Liao Chen returned to Duke An Estate in the middle of the night. Having been chased for three days, he finally managed to shake off his pursuer.

He scaled the wall into the courtyard. After three days on the run, he wondered if his father had gone out to look for him, if he had been terribly worried.

He went straight to reassure him.

“Father hasn’t slept yet. Looks like he really is worried about me…”

Liao Chen knocked on the door.

“Come in.” Xuanyuan Qi said.

Liao Chen pushed the door open and saw his father sitting by the window, carefully polishing a silver-inlaid wolf-fang pendant with a handkerchief.

That pendant was his father’s personal treasure, worn close for decades. It was said to have been a birthday gift from the very first Lord of the Shadows, kept safely by him ever since.

Liao Chen smiled and said, “Father, I’m back. Sorry, I ran into some trouble these past few days and made you worry.”

Xuanyuan Qi glanced at him, swiftly put the pendant away, almost as though afraid his own son would steal it.

Liao Chen was utterly speechless. “You don’t need to guard it from me, I’m not going to steal it.”

Xuanyuan Qi snorted, “Who knows.”

Liao Chen: “…”

Xuanyuan Qi said flatly, “I wasn’t worried.”

Liao Chen froze for a moment, then realized his father was responding to his very first remark.

He looked puzzled. “I… was missing for three days, and you weren’t worried?”

Xuanyuan Qi said calmly, “Qing’er told me, you went to chase after your wife, and told me not to go looking for you.”

Liao Chen: “???”

Shangguan Qing, you come out right now. I swear I won’t beat you to death!

Xuanyuan Qi’s martial arts were too good; that day, he had sobered up halfway through being drunk. When he noticed his son was gone, he had wanted to go find him immediately. Shangguan Qing, quick-witted in the moment, came up with this desperate excuse to fool Xuanyuan Qi.

And then, under the pretense of congratulating Xuanyuan Qi, he managed to get him drunk all over again.

“And my daughter-in-law?” Xuanyuan Qi asked with eyes full of anticipation.

Liao Chen: “…”

……

On the twenty-second day of the sixth month, after finishing a three-day trip in the capital, Little Jing Kong and Shangguan Qing finally returned to the Princess Mansion.

The moment he hopped off the carriage, Little Jing Kong bolted at full speed toward Lanting Courtyard. Shangguan Qing tried to stop him but couldn’t.

Watching the little fellow’s small back disappear with a da-da-da of hurried steps, Shangguan Qing, already worn to the bone, let out a long, exhausted sigh. “This is as far as I can help you, little brother.”

Just three days with this kid had nearly broken him. He truly couldn’t fathom how his younger brother had once managed to take the little monk all the way from the State of Zhao to the State of Yan.

And another thing, one new firelance was nowhere near enough. That stinky younger brother owed him at least three firelances for compensation!

“Young master!”

A servant spotted Shangguan Qing and hurried over to pay his respects.

Shangguan Qing, his body stiff with fatigue, said weakly, “Come here, help me up. I can’t move anymore.”

That little monk had drained him of every last drop of strength!

Meanwhile, Little Jing Kong had just reached Lanting Courtyard when he was intercepted mercilessly by his brother-in-law.

The bad brother-in-law scooped him up under his arm and carried him straight to the training room.

“I want to see JiaoJiao.” He said with a dark little face.

“JiaoJiao hasn’t woken yet. I’ll take you to see her later.” Xiao Heng replied.

Little Jing Kong tilted his head up at his bad brother-in-law. “Why hasn’t she woken up? Is JiaoJiao sick?”

One could hardly blame Little Jing Kong for asking. Gu Jiao’s routine was so regular that she had always been the earliest riser in the household. The only times she ever rose later than usual were when she was unwell.

Xiao Heng said evenly, without betraying anything, “She’s not sick. JiaoJiao just went to bed late.”

“Why did JiaoJiao go to bed late?” Little Jing Kong pressed.

Xiao Heng of course could not tell him the real reason, so he said instead, “Because JiaoJiao just got married. As a new bride, she has many things to take care of, like the luggage and dowry she brought over from the wedding, all of which need to be sorted.”

“There really were a lot of things brought that day.” Little Jing Kong nodded solemnly, then looked at Xiao Heng with disapproval. “Why aren’t you the one sorting them? Why make JiaoJiao do it? You’re far too lazy! You don’t lift a finger! Even Xiaobao is more diligent than you!”

Xiao Heng, who had in fact been “very diligent” all through the night: “…”

……

At Lanting Courtyard, a separate practice room and back garden had been prepared especially for Little Jing Kong, where he could exert himself as much as he liked.

After setting him down, Xiao Heng went straight to the study to tend to his own affairs.

Shangguan Qing, meanwhile, was carried into the study by two young servants. His cheeks were thin, his appearance disheveled, looking utterly pitiful and miserable.

Xiao Heng, who was in the middle of arranging his desk, was startled by the sight of him. “What happened to you? Did someone beat you up?”

Shangguan Qing gestured for the servants to seat him on the chair opposite the desk.

The servants guided him to the southeast corner, but he shook his head and signaled with his eyes, “I want that seat over there.”

That seat faced directly toward his younger brother, allowing his tragic state to be revealed without a single angle concealed.

It had to be said, when it came to “putting themselves on display,” the father and the two sons all possessed an innate gift and natural talent.

Once he had seated himself with difficulty and pain, he said to the servants, “That’s enough, you may withdraw.”

The two servants left without a word.

Xiao Heng flipped through the books in his hand, picking out the ones that needed to be aired, then glanced at him and said, “You are my father’s son. In the capital of the State of Zhao, surely no one would dare to beat you. Let me guess, are you here to ask for firelances again?”

Shangguan Qing inhaled sharply. This rotten younger brother, what manner of fiend was he, to see through his intentions in a single glance?

He opened his mouth to speak.

But Xiao Heng did not give him the chance. “Don’t deny it. I’ve seen right through you.”

Shangguan Qing’s handsome face darkened.

In an instant, he discarded his frail act. He propped his foot arrogantly on the desk, folded his hands behind his head, leaned back against the chair, and spoke carelessly, “Tell me then, where exactly did I give myself away?”

Xiao Heng chuckled. “You didn’t give yourself away. I was bluffing you.”

Shangguan Qing’s whole body jolted. That girl bluffing him was one thing, but his younger brother too! The two of them really were a pair made in heaven!

“I don’t care.” He turned his face away, sulking. “Looking after that little monk for you nearly cost me half my life! You at least have to make me ten new firelances!”

“Two.” Xiao Heng bargained.

Shangguan Qing instantly pulled his foot back from the desk and sat up straight, glaring at him. “Isn’t bargaining usually cutting it in half?”

Xiao Heng thought for a moment. “Then… one?”

Half of two was one.

Shangguan Qing narrowed his eyes dangerously. “I’ll go tell Princess Mother and say you’re bullying me.”

Xiao Heng replied with calm indifference, “The poison has already been purged, yet you still claim to be bullied by a frail scholar like me. It seems, elder brother, that you’ve not been practicing your stances properly.”

Shangguan Qing’s mouth twitched. “Three. Not a piece less.”

Xiao Heng: “Deal.”

Shangguan Qing: “You won’t even fight me on it this time?”

If I’d known, I would have said four!

Thus ended another episode in the daily series of failing to outwit his younger brother. Shangguan Qing could only return to his own courtyard.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
