SHEN JI YUN stared out the car window, watching the city pass by. He was in the backseat while his uncle and Uncle Yue sat up front. They were headed to a well-known luxury hotel for Luo Yan and Luo Jin's joint birthday party.
He fought back a yawn. After last night, he had barely slept. How could anyone sleep after his boyfriend's father found out about their relationship? Even now, Shen Ji Yun felt like his heart still wasn't beating right. Like at any moment, Uncle Wei Tian might appear and punch him out of nowhere.
It wasn't just that. He couldn't stop thinking about what if Uncle Wei Tian forced them to break up. The other had already told them to do exactly that last night. If he hadn't been sent home, Shen Ji Yun was sure that conversation would have gone that way. He didn't even know how he made it back home afterward. But when he finally walked into his room, it hit him. He was lucky, really lucky that Uncle Wei Tian had told him to leave. It showed that the other was still trying to think clearly instead of letting his anger take over. If he had done the opposite, Shen Ji Yun might not have only gotten beaten up, Luo Yan might already be on a plane to another country by now.
He really should be grateful that Uncle Wei Tian was a good father. Even in that situation, he still thought about how Luo Yan would feel. So Shen Ji Yun knew the other wouldn't actually lay a hand on him. It was just his own mind running wild, jumping to the worst probable outcomes.
Shen Ji Yun shook his head. He couldn't afford to keep thinking about last night. What mattered now was tomorrow's talk with Uncle Wei Tian. That thought pulled his mind back to early this morning, to the conversation he had with his uncle.

When Shen Ji Yun came down from his room, he found his uncle in the kitchen making coffee. The older man took one look at him and set down his mug.
"You look terrible," his uncle said. "Did you not get enough sleep because you're too excited about the party tonight?"
"I wish that was the reason," Shen Ji Yun said as he sat down on one of the bar stools.
The teasing look on his uncle's face vanished. "Did something happen?"
Shen Ji Yun sighed and told him everything. How Uncle Wei Tian had found out about their relationship after seeing them together outside the gate, how he had pulled them into the study and questioned them, and how he had eventually sent Shen Ji Yun home.
His uncle's expression grew serious. He gave Shen Ji Yun a long, searching look. "Was he angry?" He paused, then shook his head. "No, of course he was angry. Any father would be. I meant... did he try to hit you? Did he hurt you?"
"Yes, he was furious," Shen Ji Yun admitted. "But he didn't hit me or anything. Though I think he really wanted to."
Relief flickered across his uncle's face, though worry still lingered in his eyes. "What happens now? Do you and Xiao Yan have a plan?"
"Yan Yan called me after. Uncle Wei Tian wants us to come over tomorrow for a proper talk," Shen Ji Yun said. "He said to bring you along." He paused. "As for plans... I just want to make sure my relationship with Yan Yan doesn't get affected by any of this."
Shen Ji Yun was determined to do whatever it took to ensure his relationship with Luo Yan survived this. He would face Uncle Wei Tian with honesty, proving the depth of his love for Luo Yan.
His uncle was quiet for a moment. Then he let out a breath. "Well. I guess I'll be there, then. Do you want me to put in a good word for you? Tell Brother Luo how wonderful you are and how perfect you'd be for Xiao Yan?"
His uncle looked so serious when he asked that Shen Ji Yun had no doubt that the man would actually do it if he didn't say something now.
"No need. Just having you there will be enough." He didn't say that if his uncle actually did that, it might end up having the opposite effect.

"Are you nervous, Xiao Yun?"
Uncle Yue's voice brought Shen Ji Yun back to the present. He looked toward the front seat and found the older man watching him with a concerned expression.
"No, Uncle Yue. I'm fine," Shen Ji Yun said, offering a reassuring smile.
Shen Ji Yun could understand why Uncle Yue would ask. The other had overheard bits of the conversation he'd had with his uncle that morning. He had immediately asked how Shen Ji Yun and Luo Yan were doing. He had even offered to come along tomorrow, thinking that seeing him and Uncle Yi Mu together might show Uncle Wei Tian that a same-sex couple could be perfectly normal.
Shen Ji Yun was tempted to say yes, but he stopped himself. It felt a little too much like manipulation. He wanted to be the one to convince Uncle Wei Tian on his own. Besides, Uncle Wei Tian had only asked for him and his uncle to come. He didn't want to give the other any extra reason to be angry with him. So he politely turned down Uncle Yue's offer.
Jiang Yue nodded, though he still looked a little worried. He had met Luo Yan's father once, and the man had seemed decent. Still, he couldn't help but feel uneasy. He had been through something similar with Shen Yi Mu, after all. So he didn't want Shen Ji Yun and Luo Yan to end up going through the same struggles.
But with their society still being closed-minded about such relationships, that was probably too much to hope for. So Jiang Yue just hoped that Shen Ji Yun and Luo Yan would at least have the full support of their immediate families.
As he sat there worrying, the car finally pulled up to their destination.
