Chapter 724: The Fork In The Road
Chapter 724: The Fork In The Road
“Now we pray that the big boys don’t know I’m out,” Astaroth said, rubbing his temples in annoyance.
“You broke the oath already?” Rael raised a brow. “I thought it would take a little longer considering how you’re a big shot and all.”
Astaroth scoffed.
“Big shot my ass. I’m a big shot in a bubble. A King is still considered a child compared to the people at the top. Anyhow, create a portal back to where you came from. Let’s cross the abyss and get out of here.”
“Did you gain modesty now?” Rael asked.
He had never seen Astaroth be so open about stuff like this, especially when he considered himself one of the biggest and baddest beings in the universe.
At least, that was how he came off.
But now, he seemed just like any ordinary dragon.
Was it because of Victoria?
The power of a woman’s touch…
“Screw modesty. And… shit.”
Astaroth’s expression crumbled slightly as he suddenly glanced up.
Rael followed his gaze, and to his genuine surprise, he noticed a pale white eye in the sky, looking directly at them.
Although Rael didn’t know who that person or being was, the fact that he couldn’t inspect it was bad enough.
And Astaroth’s expression was just the cherry on top.
“Create a portal fucking now,” Astaroth said urgently.
Rael was about to do it, but Victoria was already on it.
In an instant, a portal appeared in front of them, and the three of them quickly ran through it.
It took a while to arrive on the other side. However, when the three of them reappeared, instead of the spatial crack to the abyss, there was a man with pale white hair standing in front of them.
Similarly, he had pale white eyes.
…It looked like the eye in the sky was this person.
In the same manner, Rael couldn’t inspect him.
In fact, he couldn’t even feel his mana, or anything of the sort.
It was as though he was there, but not really there at the same time.
Just what kind of being was this?
Rael couldn’t put his finger on it, but seeing the pale expressions on both Victoria’s and Astaroth’s faces, he knew this guy was not to be messed with.
“Hello,” he said.
He sounded like a normal person.
“I couldn’t help but notice you’re trying to escape. Why is that so?”
But he definitely didn’t talk like one.
“Sir… I’ve been in the Spirit Realm for several eons now. Every single one of my contractors has become powerful existences. Can’t you just excuse it this once?”
The man shook his head.
“Astaroth, you should go back and not cause any further inconvenience for us. If you do that, I will act like nothing ever happened. Simply remake your oath. That is all I will say. The decision is now entirely in your hands.”
His calm voice was definitely not a very pleasant thing to hear, especially when everyone except for Rael was trembling in their shoes.
Rael couldn’t recognize him.
Even as he looked through his memories, nothing rang a bell.
That was until he caught sight of one of the Eternal Dream’s memories.
They were of a being with similar features to this person here, and the Eternal Dream had only one encounter with this being.
It was when the Eternal Dream fought against this being, and despite his great strength, was absolutely destroyed.
The Eternal Dream didn’t stand even a chance.
But he did have a special way of calling the being.
A Higher God.
The same individuals that Rael had been hearing so much about.
But what was a Higher God doing in the Spirit Realm?
What even was their role?
Rael had so many questions.
But all those questions seemed like they vanished when he and the Higher God locked eyes.
For a moment, Rael felt like his mind cleared up.
Not only that, the several galaxy orbs rotating around his head suddenly halted.
An amused expression appeared on the Higher God’s face.
“I don’t remember vetting you. How were you able to become a Ruler of the Cosmos?”
Back when Rael first became this race, it said that he needed the approval of a Higher God.
And clearly, since he bypassed it… it was a big problem.
“Would you believe me if I said it was all because of luck?” Rael replied.
The Higher God shrugged.
“It is never just luck. But you would know that if you truly gained access to such a race.”
But then he looked a bit closer.
Rael felt as if the Higher God was staring directly into his soul and reading his every memory.
But what were the odds that it could do that?
Especially now that he had the Law of Infinity…
And it seemed like Rael was right on the money.
“Say, nameless one. May I interest you in a position above the universe?”
“Above the what now…?” Rael mumbled. “No, I don’t think I’m interested at all. I have no intentions of leaving this universe.”
The Higher God tilted his head slightly.
“Even if your universe ceases to exist?”
“…”
“If you destroy my universe, then you will be destroying me as well.”
Rael narrowed his eyes.
“I’m not your ally, but I’m not your enemy either. So before I inevitably die myself, I would make sure I kill every last one of you.”
He bowed slightly.
“Sir, Higher God. May we leave now?”
The moment Rael finished speaking, an uncomfortable silence descended.
Astaroth and Victoria were nothing short of stunned, and even the Higher God in front of him was a little bit surprised by Rael’s answer.
More so by the fact that he even knew about the Higher Gods in the first place.
However, Rael’s bold actions also seemed to bear some fruit.
The Higher God suddenly stepped aside, giving way to the spatial crack.
“I will be back to speak to you once again, nameless one. But until then, I will close my eyes, so the three of you may leave.”
