Long Yi arrived at the village only after Xiao Ji and Princess Xinyang had already departed with their group.

The old woman’s small thatched hut was the closest to the cave entrance, so he went to her first, and because he had stayed by Princess Xinyang’s side for many years, he was so familiar with Princess Xinyang’s presence that he could recognize it instantly.

The moment he stepped inside the hut, he knew that she had been there.

He asked the old woman where they had gone.

He wore a mask, and his eyes alone radiated an overwhelming murderous intent.

Mengmeng looked extremely fierce!

One had better tell the truth!

Otherwise, he will kill you!

The old woman was successfully intimidated; she raised her hand and pointed toward the slope behind the courtyard.

She said that they had left from there.

Xiao Ji had not told the old woman where exactly they were going, partly because he did not wish to involve her in any trouble, and also because he feared that, just in case, she might be forced to betray them.

Protection was one thing, but trust was another entirely.

If he failed to consider every possibility with meticulous care, he would not have survived until now.

Afterward, Long Yi went to the back mountain and followed the faint traces until he arrived at the residence where the young master had once lived.

As a martial artist, his senses were far sharper than those of ordinary people, and he sensed someone breathing inside the chest almost immediately.

He lifted the lid of the chest and saw two men whose hands and feet had been bound and whose mouths had been gagged.

The two of them had already awakened long ago, but unfortunately they were unable to move and unable to speak.

Now that someone had finally come, they could not help feeling extremely excited.

Long Yi glanced between them and pulled the cloth from the mouth of the younger man who looked more pleasing to the eye, then asked, “Who did this to you?”

The young man hurried to complain, saying that it had been a man and a woman, that they had worn the uniforms of Dongyi soldiers, yet their accents clearly did not sound like those of Dongyi people.

Hold on, your accent does not sound like that of a Dongyi person either.

“Where did they go?” Long Yi pressed a hand around his throat.

The young man shuddered and stammered, “They… they… went to the Holy Maiden Hall…”

He had personally heard the two of them disguising themselves as him and his servant and being escorted by the Dongyi King’s guards onto a carriage, so it should indeed be that they were headed for the Holy MaidenHall.

“Where is the Holy Maiden Hall?” Long Yi asked again.

The young man trembled as he spoke, “I… I have never been there…”

He truly had never been there.

The Holy Maiden Hall was the most sacred and mysterious place of the entire Dongyi Tribe, a place where outsiders could not get close at all, and if it had not been for his good looks and his exceptionally fortunate birth characters, he would never have had the chance to be chosen for the marriage ceremony with the Holy Maiden.

Yet no one could have expected that halfway along the journey someone else would intercept everything.

Once Long Yi confirmed that he could not extract any further information, he struck both men unconscious with a single handchop, closed the chest lid, and walked away.

Following the wheel tracks and footprints in the snow, he arrived near the village entrance, and just as he was passing beneath a large tree, he heard a teasing little voice from above his head asking, “Big guy, are you going to the Holy Maiden Hall?”

He looked up, his gaze filled with confusion, and saw the Dongyi Princess sitting on the tree branch.

The Dongyi Princess leapt down lightly, looking at him with spirited curiosity, and said, “I know the way to the Holy Maiden Hall.”

Long Yi glanced at her and spoke succinctly, “Lead the way.”

The Dongyi Princess froze for a moment, then asked, “You are not going to ask whether I am telling the truth? And you are not going to ask why I am helping you?”

“Lead the way.” Long Yi repeated, still using only those two words.

The Dongyi Princess pouted. “I am not doing it.”

Long Yi walked away.

The Dongyi Princess widened her almond eyes at his retreating back, and stammered, “I… I… I said I am not leading the way!”

And yet she still followed him.

……

The Holy Maiden Hall was a divine temple located on Dongyi Mountain, a place sacred to the Dongyi people.

Of course, that was only from the perspective of the Dongyi Tribe.

In the eyes of Xiao Ji and Princess Xinyang, it was an extremely ordinary palace, not even the type that could be considered especially magnificent or exceptionally crafted.

However, the atmosphere inside the palace was undeniably mysterious.

Inside this place there were only women and not a single man, and each of them wore the same cold, expressionless look, appearing as though they were untouched by the ordinary world.

Furthermore, incense burned everywhere throughout the palace. It burned by the entrance, it burned throughout the corridors, and even after one stepped into a room, the first thing that entered the line of sight was still the two large incense burners at the front.

“Achoo.”

Princess Xinyang’s nose tickled, and she let out a small sneeze.

The woman in red frowned and looked over at her.

Xiao Ji spoke calmly and asked, “When may I see the Holy Maiden?”

The woman in red had her attention successfully drawn away; her gaze shifted from Princess Xinyang’s face to the veil covering Xiao Ji’s features as she replied, “According to the rules, you may only see the Holy Maiden on the day of the wedding, which is three days from now, and if the Holy Maiden wishes to meet you before then, she will come to you of her own accord.”

It seemed these people neither recognized the young man’s voice nor had they seen his face before.

Forget it, he should not reveal his appearance so easily.

“May I go inside and rest?” He asked, his tone neither courteous nor discourteous.

“Yes.” The woman in red replied.

Xiao Ji walked into the side chamber with Princess Xinyang following behind him, but just as he entered, Princess Xinyang was blocked outside.

“What are you trying to do?” His voice turned cold as he asked the question.

The woman in red had clearly not expected the young man’s presence to carry such overpowering authority, and her voice almost faltered under the pressure.

Was he not supposed to be a poor guy from the countryside?

He had only been called the most handsome man of the Dongyi Tribe because of his exceptionally striking looks, and aside from that, he was said to have no particular ability. The Holy Maiden had chosen him solely because his looks and birth horoscope matched the necessary requirements.

Why, then, did the person standing in front of her feel so entirely different from the rumors?

But her suspicion remained just that, suspicion. It did not escalate into doubting whether he was an impostor, for after all, he had been sent here personally by the Dongyi King.

She bowed slightly and said, “The rules of the Holy Maiden Hall forbid any outside man from remaining inside the inner hall. He must follow me to the outer hall.”

Xiao Ji replied with a natural and commanding authority, “He is my personal attendant. I am accustomed to having him serve by my side, so he must remain.”

As the foremost Martial Marquis of the State of Zhao, there was no one who could surpass him in terms of aura and presence, and he did not need to raise his voice to intimidate; even his lightest tone carried an oppressive weight that ordinary people could not resist.

The scalp of the woman in red tingled, but she forced herself to remain steady as she said, “I will go report to the Holy Maiden, and if she disagrees, then he will still have to leave.”

But clearly she had already been overwhelmed by Xiao Ji’s presence, because for now she did leave them together.

The two entered the room.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
