The scene unfolded so quickly that even Gongsun Yu didn’t have time to react.
It was mainly because Gongsun Yu never expected Shangguan Qing to pull off such a move. After all, the two of them weren’t supposed to know any martial arts; Shangguan Yan once did, but her abilities had been crippled long ago. In any case, sending Xie Hangzhou to capture the two of them should have been more than enough.
So Gongsun Yu didn’t intervene.
And yet, before his very eyes, he saw Xie Hangzhou get blasted away with sheer brute force.
The terrifying impact was so strong that even Gongsun Yu felt a wave of pressure pressing down on him.
This cave happened to serve as a junction between several main tunnels and was relatively spacious. Xie Hangzhou smashed into the ceiling with such force that it nearly caused the entire floor to collapse beneath them.
Dust rained down on everyone like a curtain of ash.
Gongsun Yu lifted a hand to shield his eyes from the falling debris.
The others also raised their arms, with some covering their faces, others protecting their heads.
The only one among them who wasn’t unfamiliar with that sound was Elder Lu.
Back when he and Elder Zhang entered Ghost Mountain to rescue Min Hongyi, the one who called himself the Ghost King, Shangguan Qing, had used this very same weapon to kill Elder Zhang.
The weapon’s power had been so overwhelming that Elder Lu hadn’t dared confront it directly. Instead of avenging Elder Zhang, he had fled in haste, taking the severely wounded Min Hongyi with him.
Unfortunately, Min Hongyi had still ended up with a silver spear through the heart from another young man, and all Elder Lu could bring back was a corpse.
That encounter had already left him haunted by the weapon, and now that he had experienced its might again up close, the unease in his heart only deepened.
He had an increasingly disturbing feeling, that the weapon in Shangguan Qing’s hands wasn’t something any master could block, no matter how powerful they were.
Xie Hangzhou now lay sprawled on the ground, his body a mangled, bloody mess. Though he wasn’t dead yet, it was clear to everyone that he was beyond saving.
As soon as Xie Hangzhou had been blasted away, the stone gate in the ground had slammed shut. Gongsun Yu quickly moved to the section of the stone wall that Shangguan Qing had just touched, but the gate didn’t respond at all.
Gongsun Yu stomped on the stone gate and smashed it open, but inside the hidden chamber, Shangguan Qing and Shangguan Yan had already vanished without a trace.
He jumped down in pursuit, hoping to find the tunnel they had used to escape, but the surrounding walls were all solid stone. That left only one possibility, the passage had been sealed off.
He furrowed his brows slightly, something he rarely did. “Who designed this mechanism?”
So ingenious!
Compared to whoever had built this, Yue Liuyi’s skills almost seemed amateurish.
“What now, General?” Elder Lu suppressed the shock in his heart and asked calmly.
Gongsun Yu responded coldly, “Search. Dig three feet into the ground if you must. Find them for me!”
Elder Lu said, “That may be easier said than done.”
Gongsun Yu let out a cold snort. “Then burn it! I don’t believe that if I turn this whole tunnel into a dragon of fire, they’ll still be able to hide!”
……
Meanwhile, in another tunnel, Shangguan Qing and Shangguan Yan finally stopped to catch their breath after confirming they were temporarily safe.
Shangguan Yan leaned back against the wall, her hands on her hips, wiping the sweat from her forehead as she panted heavily. “Son, why in the world did you run off to the border? If JiaoJiao hadn’t come to warn me, I wouldn’t even have known you were trapped in Ghost Mountain!”
“Who’s JiaoJiao?” Shangguan Qing asked in confusion.
Shangguan Yan looked even more confused than he was. “Didn’t you two already meet? JiaoJiao went into Ghost Mountain with Tang Yueshan. They even took a newborn baby with them. Oh right, that baby is being temporarily fostered in a wealthy household in the city. There’s a wet nurse, so it’s very safe.”
With that explanation, Shangguan Qing finally understood.
And then he became even more surprised. “He’s… called JiaoJiao?”
What male would have that kind of name?
Shangguan Yan said, “I’ll tell you more about JiaoJiao in a bit. You first tell me, what exactly happened here?”
“Well…” Shangguan Qing’s eyes flickered, then he suddenly bent down his tall figure, rubbing his head against her shoulder like a spoiled child. “I missed you, so I came looking for you… And now you’re scolding me instead of praising me… *sniff sniff* Am I not your precious little darling anymore?”
Shangguan Yan’s expression didn’t waver in the slightest. “Overacting.”
And those lines? Completely cringeworthy!
What "precious little darling"?
He was twenty years old already!
More like a grown-up darling, huh!
Shangguan Qing instantly dropped the act, straightening up with a sheepish look as he rubbed his nose. “Well… I just came out to have a bit of fun.”
Shangguan Yan glared at him darkly. “You call ending up at the border ‘a bit of fun’?”
Shangguan Qing muttered defensively, “I’ve never been here before.”
Shangguan Yan: “…”
Shangguan Yan’s expression turned stern as she said, “I’ll settle the matter of you sneaking to the border when we get back. For now, tell me how you ended up in Gongsun Yu’s hands.”
Shangguan Qing pouted unhappily. “It’s all that Xie Hangzhou’s fault…”
After discovering suspicious movement underground, Xie Hangzhou had immediately ordered the Jin army to start digging tunnels with all their might. At first, they only excavated beneath the village, but later Xie Hangzhou had a sudden burst of inspiration and decided to dig into the forested mountain behind them.
As they kept digging, they actually managed to uncover quite a few hidden passages.
At first, for every tunnel the Jin army dug, Shangguan Qing would have someone block it. But with twenty thousand soldiers digging nonstop, they were quickly losing ground. If this continued and all exits were sealed, they would be completely trapped inside.
So Shangguan Qing took a gamble, and using his identity as the Eldest Imperial Grandson, he turned himself in.
From Xie Hangzhou’s perspective, the lives of a thousand lowly refugees underground weren’t worth even a fraction compared to an imperial heir. Sure enough, after capturing Shangguan Qing, he stopped focusing on digging people out.
Then, planning to destroy the tunnels altogether, Xie Hangzhou was deceived by Shangguan Qing, who claimed there was a treasure hidden below. As long as the Jin army spared his life, he would offer the treasure to them.
Shangguan Yan twitched at the corner of her mouth. “And Xie Hangzhou actually believed that?”
How gullible was he to fall for such an obvious lie?
Shangguan Qing pointed to himself. “Clearly it’s because your son here… is just that amazing!”
Shangguan Yan was covered in metaphorical black lines.
Son, just where does all this unwarranted self-confidence come from?
Shangguan Qing raised an eyebrow. “Originally I planned to trick Xie Hangzhou into one of the traps and kill him off. Who knew he’d send word to Gongsun Yu? Now that guy at least has some brains. I could tell he had potential, so I didn’t want to get rid of him too quickly.”
Shangguan Yan: “…”
Let’s be real, you probably ‘couldn’t’ get rid of him, right?
Gongsun Yu was not only an exceptional martial expert but also quick-witted. Compared to him, Xie Hangzhou was far easier to deal with.
Shangguan Qing had circled around and bided his time, but the right opportunity to take Gongsun Yu down never came. And then, just earlier, he had stumbled upon his own mother in that little cave.
Shangguan Yan let out a sigh.
Her emotions were a complicated swirl.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
