vVictory in war was not determined by individual strength but by the coordination of the entire force. Despite not being as skilled in martial arts as An Hun, Nangong Ze was no weakling when it came to commanding an army.

Had he not fixated so much on Gu Jiao today and instead focused on leading his troops properly, he wouldn’t have suffered such a crushing defeat.

Of course, the fact that Gu Jiao’s age made her an easy target for underestimation also played a role. After all, who would have expected a mere teenager to defeat one of the Nangong Family’s top warriors?

With Nangong Ze captured alive, the rebels’ morale shattered. The Black Wind Cavalry seized the momentum and launched a decisive assault, leaving the enemy utterly devastated!

Gu Jiao ordered Cheng Fugui to leave a few survivors. "Go tell your Nangong Family’s head—I, Xiao Liulang, have come! It was I who killed his second son, Nangong Li! And now, I have captured his third son, Nangong Ze! If he wants his son back, he can exchange him for Quyang City! Otherwise, I’ll take his son’s head and hang it from the Black Wind Cavalry’s flagpole!"

At the mere thought of such a triumphant sight, the entire Black Wind Cavalry erupted in deafening war cries, raising their weapons high.

"Kill! Kill! Kill!"

Their roars shook the heavens, piercing through the sky like a storm.

The few remaining rebels trembled in sheer terror, their faces drained of color.

Gu Jiao swept her spear through the air and declared sternly, "And one more thing—if the Nangong Family refuses to surrender, I will march into Quyang City myself and slaughter every last one of them!"

……

"Report! Report!"

In the City Lord’s residence, the Nangong Family head was seated in the reception hall, playing with his grandson. Upon hearing the urgent cries of a soldier, he gestured for a servant to take the three-year-old away before summoning the soldier forward.

"What is it?" The Nangong Family head’s face darkened. Being interrupted during a moment of family leisure left him displeased.

The soldier dropped to one knee, his expression filled with anxiety. "Reporting to the City Lord—Third Master… he has been captured!"

The Nangong Family head’s gaze turned icy. His large hand gripped the armrest, and he shot to his feet with a sharp motion. "What did you say? Who was captured? And by whom?"

The soldier cupped his fists and answered, "Third Master was captured by Xiao Liulang of the Black Wind Cavalry! Xiao Liulang says if we want him back, we must exchange him for Quyang City! And he also said… he also said…"

The Nangong Family head’s fingers dug into the armrest, his teeth clenched tightly. "He also said what?"

The soldier spoke fearfully, “He also said that if the City Lord does not surrender, he will storm into the city and… and wipe out the entire Nangong Family!”

The Nangong Family head slammed his palm down, shattering the armrest of his chair. “Outrageous!”

“Father!”

His eldest son, Nangong Cheng, strode swiftly into the reception hall. “I just came from the city walls. I heard Third Brother was captured?”

The Nangong Family head trembled with fury. “Xiao Liulang… It’s him again, that Xiao Liulang!”

Nangong Cheng was utterly shocked. “It was actually him?”

Suppressing his overwhelming rage, the Nangong Family head closed his eyes for a brief moment. “I told him to bring more troops, but he just wouldn’t listen!”

Nangong Cheng did not respond.

In reality, there had been no way to bring more troops at the time. The task assigned to his third and fourth brothers had been to lure the Black Wind Army out of the mountains.

If the two had taken too many soldiers, the Black Wind Cavalry—seeing little chance of victory—would never have left the mountains to raid their supply lines.

Moreover, their primary target was Xiao Liulang. Whether it was his third or fourth brother who encountered him, the goal had been the same: capture him alive if possible, and if not—kill him!

Nangong Cheng furrowed his brows. “I didn’t expect this Xiao Liulang to be so formidable. On the very first day he revealed himself, Third Brother had already fallen into his hands. I wonder how things are going on Fourth Brother’s side?”

The Nangong Family head said, “Your fourth brother didn’t encounter Xiao Liulang, so he should be fine for now. What we need to figure out is how to rescue your third brother!”

“Grandfather!”

A woman in crimson armor, carrying a jeweled sword, strode into the hall with a stern and resolute expression. She cupped her hands in salute to the Nangong Family head and Nangong Cheng. “Grandfather, Eldest Uncle, please allow me to lead our troops to rescue my father!”

Had Gu Jiao been present, she would have immediately recognized this woman as Nangong Jing, the direct daughter of the Nangong Family’s third household—the very same woman who had once ruined her own reputation to pull Fifth Master Han down from his position during the Black Wind Cavalry’s commander selection.

As the daughter of a general’s family, Nangong Jing possessed considerable martial skill.

“Grandfather! I will go too! I must avenge my father!”

Nangong Li’s youngest son, Nangong Lin, stormed in, seething with murderous intent.

Nangong Cheng spoke in a grave tone, “Both of you, stop this nonsense and return to your rooms! Even your father was no match for Xiao Liulang. Do you really think you can gain any advantage against him?”

Bringing this up only fueled Nangong Cheng and the Nangong Family head’s irritation.

They had already learned that this Xiao Liulang was an impostor. He wasn’t truly nineteen years old. Judging by his appearance, he was merely a youth of sixteen or seventeen.

Yet he possessed such astounding abilities!

Before Xiao Liulang’s arrival, the Nangong Family had always taken pride in their younger generation, believing them to be talented, accomplished in both civil and martial pursuits, and destined to surpass their elders.

But ever since Xiao Liulang emerged, their own children seemed far less impressive.

Could the gap between people really be so vast?

“Stand down!” The Nangong Family head ordered in a deep voice.

Given the turbulent times, his temper had become more volatile than before. Nangong Lin and Nangong Jing stiffened under his reprimand. After exchanging reluctant glances, they begrudgingly withdrew.

Nangong Cheng reassured, “Father, please quell your anger. I will find a way to bring Third Brother back.”

The Nangong Family head said bitterly, “That boy is ruthless. Your third brother will surely suffer greatly in his hands.”

After a moment of thought, Nangong Cheng said, “Father, I believe there is still room for negotiation. He didn’t kill Third Brother outright but instead proposed a deal. This suggests that he lacks the military strength to challenge our city’s army head-on. We could turn this situation to our advantage—agree to negotiations, lure Xiao Liulang into Quyang City, and then seize the opportunity to kill him!”

The Nangong Family head responded coldly, “And how do you know we won’t be inviting a wolf into our home? Xiao Liulang is cunning. If we let him into the city and he incites the people in Xuanyuan Army’s name, the consequences will be unimaginable! He must be killed outside the city! Summon Chang Wei!”

Nangong Cheng asked, “Father, are you planning to have General Chang Wei confront Xiao Liulang?”

The Nangong Family head’s voice was icy. “Chang Wei is the most trusted general under our Nangong Family. He is highly skilled in martial arts, fearless in battle, and has never suffered a defeat despite the many conflicts at the border over the years. He will take all the troops in the city and annihilate the Black Wind Cavalry without exception!”

Though the Black Wind Cavalry numbered only fifty thousand, it was the most formidable military force in Great Yan and the first army ever established by the Xuanyuan Family. It was through their cavalry that the Xuanyuan Family had once dominated the six states. Later, other divisions such as the archery battalions, infantry regiments, and siege wagon units had gradually formed.

To break the fighting spirit of the three main armies, they first had to eliminate the Black Wind Cavalry!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
