Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
On the path leading from the outhouse to the meditation hall, one had to pass through a small plum orchard.
As Xuanyuan Xi carried little Xiao Xuan along the narrow stone-paved path winding through the orchard, he unexpectedly encountered a young lady dressed in a pink cloak, her face partially concealed by a veil.
The cobblestone path was just that narrow.
Xuanyuan Xi deliberately stepped aside to give her room.
Unexpectedly, the other party was also yielding, and they both moved in the same direction.
Xuanyuan Xi hastily shifted further to the right.
By coincidence, she had the same thought and moved the same way.
After a few back-and-forth adjustments, it became impossible for them to pass each other.
Xuanyuan Xi finally decided to turn slightly to the side and said, “Please, young miss!”
The young lady inclined her body slightly in acknowledgment, expressing her thanks.
Then she turned and continued walking forward along the path.
As they brushed past each other, little Xiao Xuan, almost as if guided by some mischievous impulse, reached out his tiny hand and plucked the beaded flower from her attire.
Xuanyuan Xi: “…”
“Sorry.” Xuanyuan Xi immediately apologized to the young lady, then looked down at the little one in his arms and said, “Xuan’er, give it back to her.”
Little Xiao Xuan refused to return it.
The young lady said gently, “It’s all right, it’s just a pearl ornament, it’s not worth much.”
Xuanyuan Xi replied firmly, “Even so, it won’t do. If this spreads, it could damage your reputation, young miss.”
But no matter how he tried to reason, little Xiao Xuan still refused to hand it back.
Xiao Xuan was physically weak, and Xuanyuan Xi dared not force him or let him cry, fearing he might faint from the effort.
In the end, under Xuanyuan Xi’s insistence, he bought the pearl ornament from the other party for twenty taels of silver.
Once back in the meditation hall, he did not hide anything, recounting every detail of what had happened in the garden.
Xiao Heng fixed his gaze sternly on his youngest son.
Little Xiao Xuan shuddered in fright, and as if seeking help, he threw himself into Shangguan Qing’s arms.
If you said he was foolish he was not really foolish, because he knew that barging into his mother’s arms after causing trouble was useless, since Mother would definitely side with Father, and only his eldest uncle was reliable.
Shangguan Qing protected the little one in his arms and gently coaxed him, “All right, all right, Xuan’er, don’t be afraid, Uncle’s got you covered.”
Xiao Heng said, “Your new firelance is gone.”
Shangguan Qing immediately handed little Xiao Xuan back out and said solemnly to Xiao Heng, “Your own son, you discipline him yourself!”
Little Xiao Xuan: “…”
Xiao Heng took his son to the neighboring meditation hall.
Mistakes that needed correcting had to be corrected, but he had a principle, which was that he would never reprimand a child in front of others.
A quarter of an hour later, the father and son came back from the adjacent meditation hall.
No one knew exactly what Xiao Heng had said to little Xiao Xuan, but in any case, little Xiao Xuan obediently returned the pearl hair ornament to Xuanyuan Xi.
Xuanyuan Xi: No, wait, why are you giving this to me?
Xuanyuan Xi did not want it either.
Those sorts of “talented scholar meets beautiful lady by chance and fate sparks” scenarios simply did not produce any chemical reaction in Xuanyuan Xi at all; he thought that pearl ornament was ugly, and casually tossed it away the moment he turned around.
……
On the way back, Xiao Heng rarely chose not to sit in a carriage, instead riding a horse together with Xuanyuan Xi.
Xuanyuan Xi glanced at his bad brother-in-law beside him and said, “The wind is this strong, if you get blown apart I’m not responsible.”
Xiao Heng was not that frail, he simply did not practice martial arts, but in private he did quietly exercise his body as well.
Still, the fact that Xiao Heng gave up the chance to be close with his wife in order to ride with Xuanyuan Xi made it obvious that he had something he wanted to say.
“So what exactly is it?” Xuanyuan Xi asked.
Xiao Heng hesitated for a moment; this sort of thing was inconvenient for JiaoJiao to bring up, so it fell to him to worry about it himself.
He paused, urged his horse a little closer to Xuanyuan Xi’s, and asked casually, “When you were in the military camp… you didn’t mess around with anyone, did you?”
“Mess around with what?” Xuanyuan Xi did not understand.
Xiao Heng thought of the earlier pearl ornament incident and said, “You’ve grown up now, and many sons of noble families already understand matters between men and women at your age, but I don’t agree with that approach.”
Xuanyuan Xi half-guessed and half-inferred, and when he combined it with Xiao Heng’s somewhat indescribable expression, he finally understood what he was talking about.
Xuanyuan Xi’s small face darkened. “Bad brother-in-law, what are you saying? How old do you think I am!”
So he really did understand.
Before going to the military camp he had still been a simple child, but after mixing with those old soldiers for a year, he had picked up quite a bit of knowledge.
Children truly grew up far too quickly, and in the blink of an eye they were already half an adult.
Xiao Heng suppressed the emotions filling his chest and admonished him earnestly, “You must cherish your own body, and absolutely must not act recklessly.”
I haven’t even thought about that kind of thing at all, okay!
Xuanyuan Xi was still a baby at heart.
But he would never admit it, because little men were probably all like this.
No matter how childish they were inside, on the surface they always had to pretend to be mature.
He lifted his chin and snorted lightly. “Instead of worrying about me, you should worry about yourself.”
Xiao Heng asked, “What’s wrong with me?”
Xuanyuan Xi raised his brows and said, “I heard that some Prime Minister Liu has appeared in the State of Wei, someone from a lower state with a lowly background, so don’t blame me for not reminding you, JiaoJiao once had a close friend back in the State of Zhao whose surname was Liu as well, and his name was Liu Yisheng!”
……
Last night he had carried Jing Kong on his back, and with his waist and back already aching and sore, he had then spent the entire day today taking the children to offer incense without rest, so Gu Jiao, feeling considerate toward her own husband, consciously put two boxes of the little Dudu back into the drawer.
Who could have known that her husband, possessed of some inexplicable burst of backbone from nowhere, would actually walk straight over on his own initiative, open the little medicine chest, and take out again the little Dudu that she had just put back.
One box, two boxes, three boxes.
That’s right, he even domineeringly added one more box.
Gu Jiao: “…”
Do you have some kind of misunderstanding about your own stamina and duration?
The two of them then spent an indescribable yet enchanting night together, the sounds and movement only finally stopping at dawn.
And so the couple who were originally supposed to go pay a New Year visit to the Duke Estate on the second day of the Lunar New Year simply could not get up no matter what this time.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
