“Little princess!”

From outside the tent came the guard’s voice.

“Make way! I want to see the Marquis!”

The young princess of the Dongyi Tribe spoke with her usual willful arrogance.

Princess Xinyang glanced at Xiao Ji, and Xiao Ji calmly took the towel and the wound ointment from her hand, slowly wiping away the droplets of water before he began to apply the ointment to her.

“This…” Princess Xinyang opened her mouth and said, “She’s coming in.”

“She cannot come in.” Xiao Ji said in an indifferent tone, dipping his fingertips into the ointment and evenly spreading it over her frostbite; the ointment’s medicinal effect was excellent, but the downside was that its color was ugly and its texture extremely sticky, and once it clung to the skin it was very difficult to wash away.

Princess Xinyang’s fingertips were delicate, and she loved cleanliness, so if she really tried to scrub it off, she would probably scrape off a layer of skin.

Very quickly, from outside the tent came the sound of the Dongyi princess stamping her feet and shouting in a spoiled voice, “You dare stop me! You must be tired of living! When the Marquis comes out later, I will have him deal with all of you!”

Princess Xinyang looked at Xiao Ji without making it obvious, and Xiao Ji continued applying the medicine with great focus, though he seemed to sense her doubt and scrutiny, and he said calmly, “A military camp has its own rules, and a general’s tent cannot be entered at will.”

He never indulged the Dongyi princess that much, otherwise the guards around him would never have dared to block her outside.

However, others did not know this, and since they had seen him treat the Dongyi princess with tolerance, they had begun making private guesses.

“Only you and Chang Jing have ever entered.” Xiao Ji said.

Right after he finished speaking, Long Yi poked his head inside.

The guards… the guards simply could not stop him.

The medicine had already been applied, and Xiao Ji pulled the blanket over her feet before he said to Long Yi, ”Are you hungry?”

Long Yi replied, “Yes, I am hungry.”

Xiao Ji then said to her, “I will take Long Yi to eat something, what would you like to eat?”

Princess Xinyang asked, “What do you have here?”

Xiao Ji let out a self-mocking laugh. Indeed, what could a military camp possibly have?

The eastern region had suffered a snow disaster, and the supply wagons carrying grain and provisions could not arrive smoothly; being able to eat a full meal was already quite fortunate, so how could there be anything to choose from?

He said, “Rest for a while, I will have something sent to you later.”

……

“My Lord, it is already so late and you are going out…” At the entrance, the guard looked strangely at Marquis Xuanping who had his bow on him and was mounted on a tall steed, completely unable to understand what the Marquis was doing fully armed in the middle of the night.

Could he be planning a night raid on the enemy camp?

But why was he going alone?

Was he going to scout enemy movements?

Then why bring a bow?

Xiao Ji tightened the reins and said lightly, “Yes, I am going out for a while. No idle individuals are allowed within a hundred steps of the camp; if they refuse to comply, kill without mercy.”

“Yes!” The guard cupped his hands and answered solemnly.

Xiao Ji rode off and disappeared into the swirling snow.

He was not going to scout the enemy, nor was he going to launch a night raid; instead, he rode deep into the nearby forested mountains and hunted a wild deer.

That night, a steaming bowl of deer-meat soup with soaked flatbread appeared on Princess Xinyang’s table.

Princess Xinyang had become a vegetarian a few years earlier, but after she conceived Yiyi she returned to a balanced diet of meat and vegetables to maintain proper nutrition; Yiyi was weaned at exactly one year old, and after she no longer needed to feed her, Princess Xinyang stopped eating much meat again.

But in such a bitterly cold place, drinking more broth and eating more meat was the best way to resist the severe cold.

Princess Xinyang understood this as well, and she quietly lifted her bowl and chopsticks and began eating.

As something occurred to her, she looked at Xiao Ji, who was sitting nearby wiping his weapons, and she asked, “Aren’t you eating?”

“I have already eaten.” Xiao Ji replied.

After a few mouthfuls of deer-meat soup, Princess Xinyang felt warmth spreading through her entire body, and a thin sheen of sweat appeared on her forehead, while the tip of her nose glistened as well.

“How… how is everything here?” She asked.

Xiao Ji wiped the long sword with a cloth and answered casually, ”The war is almost over.”

“What about Xiao Ming and them?” She continued.

She had used the word “them,” which clearly meant she was not asking only about Xiao Ming.

Marquis Xuanping had two illegitimate sons. Back when Princess Xinyang refused to be husband and wife with him, the Old Madame could not bear to see the family line cut off, so she forced two concubines into his quarters, and afterward Xiao En and Xiao Ze were born.

Although they were born of concubines, the Old Madame, who had no hope of having legitimate grandchildren to raise, doted on them greatly and always kept the two boys at her side.

In the past, their marriage had been as cold as an ice cellar, and Princess Xinyang neither cared about nor concerned herself with his illegitimate sons.

Later, when the Old Madame’s health deteriorated, Xiao En and Xiao Ze went to the military camp, and after a few years they were sent to the eastern front, which made them even more distant from Princess Xinyang.

Xiao Ji said, “Xiao Ming was poisoned and has not woken up, and the antidote is in the hands of the Dongyi people; Xiao En and Xiao Ze are guarding Donglin Pass.”

Princess Xinyang nodded, and after thinking for a moment, she said, “I thought Xiao Ming was only injured.”

Xiao Ji said in an indifferent tone, “The Dongyi people are extremely cunning; the wound showed no abnormalities at first, and only after half a month did the signs of poisoning gradually appear.”

Princess Xinyang asked, “Did you agree to negotiate peace with the Dongyi Tribe for the sake of Xiao Ming’s antidote?”

Xiao Ji’s movement of wiping the sword paused. “The Xiao Family does not let itself be threatened. Xiao Ming may die, but the spine of the State of Zhao’s soldiers must not bend.”

Princess Xinyang felt the spirit of iron and cavalry emanating from him, and her gaze shifted slightly as she asked, “Then why did you——”

“A delaying tactic.” Xiao Ji said, glancing at the sword whose sharp edge now gleamed; the cold light reflected into his long phoenix eyes, giving the depths of his gaze a layer of icy brilliance. “Tomorrow I will attack the Dongyi people; you stay in the camp and do not wander.”

“Let Long Yi go with you.”

“There is no need.”

Xiao Ji slid the long sword back into its sheath. Seeing that she had finished eating, he carried the bowl and chopsticks outside.

Princess Xinyang looked around the simple tent. Marquis Xuanping had grown up surrounded by luxury, and it was difficult to imagine him enduring such hardship at the border.

There were several small holes in the tent, and through them the cold wind and scattered moonlight fell inside. Suddenly, something blocked those holes.

——Xiao Ji had patched the tent.

Princess Xinyang sat on the hard bed and listened to the voices of Xiao Ji and the soldiers outside.

“Please do not do this again next time, my lord, it is too dangerous. If you happened to fall into a trap set by those Dongyi people, things would be terrible!”

Princess Xinyang glanced at the piece of roasted venison Xiao Ji had left for her on the table.

“Who exactly was that person?” The soldier asked.

“My wife.” Xiao Ji said.

After that, the soldier stopped nagging.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
