Princess Xinyang was immediately so startled that a cold sweat broke out all over her body.

The terrifying feeling of doing something wrong and then turning around only to be caught red-handed was truly overwhelming.

The elderly woman looked to be around sixty or seventy years old, with graying hair and an extremely aged appearance, and judging from her clothing and manner of dress, she seemed to be a Dongyi person. Her garments were patched, so she was most likely a villager living nearby.

Marquis Xuanping kept his gaze locked with the old woman’s eyes, and while his expression did not betray any emotion, he quietly said to Princess Xinyang, “We have entered the territory of the Dongyi people, so we must proceed with utmost caution.”

Princess Xinyang lowered her voice and murmured an acknowledgment, then asked, “What do you plan to do?”

Marquis Xuanping replied, “We will act according to the situation.”

If the person who had appeared had been a soldier, Marquis Xuanping would have killed him without hesitation to silence him; however, the one standing before them was merely an ordinary villager.

The soldiers of the State of Zhao did not kill common people of an enemy nation.

Marquis Xuanping placed Princess Xinyang behind him to shield her, then held her hand and walked toward the elderly woman.

“Elder.” He said calmly, “We are passing soldiers who are tracking several people from the State of Zhao. Have you seen them?”

The language of the Dongyi Tribe was largely similar to that of the State of Zhao, with only differences in accent, and he spoke in a fluent Dongyi accent that left Princess Xinyang behind him utterly stunned.

Princess Xinyang understood a little of the State of Yan language and the State of Liang language, but those were on paper only, and although she could translate texts, if she had to speak them, her accent would certainly not be considered standard.

Xiao Heng had possessed an exceptional talent for languages since childhood, and Princess Xinyang had always believed it to be her own influence, but seeing this now, it seemed he had inherited it from Xiao Ji.

The old woman’s calm and dull gaze did not change much, and she slowly answered in her old and fragile voice, “Oh, I have not seen them.”

“Elder, do you live nearby? Do you have any family members at home?” Marquis Xuanping continued to ask.

“No one, just me alone.” The old woman spoke so slowly that people might feel that even speaking was a strenuous effort for her, and her reactions seemed sluggish.

But considering her age, this was nothing surprising.

Princess Xinyang secretly poked out half her head from behind Marquis Xuanping to observe the woman.

Marquis Xuanping turned around just in time to see the top of her black hair peeking out, and the corner of his lips curled with amusement.

“Elder.” He looked at the old woman again, “It is getting late. May we rest at your house for the night?”

“Alright.” The old woman replied sluggishly, then leaned on her cane as she slowly turned and walked away.

Princess Xinyang watched the gradually departing, stooped figure of the old woman and asked, “Are we really going to her house?”

Marquis Xuanping looked around and said, “There is nowhere else to stay here. Going to her home at least ensures we will not freeze to death, and at the same time, we can also inquire about the whereabouts of the Dongyi soldiers.”

Princess Xinyang thought about it and found that it made sense.

Who would have expected that they would accidentally wander into the territory of the Dongyi people?

They were unfamiliar with the terrain, and Xiao Ji was heavily injured; instead of aimlessly wandering through the icy wilderness, it was better to find a place to recover first.

Thinking of something, she asked again, “Do you think she actually saw what happened just now?”

Marquis Xuanping pondered and said, “Not quite sure.”

Princess Xinyang sighed and said, “Forget it. Even if she did see, so what? Are we really going to harm a helpless elderly woman? Let’s just follow her and keep an eye on her so she cannot report us.”

The two of them followed the old woman to a simple and shabby little hut.

The elderly woman lived in a relatively isolated spot, and only a little more than a hundred steps further east was a sparsely scattered village.

Seeing Princess Xinyang’s confused expression, Xiao Ji explained in a low voice, “In the Dongyi tribe, elderly people who have no children, no husband, and no family are relocated outside the village, because they are regarded as omens of misfortune.”

Princess Xinyang immediately understood. “So that’s how it is. It seems she did not lie to us, and she truly lives alone.”

Because the elderly woman was advanced in age and her movements were inconvenient, her living conditions were not secure, and her home was not particularly clean or well kept.

She pointed toward a small, dust-covered room and said to the two of them, “You will stay here tonight. Food is in the kitchen shed.”

After saying that, she returned to her own room and no longer paid attention to the two strangers.

Xiao Ji’s injuries were extremely severe, and once he entered the room, he could no longer maintain the calm composure he had shown earlier; his face turned pale, and he sat down on the dusty wooden stool.

From the moment they had stepped out of the rocky cave, they had been met with one incident after another, and only now did Princess Xinyang finally have the opportunity to properly take a serious look at him.

Only after taking a proper look did she finally realize how terrible his condition truly was.

No wonder he refused to let her light a flame stick in the cave earlier, because if she had known at that time that his complexion had turned this awful, she would have insisted on leaving him there to rest while she went ahead to scout the path alone.

But upon second thought, if she had truly gone by herself, she would have already been captured by the Dongyi soldiers at the mouth of the cave.

How could he always think so thoroughly on her behalf?

Princess Xinyang was deeply moved, and she completely forgot how his sharp tongue had driven her mad inside the cave. She instinctively raised her hand and touched his forehead. “So hot!”

Xiao Ji removed her hand and held it tightly in his own without saying a single word.

The room gradually settled into silence.

Princess Xinyang felt the warmth from his palm, and he refused to let go of her hand, his thumb unconsciously brushing lightly across the back of her hand.

It felt like a silent form of comfort.

……

Princess Xinyang tidied up the room a little, then took some quilts and bedding from a cabinet. Fortunately, these two items were clean, although they carried a slight hint of dampness.

Princess Xinyang then went to ask the elderly lady to lend her a charcoal brazier, after which she squatted down with her flame stick and began trying to light it on the ground.

She tried for a long time and still failed, and in the process she managed to turn herself into a soot-covered little cat.

Xiao Ji, pale-faced and sitting on the stool, looked at her with an expression that was almost a smile. “Qin Fengwen, is this your first time doing something like this?”

“So what if it is?” Princess Xinyang muttered. “I saw JiaoJiao start a fire very quickly, and she did it like this.”

Xiao Ji let out a laugh, but the pain immediately shot through his wounds as though they were splitting open again.

He steadied his breathing, stopped smiling with his lips, yet the amusement in his eyes was so overflowing it was almost visible.

He said, “I will do it.”

“You sit down and do not move!” Princess Xinyang ordered coldly.

Xiao Ji obediently sat back down without protest.

Princess Xinyang continued struggling to start the fire, and in the end, after sacrificing a small piece of her bangs, she finally managed to get the fire going.

She began drying the slightly damp bedding.

But ended up burning the bedding…

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
