Chapter 465: Don’t Catch My Fur Babies
Chapter 465: Chapter 465: Don’t Catch My Fur Babies
From a distance, Glenn Zane watched Zephyr eating the meat, her heart aching at the cost.
’A single pound costs a fortune, and it’s just being fed to a bird!’
After Renee Jennings and Zephyr finished their respective breakfasts, they went out to the yard to find the "fur babies."
When the animals saw Zephyr, they all grew wary.
Blueberry bared his teeth, his meow turning into a fierce hiss. "The eagle’s back!"
Zephyr chirped angrily, "Get lost! You’re the eagle!"
"I’m not an eagle!" Blueberry retorted. "I’m a cat!"
"Well, I’m not an eagle either! Are you blind, you cat? Can’t you tell the difference between a falcon and an eagle?!"
"Who are you calling blind? Get down here if you’ve got the guts!"
"..."
Seeing the cat and the falcon arguing heatedly, Renee Jennings quickly stepped in to soothe them. "Alright, alright, stop fighting. Neither of you is an eagle."
Blueberry looked at her and asked curiously, "Renee, how do you know this guy?"
"We don’t really know each other," Renee Jennings explained. "Zephyr found me and asked me to tell you all that he’s not an eagle. He’s a peregrine falcon."
"’Pear-a-green’?" The furry faces of the pets were filled with confusion. "What’s a ’pear-a-green’?"
Renee Jennings gave them a quick lesson on peregrine falcons. "Like eagles, they’re birds of prey, but they’re a different group. It’s like how cats and tigers are both felines, but no one would call a house cat a tiger. Same principle."
The animals nodded, only half-understanding.
"Oh, so that’s how it is."
"I think I get it now!"
"..."
Renee Jennings said with a smile, "So next time you see him, don’t call him an eagle, okay?"
Blueberry snorted. "It would be better if he just didn’t come at all! He’s always coming here and scaring the cats and dogs!"
Hearing this, Renee turned to look at Zephyr. "Do you often come here to scare my fur babies?"
Zephyr immediately looked guilty. His eyes darted back and forth, and he didn’t say a word.
Renee Jennings frowned slightly, her tone growing serious. "Zephyr, can you hear me?"
For some reason, when Zephyr sensed the human’s displeasure, he suddenly became a little afraid of her anger. "I... I heard you..."
"Why do you come and scare them?" ’Zephyr might be trying to hunt them,’ Renee Jennings guessed internally. ’After all, that’s just the food chain.’
’Sometimes cats and dogs catch small birds, and sometimes birds of prey snatch cats and dogs.’
"Because... because... I was hungry." Zephyr’s reply was very quiet. "I keep failing to catch any doves..."
’Just as I thought.’ Renee Jennings felt a wave of retrospective fear. ’Thank goodness none of them were taken.’
She sighed. "Zephyr, if you’re hungry in the future, you can come to me. Just don’t hunt my fur babies."
"Okay," Zephyr agreed. "Are you really willing to feed me all the time?"
"Not all the time," Renee Jennings corrected him. "You’re a nationally protected species, so I can’t keep you as a pet. I mean you can come find me when you can’t catch any prey and you’re very hungry."
Zephyr seemed a little disappointed. "Oh, so that’s how it is."
’He actually thought being kept by a human would be great. To be honest, he was quite envious of this pack of cats and dogs. They never had to worry about food or water; all they did was play.’
"That’s right," Renee Jennings nodded.
"Alright then." Zephyr sighed. "Well... I’m leaving, then."
Renee Jennings: "Okay, goodbye."
Zephyr was displeased. "You... What’s with you, human? Aren’t you even going to try and make me stay?"
"Do I look like I want to get arrested?" Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow slightly. "You’re a protected species. I wouldn’t dare ask you to stay."
"Fine, fine." Zephyr drooped his head in disappointment. He shook his wings, gave a couple of flaps, and his body shot off the ground as if pulled by an invisible string. In an instant, he folded his wings and became a gray shadow.
Renee Jennings watched his form disappear into the clouds, then lowered her gaze to her fur babies. "Next time a falcon or an eagle is around, you have to hide and tell me."
If one of them got snatched, there’d be no going back.
The animals all nodded obediently.
The corners of Renee Jennings’s lips curled up. She turned, went inside, changed her clothes, and headed to the police station.
During her livestream yesterday, she had promised Hilary that she would go to Lyris to find Bonnie. First, she had to stop by the station to see if they needed her help with anything.
"Renee’s here!" Kyle Morgan, who was standing by the water cooler about to make himself a packet of instant coffee, was the first to spot her. "Oh, you brought us coffee? Then I don’t need to make this."
Hearing that, Renee Jennings’s brows lifted slightly. "Good thing I got here just in time, then."
She handed him the coffee carrier. "See if there’s anything you like."
Kyle Morgan chuckled and walked over. "That goes without saying. I’ll like whatever you buy."
"That’s good to hear," Renee Jennings laughed as well.
"Such a smooth-talker." Zachary Conway slung an arm around Kyle Morgan’s shoulders. "What about the things I buy? Do you like them?"
"Sure." Kyle Morgan shot him a look. "So, are you going to buy me anything? I’ve known you for so long, and I’ve never seen you treat me to a coffee."
"Haven’t I?" Zachary Conway feigned offense and gave him a light punch. "I think you just forget after you drink it."
"Where’s Sawyer?" Renee Jennings asked, noticing her seat was empty.
Levi Hollis said, "Sawyer took leave. She didn’t say why, just that it’s for a week."
"A week? That’s a long time." Renee Jennings frowned slightly. She sat down at a vacant desk and pulled out her phone to send Sawyer a message.
She put her phone down and said softly, "Are there any cases at the bureau I can help with? If not, I need to make a trip to Lyris."
"Going to look for Bonnie?" Zachary Conway asked.
"Yes," Renee Jennings nodded. "You watched the livestream too?"
"Yep." Zachary Conway broke into a brilliant smile. "I even sent you a gift."
Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow. "You shouldn’t have. I feel bad making you spend money."
"Don’t feel bad. This kid’s a total cheapskate," Levi Hollis said with a laugh, outing him. "The most he probably sent you were a few of those ’little hearts’."
"Oh, get lost," Zachary Conway said irritably. "I’m not that stingy, okay? I donated a lot."
Renee Jennings said with a smile, "Thank you, Kian Cole. I’ll treat you to dinner next time."
Hearing this, Zachary Conway actually got embarrassed. "No, no, that’s not necessary. Compared to other people, what I donated wasn’t actually that much."
"I insist," Renee Jennings said seriously. "No matter the amount, it’s the thought that counts."
"Oh, well..." Zachary Conway scratched his head, at a loss for what to say.
Kyle Morgan shot him a glare, then returned to Renee’s earlier question. "About cases... you’ll probably have to ask the chief."
Renee Jennings: "Is he in his office?"
"He is." Kyle Morgan nodded and handed her an iced Americano. "You can take this up to the chief for him."
"Alright." Renee Jennings took the coffee and went upstairs.
She knocked on the door, and a man’s deep voice quickly answered, "Come in."
"Henry Stark, are you busy?" Renee Jennings asked as she pushed the door open and walked in.
"You’re here." Henry Stark’s dark brows lifted slightly, his tone softening a bit. "And you brought me coffee?"
