Since Gu Jiao was sharing the same horse with Xuanyuan Qi, it became quite inconvenient for her to continue holding the baby.

She was deeply worried that a sudden jolt or abrupt stop might end up crushing the child into a meat patty.

“Old Tang, here you go.” Gu Jiao handed the baby over to Tang Yueshan.

Tang Yueshan stretched both arms out as straight as possible, looking like he wished he could hold the baby as far away from himself as humanly possible. “Can I say no to this?”

Gu Jiao lifted her chin slightly and responded in a spirited tone, “No, you absolutely cannot!”

Tang Yueshan glanced at Xuanyuan Qi, who stood there like the terrifying Ghost King guarding the mountain, and accepted his fate by carefully bundling the baby against his chest.

It’s fine, soon I’ll have a godson of my own!

Even though my godson doesn’t practice martial arts, he’s got a brilliant mind.

Once I rescue him, I’ll let him deal with you two, big and small demons!

Tang Yueshan was filled with confidence at the thought and suddenly life felt bright and full of hope!

As for the plan to leave the city, they had initially considered two options.

First, to disguise themselves as merchants or common folk and sneak out amidst the crowd, but this idea had to be abandoned the moment they arrived in the city center.

The reason was that the entire city had unexpectedly gone under lockdown. The number of patrolling Jin soldiers had doubled, and their figures could now be seen on every street.

Gu Jiao pondered, could it be that news from Ghost Mountain has already reached the City Lord’s residence?

Do they think we escaped from there and are now trying to stop us from leaving by tightening security so suddenly?

Whatever the case, with the situation having escalated to this point, leaving through the city gates had become virtually impossible.

That left them with no choice but to proceed with the second plan.

“You two, stay here and wait.” Xuanyuan Qi instructed.

Gu Jiao and Tang Yueshan nodded in agreement.

Xuanyuan Qi leapt into the air and disappeared into the night without another word.

Roughly half an hour later, he returned carrying a large bundle slung over his shoulder. Inside the bundle were three warm sets of Jin army armor, complete with their corresponding military tokens and identity iron tags.

“I don’t recognize the writing of the State of Jin. What names are written on these tags?” Gu Jiao muttered.

“Don’t look at me, I can’t read it either.” Tang Yueshan replied.

Gu Jiao, sitting on horseback, tilted her head to glance at Xuanyuan Qi. Her eyes sparkled as if to say, you know, right? Learned and talented former Lord of the Shadows?

Xuanyuan Qi casually took the iron tag, and with an exaggerated flair, loosened his grip and let it fall straight into a crack in the ground. “Oops! It’s gone!”

Gu Jiao’s face instantly turned pitch black with exasperation.

You, actually, just, don’t, recognize, it, right?!

These kinds of iron tags were typically only used for identifying corpses in the event of death in battle.

In daily life, no one really checked them, so losing one wasn’t a big deal.

In addition to that, Xuanyuan Qi somehow managed to procure a small bamboo basket that was just the right size to carry a baby inside.

But obviously, merely having a basket wasn’t going to be enough. Newborns could start crying at the drop of a hat.

Sure enough, just as Gu Jiao placed the child into the basket, which had been padded with soft cotton, the baby let out a loud wail.

The cry startled all three of them at once!

It was so loud, it felt like the baby’s voice was about to blow the top off their skulls!

Tang Yueshan’s face turned pale as a sheet as he gritted his teeth and hissed, “Please stop crying, little ancestor! You’ll cry the entire Jin army over here!”

“Waaah—Waaah—Waaah—!”

The baby clenched his tiny fists and wailed like the sky was collapsing!

“Benefactor!”

Suddenly, a woman holding a lantern appeared at the entrance of the alleyway.

She took quick, small steps as she approached Tang Yueshan. “It really is you!”

Tang Yueshan looked completely baffled.

Gu Jiao, however, recognized the woman. She was one of the people who had been harassed by Jin soldiers in the alley yesterday.

Since Gu Jiao hadn’t revealed herself at the time, the woman only recognized Tang Yueshan.

“Benefactor, you saved my lady yesterday. Have you forgotten?” She said, then glanced at the baby in Tang Yueshan’s arms. “Just born, isn’t he?”

Gu Jiao explained, “His father was killed by the Jin soldiers, and his mother is currently in hiding, trying to evade their pursuit. We’re trying to help him get out of the city.”

“Let me take him.” The woman handed the lantern to Tang Yueshan and reached out to gently receive the baby from Gu Jiao’s hands. “He’s probably hungry. My young lady has just given birth recently as well. We have a wet nurse at home, I’ll take him and feed him.”

Gu Jiao responded, “Thank you very much for your help.”

The woman quickly said, “If you don’t mind, please come with me.”

The group followed her into the residence.

It was a household of considerable wealth, but unfortunately, all the men had already been taken away, leaving behind only womenfolk and a few servant girls and elderly female servants to spend their days in fearful seclusion behind closed doors.

The woman carried the baby to the main chamber of the house, and almost immediately, the child’s crying ceased.

It seemed that he had been fed and was now content.

Roughly a quarter of an hour later, the woman emerged from the main chamber and came to the drawing room where she bowed respectfully to the three of them. She then turned to Tang Yueshan and said, “My lady is still in her confinement period after childbirth, and thus it is inconvenient for her to come out in person to thank her benefactor for saving her life. However, she has asked me to relay this message: if you don’t mind, she would be honored to help you take care of the child for now. Once your current matters are resolved, you may return to fetch him.”

The woman was not a fool, and the lady of the house clearly wasn't either.

They could see at a glance that the three were wearing Jin army armor and were clearly up to something beyond the ordinary.

Gu Jiao asked cautiously, “Would this bring danger upon your household?”

The woman answered with a warm and gentle expression, “Not at all. The wet nurse’s own child is in the room as well. The two little ones cry and wail all day long. Adding one more won't make a difference, and no one will notice. Besides, the Jin soldiers are only interested in looting and pillaging; they couldn’t care less about a few nursing infants.”

Gu Jiao thought it over carefully and concluded that this plan was indeed viable.

“What did she say?” Tang Yueshan asked.

Gu Jiao replied, “She’s offering to let us leave the child here temporarily and come back in a few days to retrieve him.”

“Will it expose us?” Tang Yueshan asked again, clearly still uneasy.

Gu Jiao said, “The chances are very slim. There’s already a wet nurse’s child and another newborn inside the room.”

With that reassurance, Tang Yueshan finally felt at ease.

Once the matter of the baby had been resolved, the three of them resumed their journey.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
