Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
From the very first day they met, the two of them had been at odds, battling each other with wits and courage, sparring with every tactic under the sun. Don’t think she didn’t know.
Since the window paper had been pierced, then just so be it.
Xiao Heng gave a polite, measured smile.
The scenery of the Princess Mansion was delightful, its design and layout ranking among the top three in the capital.
A cool breeze stirred, flowers released their fragrance, refreshing the spirit.
The two of them walked on for a while longer.
“Actually…” Gu Jiao parted her lips to speak.
Xiao Heng suddenly felt his chest tighten, as though afraid of hearing something he did not want to hear. So he quickly spoke first, making the decision himself, “Actually, we’re still young, and I’ve just begun my official career. I really don’t have the energy to care for a child——”
At this point, even his breathing grew taut.
It was too painful.
He couldn’t say the words.
Gu Jiao stopped walking. Since their hands were joined, he stopped with her.
She looked steadily at him. “You don’t want this child?”
“That’s not what I mean——” Xiao Heng instinctively refuted. How could he not want it? He just——
Wait.
She was asking him?
His gaze shifted, carrying a trace of nervousness as he looked at her. “JiaoJiao, why are you asking me that? Do you… want it?”
Gu Jiao lowered her eyes, glanced at her still-flat belly, and nodded.
A flash of joy swept through Xiao Heng’s eyes. “JiaoJiao…”
“Why are you making that face? Did you think I wouldn’t want it?”
Xiao Heng gave a somewhat sheepish smile, not answering her question directly. Instead, he said, “Then why didn’t you say a word just now? I thought you were upset.”
“I just hadn’t wrapped my head around it yet.” She gazed earnestly at her belly. “How could there suddenly be a baby in there?”
She herself had turned into a curious little child.
Xiao Heng felt his heart melt from her adorableness. How could there be such a wonderful JiaoJiao in this world?
He stroked her head, chuckling as he asked, “Why did you suddenly change your mind?”
Gu Jiao answered honestly, “It wasn’t sudden. After that time I met Tang Yueshan, my outlook seemed to change quite a lot.”
Because Tang Ming was not a perfect son, he wasn’t even a good son. He had too many flaws in his nature and character.
But Tang Yueshan’s love for him never diminished in the least, and he had never once given up on his son.
The strength she had lost in childhood when she was abandoned, she found again in Tang Yueshan.
Xiao Heng had truly never expected that the one who could alter her state of mind would be Tang Yueshan.
He drew her into his arms, gently caressing her head. He had countless things in his heart. He wanted to thank her, to praise her, but when the words reached his lips, he realized none of them could properly convey what he felt.
So he only held her tighter, letting her feel his emotions.
He wanted their child.
He looked forward to the arrival of this little life.
After returning to the room, the very first thing Gu Jiao did was take out the little medicine chest.
She told Xiao Heng to go bathe first, while she herself glared at the little medicine chest with a sharp, predatory gaze.
“Speak!”
“Was it you playing tricks again?”
“Did you poke holes in the little dudu or not?”
A night breeze swept by, but the little medicine chest remained utterly silent.
In the end, whether it was truly the two of them hitting the mark in one try, or whether it was some improper little medicine chest springing a flaw in its family planning system, no one would ever know.
……
After Gu Jiao finished bathing, Xiao Heng pressed her beneath him and kissed her for a while, but he did not go all the way in the end, restraining himself and letting her sleep instead.
The signs of her pregnancy were not entirely without trace.
For example, in recent days she had grown tired very quickly, though he had assumed it was simply because his stamina was too good and she had been worn out by him.
“So it turns out you’re pregnant.”
“But my stamina really is good.”
Xiao Heng raised his brows as he looked at Gu Jiao, who fell asleep instantly in his arms. Stroking her cheek gently, he gave her another kiss before pulling over a thin silk cloth to cover her.
From outside the courtyard came the noisy clamor of one big and one small. It was Little Jing Kong and Shangguan Qing returning.
Casting one glance at Gu Jiao, Xiao Heng quietly got out of bed, opened the door, and said to Little Jing Kong, “JiaoJiao is asleep, go take your bath first.”
The moment Little Jing Kong heard that JiaoJiao was asleep, he immediately switched into silent mode, waved at Shangguan Qing, and mouthed noiselessly, “Big Brother Qing, goodbye!”
Shangguan Qing, utterly exhausted, leaned against a pillar, not even having the strength left to twitch the corner of his lips: Heh, best if we never meet again!
Little Jing Kong, however, was frighteningly full of energy. The two of them had gone out together, shopping, buying things, admiring lanterns, boating on the lake, doing exactly the same things. He was six years old now and no longer needed to be carried around endlessly.
Yet Shangguan Qing had collapsed from exhaustion, while Little Jing Kong was still hopping and skipping!
Bouncing up the steps, he waved to his “bad brother-in-law” and went inside to check on Gu Jiao.
Seeing that she truly was asleep, he nodded to himself. His bad brother-in-law hadn’t lied.
“You reek of sweat, hurry and bathe.” Xiao Heng urged in a low voice.
Little Jing Kong planted his hands on his hips, bristling in a whisper: “My sweat is fragrant! Yours is the stinky one! Stinky brother-in-law!”
Xiao Heng: Little monk, three and a half years have passed, and you’re still this arrogant. Do you not realize you’re about to lose favor soon?
Yu Ya’er prepared hot water for Little Jing Kong.
He stripped off all his clothes and climbed into the wooden tub to soak.
He was in high spirits today, not only because he had gone shopping with his Big Brother Qing, but more importantly because tomorrow the Imperial Academy had a holiday, and JiaoJiao had promised to take him on an outing!
Without the bad brother-in-law tagging along, too!
As he washed, he began to sing again in his little “bathhouse.”
The door was closed, so there was no worry about disturbing Gu Jiao, but the servant girls and older female servants on duty outside heard every word.
At first there were only one or two, then gradually three or four more gathered.
By the time Xiao Heng came to check on his bath, the whole courtyard’s servants had gathered there, ears pricked, listening to Jing Kong’s singing with great amusement.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
