“Liu… what?” Gu Jiao asked.

Shangguan Yan shook his head and said, “Regarding this prime minister of the State of Wei, I do not know very much; I only know that his surname is Liu, that he came from a humble background, and that he seems to have originated from a lower state, and that through a chance encounter he met the King of Wei, who likewise had an unsatisfactory origin, and perhaps because they shared similar misfortunes they felt an immediate rapport upon first meeting, after which he entered the King of Wei’s service, rising gradually from an inconspicuous minor strategist to become the most formidable and trusted think tank at the King of Wei’s side.”

Gu Jiao, however, focused her attention on the words “humble background” and “lower state.”

“Lower state…” She murmured thoughtfully.

Could it be him?

While she was lost in thought, five-year-old Xiao Yan came running over drenched in sweat, dragging her younger brother along with her.

The dragon-and-phoenix twins had grown exquisitely delicate, bright-eyed and fair-skinned, and when they smiled there were even a pair of small dimples on their cheeks, making them irresistibly adorable.

Xiao Yan lifted her chubby, baby-fat face and said with a beaming smile, “Imperial Grandmother, Mother, Cong’er wants to play on the sled!”

The quiet little handsome boy Xiao Cong darkened his face in speechless resignation. It's obviously you who wanted to play, isn’t it?

Who would like such a childish thing anyway?

“Go and play.” Gu Jiao said.

Xiao Yan happily tugged Xiao Cong away.

Xiao Cong, who had merely been reduced to a tool from beginning to end:“…”

The imperial palace of the State of Yan was enormous, and in order to let the two little ones play to their hearts’ content, Shangguan Yan did not hesitate to demolish an entire garden and two palace buildings, constructing a super-sized ski field near the imperial garden.

The palace servants brought over small snow sleds personally made by Xiao Heng, and Xiao Yan twisted her little bottom and eagerly plopped herself down on one of them.

“What are you standing around for? Get on, little brother!” She called out, as she especially liked addressing Xiao Cong as little brother.

But in fact, Xiao Cong had never considered himself a younger brother.

Originally, he should have been the one born first, but this girl had kicked him aside and snatched the lead from him.

So he was actually the elder brother!

Xiao Yan spread her hands and lifted her brows, saying, “You’re not scared, are you?”

“Humph.” Xiao Cong replied, expressionless as he sat down.

The front seat had been claimed by Xiao Yan.

He sat behind her.

Without making a sound, he pinched the corner of Xiao Yan’s clothes.

Xiao Yan gripped the little reins tightly and said with swaggering confidence, “You didn’t secretly grab my clothes again, did you?”

Xiao Cong stiffened slightly, then said in a perfectly calm tone, “I’m afraid you’ll fall off.”

Xiao Yan patted her small chest and said crisply, “It’s fine even if you’re scared! You’re the little brother, after all, big sister’s got you covered!”

Xiao Cong said, “Don’t copy how Uncle talks.”

Xiao Yan gave a mischievous grin and said, “Sit, tight——”

It was just a sled pulled by a few palace servants, and it wasn’t even that fast, so who wouldn’t be able to sit steadily——

Just as Xiao Cong finished grumbling in his heart, he saw a black horse charge over like lightning, clamp its teeth around the sled’s rope, and dash off with a whoosh!

Xiao Cong’s little face turned deathly pale!

Why did it have to be Little Eleven???

There was no time to jump off, and no time to call for help either; Little Eleven was running far too fast, and the moment Xiao Cong opened his mouth the wind blasted straight in, turning him into a tiny, sorrowful frog.

Little Eleven only stopped after running three full laps, by which time the twins’ hair had all been blown into wild, spiky chaos, while Xiao Yan clapped her little hands excitedly and shouted, “Again! Again!”

Xiao Cong calmly climbed down from the small sled, covered his little chest with one hand, maintained a cool and aloof expression, then dropped to his knees in the snow with both knees and vomited with a retch.

On the other side, Xuanyuan Xi finally saw the JiaoJiao he had been longing for.

Over all these years, everything had changed, yet only JiaoJiao, in his eyes, remained exactly as she had always been.

Gu Jiao was wearing a light cyan plain-brocade cloak, the edge of the hood trimmed with a circle of snow-white fur, and as the breeze passed, the fur swayed gently, further setting off her jade-like skin and ethereal beauty.

“JiaoJiao!”

Unable to hide the excitement in his heart, he called out her name loudly.

Hearing this, Gu Jiao immediately turned her head and, across the lotus pond frozen solid with ice, saw the dust-worn youth who had just returned.

A flicker of delight swept through her eyes, and the corners of her lips curved as she said, “Jing Kong.”

Xuanyuan Xi activated his qinggong and leapt into the air, wanting to give JiaoJiao a handsome and dashing silhouette so that she would be utterly immersed in his charm and unable to pull herself away.

At the same time, he also wanted to prove to JiaoJiao that he was no longer the little monk who used to trip and fall everywhere.

All the palace maids screamed.

Heavens above, with such a beautiful young man descending from the sky, what young lady could possibly withstand it?

Gu Jiao, too, watched the youth flying toward her through the air with a smile.

Just as he was about to land, a crisp, childlike little demonic voice suddenly rang out from not far away, calling, “Uncle Jing Kong!”

“Urk!”

Xuanyuan Xi’s breath hitched, his body stiffened, and with a clatter he fell straight down from midair!

Not too near and not too far, neither off nor to the side, he landed squarely right in front of Gu Jiao.

His handsome face hit the ground first, and he ended up sprawled out flat like a great horse.

Gu Jiao: “…”

Shangguan Yan: “…”

All the palace maids: “…”

The culprit, Xiao Yan, came pattering over, squatted beside Uncle Jing Kong, and tilted her head as she curiously examined him.

Three seconds later, she perfectly copied Uncle Jing Kong’s exact pose, burying her face into the snow and arranging herself into a tiny version of the great horse sprawl.

Everyone once again: “…”

Having finally managed to show off once, only to end up falling like a toad, Xuanyuan Xi wished he could die on the spot just once.

He clenched his fists, gritted his teeth, and endured five seconds of utter social death before rising calmly from the snow, and then he saw the little bean who had imitated him.

The young man’s body trembled.

No way!

Had he really fallen that ugly?

He really, really wanted to die one more time…

Gu Jiao burst into laughter.

Watching her laugh until she could barely catch her breath, Xuanyuan Xi scratched his head.

All right then, if it could make JiaoJiao happy, even falling in the ugliest way imaginable was worth it.

Xiao Yan was extremely professional, and since no one came to haul her up, she continued to maintain her “fainted from the fall” pose without moving.

Shangguan Yan was both annoyed and amused as she said, “Get up!”

In the end, it was Xuanyuan Xi who lifted her up.

He himself did not even notice that the way he picked Xiao Yan up was exactly the same as how Xiao Heng used to pick him up in the past.

“Uncle Jing Kong, I missed you so much! You’ve become even more handsome again!”

The way Xiao Yan blew rainbow compliments was also exactly the same as when he himself had been a child.

Family was truly a pair of wonderfully magical words.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
