to circling around. Speak truthfully, who are you, who is Shi Tian, and what exactly is your connection with the Sword Lodge. Also——”
As he spoke, he shot a glance at the guard standing nearby.
The guard understood the signal and swiftly tore open Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s robe, revealing his strong and well-built chest.
And right above his heart, there was a patch of skin, dark red and nearly black.
Marquis Xuanping narrowed his eyes slightly. “So you were poisoned with gu. No wonder your strength has been eroded to the point that you cannot bring out your true skill.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue clenched his teeth and turned his face away. “I will not speak.”
Marquis Xuanping smiled faintly. “You don’t need to. This Marquis has already guessed it.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue whipped his head toward him, frowning. “What have you guessed?”
Marquis Xuanping chuckled. “You escaped from the Sword Lodge without permission. That sword you carry, you smuggled it out as well. But without it, you cannot return.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s pupils contracted violently. He stared at him in disbelief.
Marquis Xuanping paced a few steps before him, speaking thoughtfully, “It seems that sword is the true key to the Sword Lodge. There must be some kind of passage or mechanism that can only be opened with it. No wonder you so generously drew the map. You were certain that we would never reach the island. And even if we did, we would all die in those mechanisms.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue could hardly believe this was real.
Marquis Xuanping of the State of Zhao… Young Gentleman Ming Yue had stayed in the State of Zhao for so long, so how could he have never heard of such a figure?
But wasn’t this man supposed to be nothing more than a brawny, brainless brute?
Why was he completely different from the rumors?
Marquis Xuanping turned around, leisurely walked down the steps, lifted his hand in a casual wave, and said indifferently, “Kill him.”
“Yes!” The guard cupped his fists, then drew the longsword at his waist.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s heart gave a violent jolt.
Wasn’t he supposed to be interrogating him?
This was far too abrupt!
He had not yet spoken of Shi Tian, nor revealed his own origins, did this man not want to know any of it?
“Isn’t this a bit too hasty?”
Marquis Xuanping turned his head, an arrogant smile on his lips. “Now that I have both the map and the key, you no longer have any value. Whatever I wish to know, I can discover once I reach the island.”
The guard swung his longsword down toward his head!
Almost by instinct, Young Gentleman Ming Yue blurted out, “I am the Young Master of the Sword Lodge! The sect leader is my father!”
Marquis Xuanping flicked his long arm, releasing a concealed weapon that struck the guard’s blade, knocking it aside.
Never before had Young Gentleman Ming Yue felt death so vividly.
Cold sweat drenched his body, mixing with blood, sticking thickly against his clothes.
This man was terrifying.
Had he truly intended to kill him, or had he been certain that he would confess?
The worst part was that at the edge of death, there was no time for lies. What came out was always the truth!
Damn it!
Marquis Xuanping looked at him with a half-smile. “So then, Young Master of the Sword Lodge, shall we have a pleasant cooperation?”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
