Chapter 388: He’s Even Worse Than a Beast
Chapter 388: Chapter 388: He’s Even Worse Than a Beast
Renee Jennings glanced back toward Kaiser. "We need to talk to the park authorities and have them temporarily close it. Kaiser has to stay inside."
Henry Stark gave a slight nod and ordered calmly, "Kai and Sawyer, go coordinate with the park’s management. Levi and Kian Cole, you’ll be in charge of clearing the park."
Renee Jennings and Henry Stark walked to the park entrance. Her voice was heavy as she said, "He really is here to avenge his mate and young."
She paused, then continued, "He said he’s memorized the scents of those four people. He won’t let them get away."
"What did you say to him?" Henry Stark asked.
Renee Jennings looked up to meet his eyes. "I promised him I’d help find the other three."
At her words, Henry Stark raised a dark eyebrow. "And then?"
"And then..." Renee Jennings said, "let Kaiser bite them."
Henry Stark raised an eyebrow again. "Really?"
"Really." Renee Jennings nodded earnestly. "That’s my actual plan. Kaiser did nothing wrong, yet he lost his home and family. If I were him, I’d do the same thing."
"Understandable," Henry Stark said. "I agree with your plan."
"I appreciate that." Renee Jennings’s lips curled slightly.
Kyle Morgan and Sawyer had already finished coordinating with the park management, who agreed to close it temporarily.
As for the citizens who had been enjoying the cool air, strolling, playing chess, or dancing in the park, they had all fled the moment they heard there was a cobra inside.
All that was left was to send a drone in with food for Kaiser.
Renee Jennings scanned the area around the park entrance and spotted an old woman pushing a stroller, chatting animatedly with someone.
"That old woman’s son is one of them," she said.
Henry Stark’s dark eyes narrowed. His voice was deep as he said, "Let’s go have a word."
As the group approached, the man chatting with the old woman saw them, immediately fell silent, and stepped back a few paces.
"Old Man Zimmerman, where are you going?" The old woman was still looking confused when she heard someone speak from behind her.
"Ma’am, do you have a son who went hiking with Elias Yardley last week?" Zachary Conway asked.
The old woman turned her head and looked at them in confusion. "Yes, he did. Why are you asking, officers?"
"And where is your son now?"
"It’s Monday, so my son must be at work. He isn’t in any trouble, is he, officer?" the old woman asked uneasily.
"Don’t be nervous, ma’am. We just wanted to ask your son about the cobra incident," Zachary Conway explained.
Hearing this, the old woman finally let out a sigh of relief.
Kyle Morgan spoke up. "Ma’am, could we get your son’s contact information? We’d like to give him a call."
"Of course," the old woman agreed and recited a phone number.
Kyle Morgan confirmed the number with her and then dialed it.
The person on the other end picked up quickly. "Hello, who is this?"
Kyle Morgan: "Hello, this is the Municipal Criminal Investigation Division. Did you go hiking with Elias Yardley last week?"
"Yes, that’s right."
"Then are you aware that Elias Yardley was bitten by a cobra and died?"
The person on the other end fell silent for a moment, then asked in a trembling voice, "Is this some kind of joke?"
Kyle Morgan countered coolly, "Do you think we’d joke about something like this?"
The old woman’s face suddenly turned pale.
The person on the other end went silent again.
Kyle Morgan glanced at the child in the stroller. "Just a few moments ago, your child was nearly attacked by a cobra. One of our colleagues saved him."
The old woman quickly shouted into the phone, "Miles, it’s true!"
Hearing his mother’s voice, the fear welling up in Miles Shepherd’s heart instantly erupted. "Elias... Was Elias really killed by a cobra bite?"
Kyle Morgan’s tone was certain. "Correct. If you’re able, please come down to the station."
Miles Shepherd’s voice was heavy. "Okay... I’ll be there."
**
Levi Hollis and Sawyer went out to buy coffee, handing one to each person when they got back.
They had only gotten about three hours of sleep last night. Without coffee to keep them going, they’d never make it.
"Miles Shepherd’s here." Kyle Morgan put down his phone and stood up, jabbing a straw into his cup and taking several huge gulps of coffee.
Inside the interrogation room, Miles Shepherd, dressed in a button-down shirt and dress pants, repeatedly wiped the sweat from his forehead with a tissue.
"We just got carried away in the moment. We didn’t do it on purpose..." he explained.
Renee Jennings, sitting to Henry Stark’s right, shot him an icy glare at his words. "’Got carried away’? ’Not on purpose’? Do you have any idea that you destroyed a happy family?!"
"What?" Miles Shepherd, assuming she was talking about Elias Yardley, retorted, "That’s not it. Elias was the one who was most into it. Besides, he and his wife weren’t on good terms. They weren’t happy at all, okay?"
Renee Jennings: "..."
She took a deep breath, suppressing her rage. "I’m talking about Kaiser’s family!"
Miles Shepherd stared at her, an expression of sheer absurdity on his face. "Are you kidding me...?"
"Do you think this is a joke?" Disgust filled Renee Jennings’s eyes. "If I hadn’t been concerned about harming an innocent, I really should have let Kaiser bite your child today."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Miles Shepherd bristled.
Renee Jennings said coldly, "What, in your opinion, animals don’t deserve to have families? The eggs were safe in their nest, and the female cobra hadn’t done anything to you. What gave you the right to treat them that way?"
Miles Shepherd frowned, his face a mask of irritation. "They’re just a bunch of animals. Do you really have to make such a big deal out of it?"
"So it’s true. Human nature is fundamentally evil," Renee Jennings sneered, then got up and left the interrogation room.
Sawyer quickly came out another door to meet her. "Renee, calm down."
Renee Jennings looked at Sawyer and couldn’t help but vent, "Does he even realize he’s worse than an animal? This morning, I told Kaiser not to harm any innocents, and he told me that as long as humans don’t attack him, he won’t attack them first."
"You’re right. Some people don’t deserve to be called human," Sawyer agreed with a nod.
Back in the interrogation room, Henry Stark informed Miles Shepherd that Kaiser was likely out for revenge and wouldn’t let the matter rest.
Miles Shepherd said self-righteously, "Then you should just team up with the fire department and catch him! How can you let such a dangerous creature remain at large?"
Hearing this, Henry Stark’s deep, dark eyes sized up the man before him. He then said calmly, "Our nation’s laws cannot govern Kaiser’s behavior. However, as a citizen, your act of harming a wild animal is a violation of the law."
The color drained from Miles Shepherd’s face. "Officer, what’s that supposed to mean?"
Kyle Morgan chimed in with extreme casualness, "It means you broke the law. Don’t you understand?"
Miles Shepherd’s brows knitted tightly. "You’re not going after that venomous snake, but you’re going to arrest me? That’s ridiculous!"
Henry Stark said coolly, "Even as a venomous snake, he understands not to harm the innocent. And yet you, a human, can’t even grasp such a simple truth."
"You son of a..." Miles Shepherd swallowed his curse and forced a smile. "Officers, your priority is to protect the people first and wildlife second, right? If you let that venomous snake go around biting people, that would be a dereliction of duty!"
"Correct." A faint smile touched Henry Stark’s lips. "Protecting the people is our duty. But... are you one of them?"
