Chapter 1036: Chapter 1036: Stopped Relying On Her Sight.
Bai Xifeng had already attempted to use her standard spiritual sense to map out the entire area yesterday, and the result had been completely and utterly useless. Even her sharp spiritual sense had failed to detect the slightest trace of the creature’s physical existence or its spiritual energy fluctuations.
Bai Xifeng scratched her head in pure frustration as the relentless wind whipped her hair wildly around her face.
"If I can just manage to see that stupid thing even once..." Bai Xifeng’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, murderous slits. "I swear I will beat it up until it begs me for mercy."
Bai Xifeng continued moving swiftly through the dense forest, carried effortlessly by the wind rune beneath her feet. However, just as she was actively pondering her next tactical move, a sharp, searing pain suddenly erupted across her side.
Slash! Another invisible attack struck her cleanly.
"What?!" Bai Xifeng shouted toward the empty air, her voice echoing through the trees. "I thought you could not attack me while I was actively moving!"
As if responding directly to her complaint with mocking defiance, another attack immediately landed on her other side.
Slash!
"Fuck!"
Wasting no more time, Bai Xifeng subconsciously activated her large-scale defensive array. However, to her utter dismay, it was completely useless. The invisible attacks continued to rain down on her without a single moment of interruption.
Running no longer seemed effective either. The creature had apparently adapted to her tactics. It had learned how to predict her trajectory and attack her even while she was in full motion.
"You are actually learning and adapting?" Bai Xifeng’s expression became increasingly ugly.
This was incredibly bad news. A trial creature capable of learning and adapting was far more troublesome than a mindless, aggressive beast.
Seeing that the large defensive array was accomplishing absolutely nothing, Bai Xifeng made a snap decision and immediately shrank the formation. This time, she condensed the glowing barrier until it was only slightly larger than her own physical body, tight against her skin.
The exact moment she did so, the attacks suddenly stopped.
Bai Xifeng blinked in surprise. Then, she paused. Her brilliant mind rapidly replayed everything that had just happened from the moment she entered the floor. A second later, realization dawned on her like a flash of lightning.
"Wait..." Her eyes widened. "When I activated the array earlier, it covered a huge radius."
That meant the creature had already been trapped inside the perimeter of the defensive formation together with her! The array had protected her perfectly from outside threats, but it had done absolutely nothing to prevent something already inside the barrier from attacking her. Now that she had drastically reduced its size, the creature was pushed outside and could no longer enter.
"Ah!" Bai Xifeng grabbed her head in sheer exasperation. "How stupid am I?!"
She aggressively rubbed her hair until it became a complete, tangled mess. After finally solving that frustrating puzzle, Bai Xifeng stopped running altogether and decided to take a short, well-deserved break. She sat down cross-legged on the dirt. Then, she reached into her pouch, took out a high-grade Spirit Gathering Pill, and tossed it into her mouth.
The pill dissolved quickly on her tongue, rapidly replenishing her depleted spiritual energy. As she began circulating her cultivation technique to absorb the medicine, Bai Xifeng naturally closed her eyes. The very next second, she jumped upright like she had been electrocuted.
"What the fuck!" Bai Xifeng cursed out.
Bai Xifeng immediately opened her eyes again, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. To make absolutely sure she had not just imagined it, she carefully closed her eyes once more.
And there it was.
A dark, humanoid creature was standing directly outside her tight defensive array. Its appearance was blurry and shadow-like, as though it had been formed entirely from pure, living darkness. It held a long, wicked spear in its hands and was repeatedly striking her formation with terrifying strength.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
Bai Xifeng quickly opened her eyes again. Nothing. She saw absolutely nothing but empty trees. Then, she closed them. The creature instantly reappeared in her mind’s eye.
Bai Xifeng’s mouth slowly fell open as the sheer absurdity of the trick hit her.
"I really can’t see it with my physical eyes..." Then, a massive, triumphant grin spread across Bai Xifeng’s face. "I just need to keep them closed."
Teacher Ji’s cryptic clue finally made perfect sense. Something is not born to be seen by the eyes. The answer had been right in front of her the entire time. Or rather, it had been visible only when she stopped relying on her sight.
"Hahaha! So that’s what you meant, Teacher Ji!" Bai Xifeng burst into a loud, joyous laughter that echoed throughout the silent forest.
Now that she could actually see the creature, the entire dynamic of the situation immediately changed. She only needed to fight with her eyes closed. Simple.
Bai Xifeng closed her eyes once again, gripped her weapon, and prepared to rush forward. However, the scene that greeted her spiritual vision nearly made her curse aloud.
"Shit!" Bai Xifeng’s grin instantly froze on her face. "It can multiply?!"
The single shadow creature she had seen just a moment ago was no longer alone. Dozens of identical shadow creatures now completely surrounded her small defensive formation from every single direction.
Some carried long spears, others wielded massive swords, and a few even held sharp, curved blades. All of them were attacking her formation simultaneously.
Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang!
The continuous, heavy barrage shook her barrier relentlessly. Bai Xifeng finally understood why she had been receiving multiple wounds at the exact same time yesterday. There had never been only one single attacker. There had been an entire stealth army.
