In the courtyard, Xiao Heng amused the twin babies while Gu Jiao sat with Grandaunt to admire the moon.
Renshou Palace, once the coldest and loneliest palace in the imperial palace, now glowed with the warmth of a true home.
Eunuch Qin gazed at Empress Dowager Zhuang, whose face wore a feigned scowl though her eyes were bright with joy, and he felt heartfelt relief for her.
After drifting through half a lifetime without children of her own, she had thought she would die alone. But Heaven had shown mercy, granting her a peaceful and fulfilled old age.
After bidding farewell to Grandaunt, Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao took the twins back to the Princess Mansion.
They first stopped by to visit Princess Xinyang.
The twins were hungry, so Yu Jin prepared milk bottles for them. They were still too young to drink on their own, so someone had to feed them.
Little Yiyi, now a year and three months old, eagerly volunteered to take on this important task.
“Yiyi will feed.” She said in her soft, milky voice.
Princess Xinyang used to be the type who wouldn’t let the children do anything by themselves, but ever since Marquis Xuanping began taking part in raising them, her attitude had changed considerably.
“Can you hold it properly?” She asked her little daughter.
Little Yiyi patted her small chest proudly. “I can!”
Princess Xinyang handed both bottles to her.
Yiyi climbed onto a stool and into the twins’ crib to feed them.
She decided to feed her little nephew first because he was thinner, and thin babies should eat first!
“Opun (Open) mouth.” She said in her soft, childish tone to Xiao Cong as she sat cross-legged.
When Xiao Cong didn’t open his mouth, she decisively pushed the small bottle nipple between his lips.
Xiao Cong had just taken one sip when Yiyi pulled the bottle away and took two big gulps herself.
Her feeding philosophy was clear: You take one sip, I take one sip; I take another sip, and then I’ll give you a tiny one.
So it truly made sense that little Xiao Cong couldn’t grow chubby. Not only did he miss out on Long Yi’s midnight snacks, but he also had to endure having his milk stolen by his little aunt.
Poor thing, his life was just too hard.
Princess Xinyang asked calmly, “Yiyi, did you steal Cong’er’s milk again?”
“No, no, Yiyi didn’t.” Little Yiyi replied, then gave a very full-sounding burp.
Princess Xinyang: “...”
……
The next day, Gu Jiao brought the twin babies back to Bishui Alley, while Xiao Heng, as usual, came over after finishing his work.
Everyone in the alley had heard that Gu Jiao had given birth to a pair of dragon-phoenix twins, and they all came rushing to see the two little ones.
The babies were very well-behaved, letting the neighbors crowd around them without fuss, and even making a few soft cooing sounds from time to time, so adorable that everyone’s hearts melted.
Aunt Liu suddenly felt that Grandaunt’s son wasn’t so attractive anymore. She wanted to steal a baby instead!
Gu Xiaobao was now two and a half years old. He had grown taller and lost the baby fat from his cheeks, making him look thinner, but sharp and lively.
The only problem was, he was still incredibly lazy.
For example, when asked to help feed the twin babies, he couldn’t even be bothered to fight for the milk.
He fed them with the calm detachment of a little monk.
“Big sister.”
He called her “big sister” now with complete ease.
“What is it, Xiaobao?” Gu Jiao looked at him.
“Little brother and sister, so small.” He said, staring at the babies lying on the bed.
Gu Jiao laughed. “They’re not your little brother and sister, they’re your nephew and niece.”
Gu Xiaobao was clearly unfamiliar with those terms. He had only ever heard of ‘grandson’ and ‘granddaughter’ before. Grandpa Zhao next door had those.
He thought they meant the same thing.
After a moment of serious thought, he said gravely, “But I’m not old.”
Only old grandpas had grandsons and granddaughters.
“Hahaha!” Gu Jiao burst into laughter.
Gu Xiaobao couldn’t quite understand what “nephew” and “niece” meant, but when Gu Jiao told him the words ‘Little Uncle’, he finally figured it out. That, he could handle.
“I’m Little Uncle?” He asked.
“Yes.” Gu Jiao said.
He thought about it seriously for a moment, then nodded. “All right.”
He was a year older now, no longer the little boy who would spread his fingers wide to pat his chest and wave his small hand afterward.
To him, that sort of thing was only for ‘Xiaobao the baby’ to do.
Gu Jiao was surprised at how much he had changed. Children truly did grow and change from one day to the next.
Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun had gone to school, leaving only Yao shi and a few servant girls at home.
Yao shi came to the east room carrying a tray of pastries she had made herself. She knew her daughter didn’t like overly sweet things, so she had only added a little sugar.
“You came over early this morning; you must be hungry. Eat something.” Yao shi placed the pastries before Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao picked up a piece of almond cake and took a bite. It still tasted the same as before, wonderfully good.
Yao shi set the tray on a stool and turned to look at the two little ones.
It was a hot day, so Gu Jiao had loosened their swaddling. Xiao Cong was still a quiet, handsome little boy, while Xiao Yan was curiously gazing around, occasionally stretching her tiny limbs, absolutely adorable.
Both children were healthy; Xiao Yan was a bit chubbier.
Looking at them, Yao shi couldn’t help but think of Gu Yan and Gu Jiao in their infancy. Not being able to raise her biological daughter herself was a lifelong regret in her heart.
That sense of loss, the pain of missing all those precious years, was something that not even reunion could truly make up for. There would always be an empty space in her heart that could never be filled.
But with the arrival of Xiao Cong and Xiao Yan, that emptiness had begun to fill, bit by bit.
She loved the two children dearly and was deeply grateful for them.
“Mother, nephew and niece, so small.” Gu Xiaobao repeated his opinion once again.
“You were this small too when you were little.” Yao shi said, then suddenly looked at him in surprise. “You even know what nephew and niece are?”
“Big sister told me,” Gu Xiaobao said. “I’m a Little Uncle.”
Yao shi smiled and stroked his little head. “Xiaobao is so smart.”
The Little Uncle sincerely wanted to be a good elder, but alas, his forty-day-old nephew and niece did nothing but eat and sleep. They couldn’t play with him at all.
After sitting by the bed for a while, he grew bored and went out to find his playmates in the alley.
Marquis Gu arrived home at the same time as Xiao Heng. Xiao Heng had just come off duty and coincidentally, so had he.
Both were still dressed in their official robes.
In the State of Zhao, only officials of the third rank and above were allowed to wear purple robes. Marquis Gu, being a fourth-rank Deputy Minister of Works, wore scarlet.
He looked at Xiao Heng, who was much younger than him, of lower seniority, yet already clad in purple, and suddenly felt a surge of discomfort.
The more the father-in-law looked at his son-in-law, the more irritated he became.
He truly hadn’t expected that the poor scholar he had once looked down upon would turn out to be the Little Marquis of Zhao who had been lost among the common folk!
No wonder he had topped the imperial examination!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
