Feng County, on the official road transporting grain and fodder, had just witnessed a brutal battle. The thick, cloying scent of blood filled the open space, lingering in the air like an unshakable fog.

Cheng Fugui had his arm suspended in a sling made of gauze as he commanded the uninjured soldiers to count and organize the provisions.

It seemed that the city truly happened to be short on grain and fodder, so this time, all the supplies were genuine.

This was an enormous gain.

This was an unprecedented large-scale war, one that would not end easily. Stockpiling as many provisions as possible was always the right move.

This was not a place to linger for long.

In the meantime, Gu Jiao led four medical officers, tending urgently to the wounded soldiers.

"Bear with it for a bit." Gu Jiao said to a cavalryman with a dislocated arm.

The cavalryman nodded.

Gu Jiao swiftly maneuvered his arm back into place with a sharp crack, then took out gauze from the little medicine chest, wrapped his arm, and, just like Cheng Fugui’s, secured it in a sling around his neck.

After that, Gu Jiao moved on to treat the next wounded soldier.

Drawing her blade, she sterilized the wound, stopped the bleeding, sutured the gash, and applied fresh gauze, all in one seamless motion.

The soldiers who had finished counting the provisions rested on the spot, recovering their strength.

But Gu Jiao could not afford to rest.

There were no beds here. The soldiers lay sprawled directly on the ground, and she could only kneel to treat them one by one. The cold, rigid armor scraped against her knees, grinding the skin raw.

She knelt before a soldier who was covered in blood.

He was young, a fresh recruit who had just enlisted this year.

His family was poor, and he had joined the army to earn money for his grandfather’s medical treatment. He had a natural talent for cavalry and was immediately selected by Cheng Fugui to join the Black Wind Cavalry.

"My leg…" He stared at his swollen, wounded thigh, his eyes suddenly welling up with fearful tears.

This was his first time on the battlefield, his first time facing severe injuries and the looming shadow of death.

"You won’t be crippled. It’ll heal." Gu Jiao assured him.

"Really?" The young soldier asked, choking back a sob.

Gu Jiao nodded. "Yes, really. But only if you behave; no whining, no crying."

He instantly swallowed back his tears, afraid that even a single sob would somehow make things worse.

Gu Jiao took out an anesthetic and administered a local numbing agent before making an incision with her scalpel.

With a pair of forceps, she carefully extracted the shattered fragments of a sword blade lodged deep within his flesh, bit by bit.

The young soldier dared not watch what she was doing. He turned his head and squeezed his eyes shut.

Yet, the other cavalrymen couldn't help but glance over in her direction.

To be honest, the performance of this newly appointed young commander today had been rather unexpected.

Nangong Ze was a renowned warlord at the border, known for his ruthless prowess. He had personally led troops to escort the grain convoy, waiting for the Black Wind Cavalry to take the bait.

At that moment, the cavalrymen had been worried that their young commander would be a burden.

They had thought at the time, Young Commander, why don’t you step aside for a bit?

Let us finish looting the provisions first, then you can come over to claim the credit, alright?

With the mindset of adults humoring a child, they had hoped their young commander would stay out of trouble.

Who could have predicted that the young commander would be so fierce, driving a spear straight through Nangong Ze’s hand and nailing it to the ground?

At that moment, every hair on their bodies had stood on end.

It was as if… they had thought they were raising a house cat, only to turn around and discover it was a young leopard, and it had just taken down the big bad wolf they themselves feared!

A cavalryman whispered to the squad leader beside him, "Uh… just now, I almost got stabbed. It was the Young Commander who deflected the attack for me."

If not for that single strike from the Young Commander, he would probably be in worse shape than Goudan right now.

Goudan was the name of the wounded young soldier.

The cavalryman continued glancing at Gu Jiao discreetly, lowering his voice further. "Squad Leader, don’t you think the Young Commander is actually kinda impressive?"

The squad leader was just about to say something when Gu Jiao seemed to sense their conversation and glanced in their direction.

In an instant, every soldier snapped their gaze away—some looked up at the sky, others focused intently on their feet.

The moment Gu Jiao returned to treating the wounded, however, all their eyes simultaneously drifted back to her.

Gu Jiao had already moved on to the next injured soldier.

This one had fainted and, upon regaining consciousness, found himself staring at the syringe in Gu Jiao’s hand. He immediately let out a terrified wail.

Without hesitation, Gu Jiao jabbed the needle into his backside.

No nonsense.

Humph.

He had a deep and tightly sealed wound, and the injection Gu Jiao administered was for tetanus.

Everyone stared at Gu Jiao without blinking.

Just now… did the Young Commander just snort?

Why was the Young Commander kind of… cute when acting fierce?

At that moment, Gu Jiao ran out of hemostatic powder. She retrieved a new bottle from the little medicine chest, but just as she tore it open, her nose itched, and she sneezed.

"Achoo!"

Her small frame jolted, and the fine white powder puffed up, covering her entire face.

She stared in stunned silence at the bottle, now half-empty, her heart aching so much that even her expression cracked in distress.

"Damn…"

Someone in the group couldn’t hold back and let out a remark.

The others clutched their chests.

They couldn’t take it.

…The Young Commander was simply too adorable.

The Nangong Family’s rebel forces could attack at any moment, so only emergency treatment could be performed for now. Even intravenous drips would have to wait until they reached a safe location.

Once Gu Jiao and the medical officers finished treating all the wounded, the two-thousand-strong force set off for the canyon.

The cavalrymen were still full of curiosity about what had just happened. A few bold ones stopped one of the medical officers.

The leading cavalryman asked, "The Young Commander knows medicine too? Did you teach him?"

The medical officer chuckled and replied, "You're mistaken. It was Lord Xiao who taught us medicine!"

"Ah?" The cavalrymen looked utterly baffled.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
