The next day, after sending Little Jing Kong to the Imperial Academy, Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng went to Bishui Alley.
Since Qinghe Academy had a holiday that day, Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun were both at home.
Seeing Gu Jiao and their brother-in-law, both of them were delighted.
Gu Xiaoshun put down the bucket he was halfway through carrying and walked over. “Big sis, didn’t you just come back not long ago? Why are you here again?”
Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow. “What, you don’t want to see me?”
“No! I… I just…” Gu Xiaoshun scratched his head, stammering as he struggled to find words.
He liked his sister so much that he wished he could see her every day, but he was afraid that if she didn’t stay in her husband’s estate often enough, it might upset her in-laws.
But Princess Xinyang was a very open-minded mother-in-law. What would truly worry her was if Gu Jiao shut herself away in the estate and never went out.
Besides, today was a special day.
Gu Yan saw through everything but didn’t say it aloud. After greeting his sister and brother-in-law, he eagerly looked out the door.
“What are you staring at?” Gu Xiaoshun asked him.
“There.” Gu Yan gestured with his eyes for Gu Xiaoshun to look outside.
Gu Xiaoshun focused his gaze and saw another carriage stop in front of their house. From it, Eunuch Qin, disguised, helped Grandaunt dressed as an elderly woman down from the carriage.
“Grandaunt!” Gu Xiaoshun’s eyes lit up. “Your foot’s all better?”
Eunuch Qin corrected him. “It was my foot that was injured.”
The Empress Dowager had taken a fall, and he had served as her human cushion!
Gu Xiaoshun: “…”
Gu Xiaoshun coughed lightly and asked, “So, has Eunuch Qin’s foot healed?”
Eunuch Qin hobbled exaggeratedly into the house, giving Gu Xiaoshun a look that said, ‘figure it out for yourself.’
“Even Eunuch Qin’s temper has gotten this bad?” Gu Xiaoshun scratched his head, then turned to Grandaunt, who was drenched in sweat and nearly suffering from heatstroke. “Grandaunt, in such scorching weather, aren’t you the one who hates going out the most? How come you came here just to play leaf cards?”
“Leaf cards, ha.” Empress Dowager Zhuang gave him a side-eye and entered the house with a sour face.
Gu Yan looked at him and said, “Fool.” After saying that, he too went inside.
Gu Xiaoshun was completely baffled. “What’s going on here?”
Gu Jiao curved her lips slightly. “You even forgot your own birthday?”
His… birthday?
Gu Xiaoshun froze in place.
In their family, there were five juniors. Gu Jiao and Gu Yan were dragon and phoenix twins, Xiao Heng and Little Jing Kong were both born on New Year’s Eve, all easy to remember.
Only his birthday was solitary, falling on no special date at all, just like himself.
“What’s the point of celebrating some small birthday…”
He muttered with a pout, but his nose began to sting, and his eyes grew hot.
Lately, the whole family had been busy with his sister’s and brother-in-law’s marriage, and even he himself had forgotten about his birthday.
“No way, Gu Xiaoshun, are you crying?”
Somehow Gu Yan had appeared right behind him.
Gu Xiaoshun quickly wiped his tears and said with a serious face, “I’m not. I’m a grown man, how could I possibly cry?”
Gu Yan gave a little snort through his nose. “You haven’t even grown all your hair yet! And you call yourself a grown man!”
Gu Xiaoshun shot back, “And have you grown all your hair?”
Gu Yan answered with superiority, “I’m older than you!”
Gu Xiaoshun held up one finger. “By just one year!”
Gu Yan looked up to the sky. “Still older!”
The two of them bickered back and forth, when suddenly Yu Ya’er came running in, panic written all over her face. “Something terrible has happened!”
Hearing the commotion, Gu Jiao came out from the house and asked her, “What happened?”
Yu Ya’er rushed to Gu Jiao, clutching her arms, and sobbed uncontrollably. “Madame took Xiaobao… to the teahouse to buy some pastries… the teahouse suddenly caught fire… Xiaobao and Madame are trapped inside… they haven’t come out!”
Today was Gu Xiaoshun’s birthday, and Yao shi had taken Gu Xiaobao early in the morning to a teahouse to buy tea leaves and pastries, never imagining that they would encounter such a situation.
A madman had actually set fire inside the teahouse. The flames on the first floor had already been extinguished, yet none of the guests trapped in the private rooms on the second floor dared to rush out.
The reason was simple. This madman had splashed kerosene all over the corridors, and even the backyard was doused in it.
He stood up on the roof, clutching a burning torch in his right hand. The rooftop had several large holes broken open, right above the stairwell and corridors.
No one could guarantee that, at the very instant they tried to escape, the madman would not hurl down the torch in his hand.
The only reason Yu Ya’er was able to get out was because Gu Xiaobao had cried for candied hawthorn, and when she went across the street to buy him a skewer and had just handed over the money, the great fire broke out.
The teahouse stood at the eastern end of Chang’an Street, right at the corner, not far from Bishui Alley.
When Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng arrived at the scene, the local constables had also been alarmed and rushed over. In order to prevent unnecessary injuries, they formed a living wall with their bodies, driving the onlookers far back.
The shops across the street were crowded with spectators.
At this moment, even the authority of the Renshou Palace token no longer worked.
Fortunately, Xiao Heng held an official post at the Ministry of Justice.
“Ministry of Justice investigation.” He presented his official command token from the Ministry of Justice to the constables of Jingzhao Office.
After examining the token and confirming its authenticity, the constable’s expression eased somewhat. Then his gaze turned to Gu Jiao. “And who is she?”
Xiao Heng’s face did not change in the slightest as he said, “A physician summoned by the Ministry of Justice.”
The commotion had indeed caused many people to be injured.
Having no reason to doubt him, the constable let the two of them pass.
When they reached the front of the teahouse, however, they unexpectedly caught sight of a familiar figure.
Gu Jiao blinked in astonishment. “Tang Yueshan?”
Tang Yueshan was pressing his left hand against his abdomen, blood seeping constantly from between his fingertips. His face was pale, his breathing labored.
——He was wounded.
He heard Gu Jiao’s voice and turned his head toward her. At the same time, his gaze fell upon Xiao Heng. His brows knitted together; he wanted to speak but hesitated, his expression betraying embarrassment and awkwardness.
Both Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng’s eyes turned in unison toward the arsonist on the roof.
The man was disheveled and filthy, his appearance utterly wretched. It took them quite some effort to recognize who he was.
“Tang Ming?” Gu Jiao asked in confusion.
“It’s him.” Xiao Heng confirmed.
The last time they had seen Tang Ming was two or three years ago. At that time, no matter how dark and contemptible his heart might have been, on the surface he still presented himself as a refined and charming young master.
Now, however, he and this deranged, ragged arsonist were like two entirely different people.
“What happened?” Gu Jiao asked Tang Yueshan, then glanced at his abdomen. “You’re injured.”
“I’m fine.” Tang Yueshan said.
“He did this?” Gu Jiao was referring to Tang Ming.
With Tang Yueshan’s martial skills, unless one of those few great figures personally took action, it was nearly impossible for anyone to injure him in single combat.
Tang Yueshan sighed. “When I returned to the capital, I found that he was mixing with a group of unsavory people. We had a terrible quarrel, and he ran away from home. This morning I discovered him lying in a gambling den, taking Wushi powder with those people.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
