Even if she was only wore light makeup, she still had mild eye shadow and eyeliner. After crying, the dark color of her makeup had slightly stained his suit. Fortuitously, he had on a dark-colored suit, so it was not that obvious.
However, there was still a light marking on his shirt which was much easily spotted.
Yu Zi checked her reflection in the mirror and realized that the makeup around her eyes had begun to run. It was a little faded but still made it look like she had smoky makeup on.
Yan Huaian was a pretty blunt person, fortunately, he could not see much of a difference in Yu Zi. The faded, light circles of black around her eyes did not look bad to him. It made her eyes look bigger and as she had just cried, there were still sparkling tears in her eyes.
Her crying had also made her eyes and nose go red. Her trembling eyelashes moved his heart.
Not only did Yan Huaian find her pretty, but her sad petite frame made his heart ache for her as he felt the urge to shower her with love. The Yu Zi he was looking at right now had a delicateness to her, like a fragile flower by the roadside, trembling in the wind.
Though she may look weak and fragile, there was a strength that seemed to live inside her. While strong winds may try to blow her away, she refuses to give in however much she may be tumbling in the wind.
Yan Huaian could not help but imagine what Yu Zi would feel like in his arms, delicate and soft. Even her tears were warm, much like dainty little feathers tickling him on the chest. The tickles made his body burn up as he felt a blistering flame billowing in his abdomen.
He swallowed hard. As Yu Zi’s back faced him, he brazenly watched her with a passionate gaze. He made no attempt to hide the yearning in his eyes. He usually put on a gentle demeanor when facing Yu Zi, and only he knew how truly difficult it was for him to hold it all back. It felt terrible having to put up a façade every second of the day.
Yu Zi quickly wiped her eyes clean with some tissue. Her eyes felt fresher and cleaner. She put her compact mirror back into her handbag. She looked around in the car and saw that there was nowhere to put the rubbish in her hand, so she took a little plastic bag out of her handbag.
She had the habit of carrying little plastic bags on her wherever she went. It would be inconvenient if she wanted to throw some rubbish away but could not find a rubbish bin. She threw the tissues into the little plastic bag and wrapped it up properly before putting it back into her handbag.
Yan Huaian watched Yu Zi’s careful actions. He could not help but think that this woman that he had feelings for had a considerate heart.
Yu Zi now had the confidence to lift up her head to look at Yan Huaian. “Thank you so much for just now.”
“It’s nothing. I can’t stand by and watch you get bullied,” Yan Huaian smiled as he said.
Yu Zi shook her head. “It’s not just about that. You put your own reputation on the line claiming that you were courting me. You’ve taken a risk and people are going to misunderstand you.”
Luckily there were not many people who witnessed the drama that unfolded today. They would slowly forget about this once some time has passed.
Yan Huaian was an outstanding man. Unless he was not looking for a girlfriend, he would have no trouble getting one at all.
Yan Huaian gave a smile over Yu Zi’s words and did not give any explanation. He drove directly toward Autumn Garden.
It was quiet in the car. Yu Zi could not help remembering Yue Jingchen’s distrust of her.
She had no idea that after being together for six years, Yue Jingchen did not even have an ounce of trust in her. He had actually suspected she had gotten together with another man the moment they broke up. He distrusted her to the extent of accusing her of cheating on him while they were together and two-timing him with another man behind his back.
Yu Zi could not help but find it all slightly laughable. This was the man she had spent six years of her life with and had nearly even married him.
She did not even dare imagine what her life would be like if she had actually gotten married to Yue Jingchen. Putting the trouble that would be caused by Pan Yunfeng and Yue Xingan aside, issues would probably frequently arise in their relationship.
It would have been a marriage free of peace.
This was the reason why Yu Zi’s feelings and guilt toward Yue Jingchen was slowly fading away.
One needs to go through trials and tribulations with someone before truly knowing them.
If there were no struggles, and life passed by smoothly, there would many things left unseen in a person.
Yu Zi sighed. Only by letting things go did she realize that she had been trapped in her own thoughts and feelings. She did not say another word to Yan Huaian and the car became so silent that uneasiness began to fill the air.
Yu Zi cleared her throat and awkwardly turned to ask Yan Huaian “Why were you at our office? Did I interrupt your work?”
There were only some small companies in the building where the law firm was. From what she knew, Yan Hui was not in business with any of the companies there beside her law firm. They were the only ones that had a business contract with Yan Hui and Yan Huaian.
“No, you didn’t. I will pass by your law firm on the way home and I was thinking if you would get off from work on time. So, I dropped by. If you don’t need to work overtime, I can give you a lift and we can go home together since it is on the way,” said Yan Huaian.
He acted naturally when he said it. There was no sign of anything suggestive nor did he seem like he was hinting at anything. However, that last sentence still made Yu Zi blush.
His tone was lively yet the way he said it was completely inconspicuous. There was no hint of any suggestions to her.
Yu Zi thought to herself that perhaps she was overthinking things. He was behaving quite normally, and she was the one who had heard the words ‘go home together’ and started imagining they were living together. Her heart skipped a beat at the thought of that idea.
If Yan Huaian was not sitting right there, Yu Zi would have slapped herself for thinking such thoughts.
She had just broken off a relationship. What was she thinking about now?!
Yan Huaian had just given her help. Even though he had claimed to want to court her in front of Pan Yunfeng and Yue Jingchen, it was nothing more than to help her out of a tough situation. There was no way she could have any intentions with Yan Huaian.
Yu Zi lowered her head and secretly looked at Yan Huaian at the corner of her eye.
He was looking forward as he concentrated on the drive. The side of his face looked upright and proper, much like a true gentleman. Yu Zi suddenly had the feeling that her overthinking the situation was nothing but an insult to Yan Huaian.
Yan Huaian was a courteous man who did not seem to have a bad bone in his body.
He had a clean, pure look that made him seem not of this world. One should not defile him with a common man’s emotions and sensory pleasures. Yu Zi could hardly imagine what he looked like when overcome with passion.
She wondered how long she had been staring at him, which made her actions pretty transparent. Yan Huaian turned abruptly and caught her stare.
Yu Zi nearly choked as her face turned bright red.
She did not know how to explain herself and it did not seem logical to deny that she was staring at him. It made Yu Zi fluster with embarrassment.
She wanted to explain herself but did not know what to say. “I… I…”
She could not think of a logical excuse.
“What’s wrong?” Yan Huaian had intended to help her out by saying something caring, but he swallowed his words when he saw how flustered she was. A playful thought popped up in his mind as he suddenly wanted to see how shy and awkward she was.
His moist, thick lips curved up into a smirk as he lowered his voice. He sounded a little husky, even slightly magnetic as he asked gently, “Were you staring at me just now?”
Yu Zi shook her head in a fluster. She shook her head so hard, that she got a tad bit dizzy. She went into a panic. The more agitated she became, the more her mind came up blank with ideas. She could not think of any logical excuses for her actions.
“Did you see something on me?” Yan Huaian asked cheekily.
The slight laughter he gave out sounded as if his voice had a rhythm that made its way straight into her heart. It hooked onto her, tickling her heart as it made her heart beat faster.
Thump… Thump… Thump…
It felt like her heart was about to jump out of her chest. Yu Zi instinctively placed her hand on her chest, as if trying to stop her heart from jumping out of there.
Yan Huaian lowered his gaze slightly and managed to conceal the fact that her action had lit a fire inside of him. He could not stop his gaze from falling onto her hand… Which was now right on her chest. He gulped in nervousness.
He quickly looked ahead to focus on the road, thinking that he had fallen into her trap. He wanted to hit on the girl but ended up on the receiving end. Unfortunately, she was unwittingly hitting on him.
His hands gripped the steering wheel tighter and his fingers went pale.
It took a while before he could relax again.
He turned toward Yu Zi, who was still blushing. He could not allow himself to be the only one seduced in the situation. He narrowed his eyes to ask, “Why were you staring at me?”
His magnetic, husky voice seemed to linger in her chest, making it feel numb and weak.
Yu Zi could not describe that feeling as she replied in a stutter, “I… I didn’t…”
Yan Huaian gave out a soft laugh. His laugh sounded like jade bells, which surprised Yu Zi enough to forget her nervousness. She lifted her head to look at him.
His eyebrows were curved upwards, his vibrant, dark eyes looked as if they had stars in them. She wanted very much to reach out and touch his eyes.
However, she stopped herself from doing so and her hands gripped her knees tightly. She did not embarrass herself.
She frowned slightly as she wondered what was wrong with her. Why was she acting out so abnormally?
Yan Huaian thought that he had made her angry from all that teasing, so he immediately stopped laughing and stopped making fun of her.
“I’ll stop teasing you. Didn’t you say you had something to say to me?” Yan Huaian quickly said as his expression changed to one that looked extremely upright.
He was giving her a way out.
Yu Zi quickly latched onto the opportunity and nodded. However, she could not think of anything to say. In a moment of anxiousness, she said the first thing that came to mind.
“Come over to my house for dinner,” Yu Zi said. She immediately wondered how such a normal sentence could sound so suggestive.
However, Yan Huaian did not seem to read too much into him. He did not think that there was anything wrong with what she said as he acted casual about it.
It made Yu Zi feel like she was the one that was overthinking.
She started to wonder what was wrong with her. Why did she suddenly lose the ability to speak? She said something completely normal and ordinary. Yan Huaian did not read too much into it, yet she, on the other hand, had already begun imagining the most extreme of scenarios.
