Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Jiao took the little medicine chest back into the secret chamber, and after reopening the passage to the operating room, everyone went in together to check on Shangguan Yan.

Shangguan Yan was asleep.

Xiao Heng rose and looked around at the others, bowing to Xuanyuan Qi. “Granduncle, you’re here too.”

“Mm.” Xuanyuan Qi nodded, still holding the twins tightly in his arms.

Not even their own father could take them away.

Sigh, there was simply no winning against him.

Xiao Heng turned to Gu Jiao and Ye Qing. “What exactly happened earlier? The door to the operating room suddenly wouldn’t open.”

When the door couldn’t be opened, it meant that the passage had been sealed, just like back when Gu Changqing had once hidden here to recuperate from his injuries.

Gu Jiao recounted to Xiao Heng the events of the twins’ half-day adventure around the capital, while Xuanyuan Qi supplemented the details of what had happened afterward along the way.

Only then did everyone realize that the twins had fallen into the hands of Liao Chen and Taoist Qingfeng.

Gu Jiao pursed her lips and muttered, “You really do have a knack for picking people, don’t you.”

When its energy was completely exhausted, it seemed to have locked onto the nearest familiar aura for positioning. Had the little medicine chest truly gained a mind of its own?

The dragon-and-phoenix twins were safe only because of their incredible luck; had they been ordinary children, they would have likely fallen victim to Zhao Yu’s poisonous scheme long ago.

Thinking of this, Xiao Heng’s gaze turned icy cold. “Mother has been worrying about not finding the right excuse to deal with the Dong Family. Now that Zhao Yu has delivered himself to us, it’s as if he handed her the perfect blade!”

……

That very night, Xiao Heng personally went to the imperial dungeon to interrogate Zhao Yu.

Zhao Yu could not endure torture at all. After the wooden clamps were tightened, he broke instantly, crying and confessing loudly that he had acted under the Dong Family’s orders.

Attempting to harm the imperial family was tantamount to rebellion, a crime punishable by beheading, not to mention that his targets had been Her Majesty’s most beloved legitimate imperial grandchildren.

“Your Majesty, I am innocent! I have been framed!”

The head of the Dong Family knelt on the solemn and imposing floor of the imperial audience hall, his face twisted with grief and indignation as he wept bitterly.

Shangguan Yan’s aura of authority filled the entire hall as she declared, “Bring Zhao Yu to the hall!”

Zhao Yu was escorted in by the imperial guards. Once inside, he pointed directly at the Dong Family head and accused him loudly. “Lord Dong… even now, why won’t you admit it? You were the one who ordered me to enter the imperial palace… to find an opportunity to harm Her Majesty! Since I was not favored and could not get close to Her Majesty, you set your sights on the little prince and princess instead! You said that if I killed them, Her Majesty would lose her composure, and then you would find a way to poison her, making it appear as though she had fallen into despair and died of illness!”

The head of the Dong Family roared in fury, “You lie through your teeth!”

Zhao Yu glared back at him resentfully. “You know very well whether I lie or not! You threatened my family’s lives, forcing me to commit this atrocity against two innocent infants! Master Dong, your heart is truly vicious and cruel!”

“You… you… you…” The Dong Family head was beside himself with rage. In a sudden outburst, he sprang to his feet, seized a guard’s sword, and lunged forward.

But before he could get close, Xuanyuan Qi struck him with a single palm, sending him flying across the hall. He crashed heavily onto the cold marble floor, spitting out a mouthful of blood.

Shangguan Yan slammed her fist against the armrest of the Dragon Throne, her voice like frost. “Drawing a sword in the imperial audience hall, your crime is multiplied! Guards! Drag him out and await my judgment!”

The Dong Family head was not an innocent man. When they had been searching for the Little County Princess in the forest, he had once tried to kill both her and Gu Jiao without hesitation.

His life was one that Shangguan Yan had long decided to take.

The imperial guards mercilessly dragged the crippled Dong Family head away, his dantian already shattered by Xuanyuan Qi’s strike.

Behind him, a thick trail of blood marked the floor, vivid and horrifying.

Within the grand imperial audience hall, the hundred officials stood frozen, silent as cicadas in winter.

They all understood. This was the end of the Dong Family.

If the downfall of the Han and Nangong Families had been due to their own rebellion and self-inflicted ruin, then the collapse of the Dong Family marked something entirely different: it was the first deliberate strike by Her Majesty herself against the great noble houses.

Her Majesty’s campaign to reform and suppress the aristocratic clans had officially begun.

……

After the court was dismissed, Xuanyuan Qi called out to Shangguan Yan.

“Your Majesty.”

“What is it, Uncle?” Shangguan Yan’s tone softened; gone was the sharp edge she had displayed in the imperial audience hall, replaced by the warmth and familiarity of a younger generation addressing an elder.

Xuanyuan Qi looked at her gravely. “The campaign against the noble families. It has begun, hasn’t it?”

Shangguan Yan nodded. “When the Xuanyuan Family was framed and destroyed back then, not a single one of the ten great families was innocent.”

Xuanyuan Qi said in a low voice, “Do not shake the foundations of the nation.”

Shangguan Yan responded earnestly, “I understand. I won’t drive them all to extinction. Some families have rendered great service and redeemed themselves. I will deal with them according to their merits.”

For example, the Su Family. She had originally intended to wipe them out completely, but Mu Qingchen was loyal and patriotic, having achieved outstanding military success at the border. For his sake, she decided to spare the Su Family, on the condition that all major power within the family be handed over to Mu Qingchen.

Then there was the Wang Family. Wang Xu and Wang Man had both remained steadfastly loyal to the court; they were people she could continue to trust.

Xuanyuan Qi hesitated for a moment. “There’s one more thing…”

Shangguan Yan smiled. “Uncle, please speak freely.”

“The Feng Family.” Xuanyuan Qi said. “Can you spare the Feng Family?”

“The Feng Family?” Shangguan Yan thought for a moment and then nodded. “Feng Wuming earned great military merits during the war against the State of Jin. I will record those achievements under the Feng Family’s name.”

The elders of the Feng Family had all passed away, leaving behind only two legitimate sons.

When the Xuanyuan Family had been destroyed, those two sons were still very young and had not participated in the crimes of their fathers’ generation.

She continued, “I won’t move against Feng Wuming or Feng Wuxiu, but the Feng Family’s estates and holdings… I will have to reclaim them.”

“What will you do with them after that?” Xuanyuan Qi asked.

“Return them to you, of course.” Shangguan Yan replied as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

What had once been taken from the Xuanyuan Family naturally ought to be restored to its rightful owner.

Xuanyuan Qi said calmly, “Oh, that won’t be necessary.”

Shangguan Yan looked at her uncle oddly. “What do you mean, ‘won’t be necessary’?”

Xuanyuan Qi explained, “Even if you return them to me, I would still send them back.”

Shangguan Yan was completely baffled.

Send them back? What on earth was he talking about? The more she listened, the less she understood.

Xuanyuan Qi straightened his back proudly and announced with great satisfaction, “As a betrothal gift.”

Shangguan Yan: “???”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
