Chapter 310 - He Did Not Know Why She Was Lying To Him
Chapter 310: He Did Not Know Why She Was Lying To Him
Could she have eaten all of it herself because he was outstation?
Thankfully, Zheng Yuntong finally remembered. “Oh yeah, the chocolate! I have them with me!”
She began to search for them in a panic. She remembered bringing them down just now, and she had even forgotten them at first in her panic. It was all thanks to Xu Moyan’s reminder that she brought them down at all.
Now, however, the paper bag that she should be holding had vanished. When Shen Zongyi kissed her, he had kissed half of her soul clean out, and she could barely remember half of what she should.
Finally, she found the crumpled paper bag lying at her feet. Only then did she remember that she did enter the car holding a bag with chocolates, but the way Shen Zongyi ambushed her as soon as she entered the car made her drop the bag in shock. Just like that, the bag fell from her loosened fingers.
She picked the bag up hurriedly and pulled out an intricate square box.
A week ago, when she decided that she would give Shen Zongyi handmade chocolates, she had bought this beautiful and delicate box online. It did not look any shabbier than the packaging on those brands where a few pieces of chocolate cost almost a thousand bucks.
“I made this myself.” Zheng Yuntong gave him the chocolates, feeling slightly excited and slightly nervous. “I did all of it myself, and I didn’t ask Moyan to help me at all, okay? She just guided me from a side. It’s not really sweet, so try one.”
Shen Zongyi opened the box. There were nine small square compartments inside, and there was an intricate little chocolate in each compartment. They came in all shapes and sizes, and the prettiest part about them was that each chocolate was decorated with delicate patterns made from chocolates of many other colors. This was not a pattern you could find in the market.
Shen Zongyi was a grown man, so he did not have the same awe and admiration toward these girly decorations, Still, he knew that something like this took a lot of time and effort, and it could not have been easy, especially for Zheng Yuntong.
He picked up a biscuit-shaped chocolate with an edge of lace drawn with white chocolate.
After a bite, he found that it was not very sweet and was instead slightly bitter. He did not like sweet things, but he could tolerate this. Besides, Zheng Yuntong made them herself, so Shen Zongyi was very supportive of her efforts. Somehow, he actually found it very tasty.
As for the half a piece left in his hand, he gave it to Zheng Yuntong.
Zheng Yuntong did not decline it either, eating the remaining half from Shen Zongyi’s hands.
“I haven’t eaten any of them yet.” Zheng Yuntong held the chocolate in her mouth, her eyes narrowing happily. “It’s tasty.”
Shen Zongyi laughed and looked at the time. “There’s still time for supper. This is our first Valentine’s Day together, so we have to make it count.”
Zheng Yuntong nodded profusely and let Shen Zongyi drive her away.
When they were driving out of the housing area, Zheng Yuntong saw a Cayenne drive in, but she did not get a good look at the license plate.
Nevertheless, many people drove Cayennes in B City, so Zheng Yuntong did not give it much thought. Still, because it was the same model as the car Wei Zilin drove, Zheng Yuntong turned to Shen Zongyi and asked, “Oh yeah, I saw a tabloid news report online that said the boss and Liang Wenyin showed up at the same hotel. The paparazzi even said the two of them are dating and celebrating Valentine’s Day together in G City.”
Shen Zongyi paused, quite stunned. “There was such a thing?”
“Yeah.” Zheng Yuntong nodded. “You’re driving now, so I’ll show you when we arrive.”
“Does Xu Moyan know about this?” Shen Zongyi asked.
“Yup. She was feeling really down after she saw the news. She looked really depressed—” Zheng Yuntong paused. Why did you ask about Moyan? Don’t tell me, do you know—”
“Do I know that she likes President Wei?” Shen Zongyi gave the corners of his mouth a twitch. “It isn’t hard to tell, to be honest.”
Zheng Yuntong took a sharp intake of breath, gripping her seatbelt tightly with both hands. “Don’t tell me the boss knows too?”
“I’m not sure about that. I never asked President Wei,” said Shen Zongyi.
When he saw that Zheng Yuntong was so nervous that she was about to call Xu Moyan and tell her about it, Shen Zongyi held her hands down. “If President Wei doesn’t know, telling her so abruptly will only make Xu Moyan overthink things, and that isn’t ideal. She’s upset enough as it is today.”
“That’s true.” Zheng Yuntong held her phone, her heart troubled and her brow furrowed in helplessness. “But what if the boss does know?”
Shen Zongyi reached out his hand to iron out the creases in her brow. “If President Wei does know, all the better. You know what he’s like. If a woman he doesn’t like has feelings for him, he’ll create a huge distance between them even if she doesn’t say it, so she can’t approach him. But the way I see it, he’s been getting along pretty well with Xu Moyan. If he’s doing that even though he knows she likes him, that might mean he likes her too.”
Zheng Yuntong’s eyes lit up. The headlights of the cars outside the window and the neon lights by the streets shone down on her face, illuminating her face with fleeting glows of brilliance.
“You’re right!” Zheng Yuntong put her phone away happily, letting go of the subject.
…
What Zheng Yuntong did not know was that the Cayenne she had seen at the entrance to the housing area was none other than Wei Zilin’s.
Presently, that Cayenne stopped in front of their apartment building. Wei Zilin raised his head to see the lights still on in Xu Moyan’s bedroom, and he hesitated.
He was not supposed to be back so soon, but Shen Zongyi kept harping on the date. He wanted to spend it with Zheng Yuntong.
As for Wei Zilin, it weighed on his mind as well.
He did not say anything on the surface. He just said that he knew Shen Zongyi just started dating, so he and Shen Zongyi worked together through the night, settling their business in G City as soon as they could so they could rush back here.
Shen Zongyi had not gone home, and to be honest, neither had he.
Right now, his luggage was in his truck. He was slightly later, partly because he wanted to avoid Shen Zongyi and Zheng Yuntong, and partly because he had cleaned himself up a bit, removing the newly-grown stubble.
He was not like Shen Zongyi. Shen Zongyi was already officially dating Zheng Yuntong, and anyone could tell at a glance that Zheng Yuntong was head over heels in love with Shen Zongyi.
However, Wei Zilin was not certain where he stood with Xu Moyan yet, so he wanted to present the best side of himself to her.
Right now, though, he was a little hesitant. He did not know if it was right to invite her out tonight.
Alighting from the car, he walked out of the car’s warmth, and the cold night air seemed all the harsher. It blew against his face, and his skin hurt as though it was being shaved with a razor.
Right now, Xu Moyan was sitting alone on her bed, staring blankly at Yu Linling’s Weibo. He had not updated his Weibo, and the post on the very top was still the picture of the food they had eaten at her place last time.
That was not too long ago, but that day felt so far away, and her happiness from back then was blurring now as well.
As she stared, a single tear dripped onto the phone screen.
Xu Moyan hurriedly wiped it away, and suddenly, the image on her screen changed. It began to ring, displaying Wei Zilin’s name.
Xu Moyan paused, stunned. This was his first time contacting her since he went outstation.
She was extremely nervous, staring blankly at the name on the phone and even forgetting to pick up. Eventually, the call rang on for too long and was automatically cut off.
It was too late by the time Xu Moyan recovered and tried to pick up. Her heart hurt horribly, and she wanted nothing more than to pull out all the hairs on her head.
She went to the call log and hesitated, wondering if she should call back.
Wei Zilin looked up at the well-lit bedroom and frowned slightly, calling her again.
Xu Moyan’s hand shook as though the phone burned her, and she nearly dropped it.
Rubbing away the tears on her face quickly, she sniffled a little and cleared her throat. Once she was sure she sounded decently normal, she finally picked up.
“Hello.” Xu Moyan took the call, but she did not sound particularly happy.
She did not know what Wei Zilin was going to say when he called her on this day, at this time.
Shen Zongyi was back now, so Wei Zilin should be in B City too.
“No one picked up earlier. Are you busy?” Wei Zilin’s warm and clear voice seemed to cut through the cold air, seeping in gently.
Hearing his voice again, she realized that it was just as pleasant as warm before, like a summer breeze enveloping her heart.
However, she could not help but remember the pictures in the report, and she choked for a bit before saying, “No, I was in the kitchen, but I left my phone in the bedroom. By the time I heard the call and rushed over, you’d already hung up.”
Wei Zilin put one hand into his coat pocket, frowning slightly. He looked up to confirm where the kitchen was, and he was sure that the lights had not been on since he arrived here.
He did not know she was lying to him.
“You don’t sound very good. Did you catch a cold?” Wei Zilin asked.
His words of concern assaulted her with warmth, but the warmer she felt, the more her heart twisted in her chest.
‘Wei Zilin, if you don’t like me, don’t be so gentle to me anymore. I’d rather like you without any hopes of something more.’
