Chapter 3097: How Could I Possibly Die?

Chapter 3097: How Could I Possibly Die?

Gong Rong didn’t recall ever telling this woman that he didn’t have long to live.

He set down the bread in his hand and looked at her. He said, “I’m only eighteen. How could I possibly die?”

Ning Shu shrugged and replied with zero sincerity, “You can think whatever makes you happy.”

Ning Shu particularly enjoyed watching other people struggle in vain, especially when the other person was Gong Rong. She added, “Money can’t do everything, you know. You can’t buy a life with it.”

“That’s true,” Gong Rong said coolly. “Just like your mother, lying in the hospital, unable to have surgery simply because there’s no money.”

“Some people’s lives can be bought with money, but some other people’s can’t.”

‘What a sophist,’ Ning Shu thought while she rolled her eyes.

“Just like mine. No amount of money could buy my life.”

Ning Shu: Heh…

He was really taking what she said and running with it, wasn’t he? Anyway, he was clearly suffering from an incurable, terminal disease.

Ning Shu had no easy way to get back to the city. Every option would come with its own complications.

She decided to take an unlicensed taxi. She had no other choice.

So what if she got ripped off? As long as she could arrive without trouble.

These kinds of rides were shady, sure, but still better than long-distance coaches that got checked at every toll gate.

Ning Shu didn’t want any unnecessary complications. The most important thing right now was the entrustor’s mother.

The unlicensed taxi driver turned out to be as shady as expected. He took her on a roundabout route and ended up costing her hundreds extra.

Internally, Ning Shu was cursing up a storm.

Still, she paid up—after all, it wasn’t her money.

Once they reached the bustling city, Ning Shu brought Gong Rong to stay at a small motel.

Gong Rong collapsed onto the bed and sighed. “Why aren’t we staying somewhere a bit nicer?”

“No way. Too many people here know who you are. I’m not about to blow my cover.”

Ning Shu dragged a chair over and sat across from Gong Rong. “Let’s be honest with each other. My only goal is to save my mother. If she lives, and your Gong family leaves me alone, I won’t harm you.”

Gong Rong lowered his eyes slightly. His long lashes cast shadows over his face. “Neither of us trusts each other. What’s the point in you saying all that?”

Ning Shu: Haha… I want to kill the hostage now, don’t stop me…

Just like Gong Rong said, Ning Shu didn’t trust the Gong family one bit.

Once Gong Rong went back, wouldn’t they come after her with everything they had?

She was on her own, and she also had the entrustor’s sick mother to take care of. Her situation looked hopeless from every angle.

The current situation was at a stalemate. She couldn’t send Gong Rong away, couldn’t keep him around, and definitely couldn’t let him die in her care.

Ning Shu really wanted to beat Gong Rong up. However, one look at that pale, weakened face and she hesitated.

She was honestly afraid that one punch might send him straight to the afterlife.

In an attempt to change the subject, she asked, “Why did you dress up as a woman?”

Gong Rong stretched lazily. “Take a guess.

“I’m going to shower.” Gong Rong headed into the bathroom but popped his head out shortly after, holding a lump of pink soap.

His expression was baffled as he asked, “Quick question: this bar of artificially scented, dyed soap—is it actually meant for bathing?”

Ning Shu nodded. “Have fun in there.”

“Can you get me something better?” Gong Rong asked her plainly.

Ning Shu shook her head. “You’re a hostage. Shouldn’t you have the mindset and awareness of a hostage? Is it really appropriate for you to be asking for nicer bath products?”

“It is,” Gong Rong replied, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

“The hell it is.”

“I can’t get used to this stuff. I might break out in a rash,” Gong Rong said. “What’s the difference between this and sulfuric acid?”

Ning Shu gave him a sideways glance. “Of course there’s a difference.”

“What’s the difference?”
