The news that the Grand Secretary’s household had been blessed with dragon and phoenix twins quickly spread throughout the entire capital. The common folk all said that the glow of rosy clouds that day had been a sign of auspicious fortune brought by the twin boy and girl, who, when they grew up, were sure to become a handsome young gentleman and an elegant young lady.
——And absolutely not a pair of little troublemakers who would turn the world upside down!
Gu Jiao did not have much milk, and whether it was hereditary or other reasons, the two little ones refused to drink from the wet nurse. Thus, the little medicine chest took on the duties of a wet nurse. It not only produced feeding bottles but also conjured up infant formula fit for a newborn nursery.
After drinking their fill with soft “guji-guji” sounds, the two little ones lay beside Gu Jiao and fell into a sweet slumber.
When Xiao Heng came into the room carrying a bowl of nourishing soup, Gu Jiao was staring wide-eyed at the two babies, her expression one of utter disbelief, as if to say, “are these really the children I gave birth to?”
Xiao Heng couldn’t help but laugh. He walked over and sat down by the bed. “Mother had the cook make you some chicken soup.”
“Did they put in any salt?” Gu Jiao asked.
At that, Xiao Heng chuckled aloud. “They did. You’re not breastfeeding now, so you can eat and drink like a normal person.”
“Oh.” Gu Jiao took the bowl and drank the steaming chicken soup in several big gulps.
When she finished, she handed the bowl back to Xiao Heng and sighed softly. When one cares for another, even the smallest change in their expression never goes unnoticed.
“What’s wrong?” Xiao Heng asked. “Is something on your mind?”
“Mm… not exactly.” Gu Jiao shook her head.
After so many days, all the shock had already passed, and she had more or less digested it all. It was just that, from time to time, when she recalled everything, she still couldn’t help feeling a little emotional.
She had, after all, traveled through time and space three times; once with her own body, becoming the Lord of the Shadows, and twice with her soul, first as Jing Yinyin, and now in this life.
But she barely retained any memory of the first two times; perhaps the transmigration had disrupted her memories due to temporal and spatial interference.
The little medicine chest could carry both the body and soul through space-time. But if the body was lost, only the soul could travel.
When she first came here, she had left a coordinate within the Imperial Advisor’s Hall. Specifically, in that operating room.
Because of that coordinate, after her plane had been destroyed and her real body perished, the little medicine chest was able to carry her brainwaves into this time and space.
However, without the purple herb poison, her brainwaves could not have fused with another person’s body. Her Godfather had known this, and that was why he had planted purple herbs on Hidden Night Island.
As for how her Godfather had known that she had left a coordinate in this timeline, perhaps that would forever remain a mystery.
Xiao Heng glanced at her, frowning. “You’re… thinking about that Godfather again, aren’t you?”
These days, he was extremely jealous of that man, especially after learning how much the fellow had sacrificed for Gu Jiao. It made him feel as though the man had stolen his role entirely.
Gu Jiao tilted her head at him. “Ah Heng, are you jealous again?”
“Young miss! Duke An is here!” Yu Ya’er’s voice called from outside.
Xiao Heng cleared his throat lightly. “Of course not!”
Saying that, he went out and pushed Duke An into the room.
Duke An had come to see Gu Jiao and the newborn twins. He ached for the pain she had endured in childbirth, but at the same time, he was deeply comforted to see that she had brought into the world a pair of dragon and phoenix twins.
The two little ones were simply adorable.
Though their features hadn’t yet fully formed, they already bore striking resemblances to their parents. How could they possibly grow up to be anything but beautiful?
Among the items the Imperial Advisor had entrusted Ye Qing to deliver to Gu Jiao were several handwritten letters, one of which mentioned that the Imperial Advisor had told Duke An about Gu Jiao’s true identity as Jing Yinyin.
“Father.” Gu Jiao called softly.
Duke An froze mid-motion, the arm holding one of the babies going stiff as he turned toward her in astonishment.
Gu Jiao’s lips curved faintly. “The Imperial Advisor told me.”
She did not specify what exactly he had said, but Duke An was far too clever not to understand.
He had never dreamed he would hear her call him that. He had thought that neither of them would ever pierce that fragile veil between them——
But even if they hadn’t, he would have been content, simply being able to stay by her side as he was now.
On the bed, one of the little fellows gave a soft, dissatisfied whimper, as though complaining that their grandfather had been holding her brother for far too long and wasn’t paying any attention to her.
Duke An looked at the two tiny faces, then back at Gu Jiao, a tide of indescribable emotion surging in his chest.
“Could you… call me that once more?” He asked, both anxious and hopeful.
Gu Jiao did not hesitate. “Father!”
Tears of joy welled up in Duke An’s eyes as he broke into a smile.
……
The dragon and phoenix twins grew and changed by the day. When they were first born, they were as tiny as newborn kittens, but by the end of their first month, they had already become two plump, chubby little babies.
Princess Xinyang and Shangguan Yan, who was far away in the State of Yan, each bestowed a name upon the two little ones. The daughter was named ‘Xiao Yan’ and the son ‘Xiao Cong’.
Even while still in the womb, Xiao Cong could never outmatch his sister; the same remained true after birth. Xiao Yan could eat more than he could and was rounder too. Whenever their swaddling cloths were loosened, she would stretch out one small foot and shove him right to the edge of the cradle.
Xiao Yan’s growth was so astonishing that she finally drew Gu Jiao’s attention.
When Xiao Heng returned from court, he found Gu Jiao sitting by the cradle, rubbing her chin thoughtfully as she stared at the two babies.
“Why are you looking at them like that?” Xiao Heng asked with a smile.
Gu Jiao asked in puzzlement, “I feed them the same way, so why is Xiao Yan growing so fast?”
Xiao Heng thought for a moment. “Maybe… she just absorbs nutrients better?”
Gu Jiao rubbed her chin again. “Is that so?”
Of course, that was not the reason.
Xiao Yan was growing fast because someone had been secretly feeding her extra meals every night.
One pitch-dark, windy night, a shadowy figure flashed into the room like a ghost, holding a tiny feeding bottle.
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng were sound asleep.
The two babies were also deep in their dreams in their respective cradles.
The shadow crept up to Xiao Yan’s cradle as if no one else existed in the world and promptly stuffed the bottle’s nipple into her mouth.
The moment Xiao Yan tasted the milk, she began to gulp it down happily.
Gu Jiao suddenly pulled open the bed curtains, fixing a stern gaze upon the shadowy figure by the cradle. “Long Yi!”
Long Yi froze, then said with an utterly serious face, “It’s not me!”
Gu Jiao: “…”
Having been caught red-handed, Long Yi had his little feeding bottle confiscated. Gu Jiao dragged him outside and said sternly, “You’re not allowed to do this anymore. Starting tomorrow night, you mustn’t sneak in to feed her again.”
What Long Yi heard was: Blah blah blah… starting tomorrow night… Blah blah… sneak in to feed her again.
A few days later, Gu Jiao noticed that Xiao Yan had grown even more splendidly.
Originally, after the confinement month ended, she had planned to take the twins into the palace to visit their Grandaunt and then return to Bishui Alley to see Yao shi. However, it had rained for several days straight, and it wasn’t until the end of the third month that the skies finally cleared.
Gu Jiao brought the dragon and phoenix twins with her and first went to the Imperial Academy to pick up Little Jing Kong after class. Little Jing Kong had just finished his mounted archery lesson and was drenched in sweat.
He was eight years old by nominal age this year. Before, he had always looked younger than his actual years, but since the beginning of spring, he had suddenly started shooting up in height.
He had also grown stronger. His instructor said he was the only one in the primary class who could draw an adult’s bow.
His eyes now carried less of that soft, childish roundness and more of a calm determination and resolve.
“Hello, JiaoJiao! Hello, Xiao Yan! Hello, Xiao Cong!”
He climbed into the carriage and politely greeted the three, even though Xiao Yan and Xiao Cong were far too young to respond.
Gu Jiao took out a handkerchief and wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Why are you sweating so much?”
It wasn’t even the fourth month yet, and the weather was still quite cool.
While enjoying the attention, Little Jing Kong replied earnestly, “We had mounted archery today, JiaoJiao. I took first place again!”
Gu Jiao praised him warmly. “Jing Kong is truly amazing.”
Little Jing Kong wiggled his small head in delight.
The all-powerful little lord of the Imperial Academy was, before JiaoJiao, still the same adorable child as ever!
After she finished wiping his sweat, he asked, “JiaoJiao, can I ride a horse on my own?”
He had ridden a small pony during class that day but it wasn’t thrilling enough for him.
Gu Jiao nodded. “All right.”
She had brought a horse for him anyway.
Little Jing Kong stepped onto a wooden stool and mounted the horse king’s back.
Gripping the reins tightly, his gaze firm and unwavering, he already exuded the budding air of a young war god. “Little Eleven, let’s go!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
