Not long after the duo left, Xie Hangzhou returned.
Hiding in an alleyway, Tang Yueshan watched the Jin soldiers ride off into the distance and finally let out a long sigh of relief.
But what Tang Yueshan hadn’t expected was that even after evading the powerful figures within the residence, they would run into trouble while trying to fetch their horses. Specifically, they ran headfirst into two Jin soldiers who had just finished robbing the townspeople.
It was a direct, face-to-face encounter.
This area was strictly off-limits to civilians, and any intruders were to be killed on sight!
The two Jin soldiers were immediately on high alert: one drew his sword to block them, while the other blew a bone whistle to raise the alarm.
Tang Yueshan thought grimly, It’s over. We’re totally done for.
“Can you still ride?” Tang Yueshan asked, glancing at Gu Jiao, who was slumped against his back.
Gu Jiao steadied herself and replied, “Yes.”
“Good. Then you better hold on tight!” Tang Yueshan placed her on the back of the Black Wind King, then vaulted up onto the horse himself.
There was likely no hope of escaping the city tonight, but fortunately Pucheng was large enough that as long as they could shake off the pursuers, they might still buy themselves a slim window of safety.
The Jin army’s forces were overwhelming. Even just to chase down two suspicious individuals, they had mobilized several hundred soldiers.
Tang Yueshan galloped at full speed, unable to resist glancing over his shoulder, and when he saw the dark mass of Jin troops charging after him and Gu Jiao like a tidal wave, a vein throbbed on his forehead. “Seriously? Just for the two of us? Do they really have to mobilize an entire army?”
He turned his head toward Gu Jiao, who was gripping the reins tightly, and shouted, “Girl! There are way too many of them! If they catch up to us, we’re in serious trouble!”
Indeed, they absolutely couldn’t be caught. Her splitting headache meant she couldn’t fight with her full strength.
She tugged hard on the reins and said, “Big Boss, go east!”
“Loose the arrows!”
A fierce command rang out from the Jin army behind them, followed immediately by a deafening storm of arrows whistling through the air like thunderbolts, raining down upon them with deadly fury!
Black Wind King darted into an alley to the front right, and the Black Wind Cavalry horse followed its lead.
The arrows slammed into the wooden shop fronts and doors with sharp thuds, with one arrow missing Tang Yueshan’s head by barely half an inch.
Thankfully, the Black Wind Cavalry horse had turned just in time!
Gu Jiao ordered, “Big Boss, keep going straight.”
Once they got out of the city center and into the outskirts where there were more valleys and forests, it would become far easier to find cover and hide.
Black Wind King unleashed its full speed, and under its lead, the rest of the Black Wind Cavalry surged forward at a pace that would normally be impossible.
Tang Yueshan felt as if he were flying through the air!
They had already left the first wave of Jin soldiers far behind, but thanks to the bone whistle signals, reinforcements kept intercepting them along their path.
Again and again, Black Wind King broke through encirclements, leaving waves of soldiers in the dust!
It led the charge with unmatched dominance, fearless like a true king!
As they charged into a mountain valley, Xie Hangzhou suddenly appeared, bursting out from a side path to ambush them!
The bastard had taken a shortcut!
Tang Yueshan’s temples throbbed with tension!
Just as a collision seemed inevitable, Black Wind King abruptly surged forward, rearing up and leaping with majestic strength clean over Xie Hangzhou’s head!
Xie Hangzhou’s broadsword, which he had swung in a horizontal arc, struck nothing but air.
Tang Yueshan’s Black Wind Cavalry horse, seizing the brief opening, dashed past Xie Hangzhou one after another in a blur!
Xie Hangzhou yanked his reins taut and frowned, staring at the warhorse that had just avoided his strike. It was hard to believe what he had just seen.
That warhorse was nothing short of extraordinary!
He was practically itching to capture it and offer it to his lord!
Unfortunately——
“General, should we pursue them?” a soldier asked.
Watching the two figures gradually disappear into the mountain valley, Xie Hangzhou replied coolly, “No. Up ahead is the Ghost Mountain.”
The Ghost Mountain was a forbidden zone in Pucheng, named for the frequent paranormal disturbances there. It was said that no one who entered ever came out alive.
Suddenly, the pounding of hooves echoed from behind, followed by a booming, mocking voice from a rough-sounding man. “Ha! Xie Zhoutian! Just a little mountain, and you, the top general under His Lordship, actually believe in ghost stories?”
Xie Hangzhou’s courtesy name was Zhoutian.
Xie Hangzhou turned around with a frown and shot a glance at the speaker. “Min Hongyi? Weren’t you accompanying His Lordship to the military camp?”
Min Hongyi smirked arrogantly. “I just got back. Heard there were two cunning thieves causing trouble in the city, and your men nearly killed their horses chasing them without catching a thing, so I figured I’d come help you out.”
Though both of them were trusted generals under Gongsun Yu, they had long vied for the position of top dog, never willing to yield to one another.
Xie Hangzhou ignored his taunt and said flatly, “They’ve entered the Ghost Mountain. There’s no way they’ll make it out alive.”
Min Hongyi sneered, “I don’t believe in that crap. I only care about seeing the living or finding the dead! If you don’t dare pursue them, then I will! Men, with me!”
“Yes, General Min!”
His subordinates saluted him in unison with cupped fists.
Min Hongyi bellowed, “Follow me into the Ghost Mountain!”
The soldiers all responded as one, “Yes, General Min!”
Min Hongyi grinned with satisfaction, then cast a smug glance toward Xie Hangzhou. “See that? Now that’s what real men of Jin look like. Your lot? Good for nothing but sneaking around like rats. When it comes to serious business, not one of them can be counted on!”
Xie Hangzhou replied coolly, “Don’t be so quick to talk big. Even His Lordship never dared to barge into this Ghost Mountain. If you let your temper cloud your judgment just to spite me, you’ll end up throwing away your own life, and those of your soldiers too.”
“Humph! You go be a coward if you want! I’m off to catch those intruders myself!”
Min Hongyi, having spoken those bold words, immediately led five hundred soldiers with great swagger and confidence into the depths of Ghost Mountain without the slightest hesitation.
……
After passing through the mountain valley, Gu Jiao and Tang Yueshan entered a dense forest where the canopy above grew increasingly thick, blocking out the remaining light.
The sky gradually darkened as dusk approached, and from time to time, the eerie cries of crows echoed from above, adding an unsettling ambiance to the forest.
Tang Yueshan sat stiffly atop his horse, an involuntary shiver running down his spine as he glanced warily around their surroundings, then leaned closer and asked in a low voice, “Girl, don’t you feel like this place has a creepy, bone-chilling vibe?”
“Nope.” Gu Jiao replied calmly, her eyes scanning the trees and foliage with interest. “It’s actually quite cool and refreshing.”
There was… a strange sense of familiarity about this place for her, like something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
“Are you afraid of ghosts?” Gu Jiao suddenly turned to look at Tang Yueshan with a peculiar expression, her gaze faintly amused.
Tang Yueshan scoffed dismissively and puffed out his chest. “Afraid? Me? That’s impossible! I, the Supreme Commander—”
Before he could finish boasting, Gu Jiao’s eyes widened dramatically as she suddenly pointed behind him and shouted, “Ah! A ghost!”
“Wuaaah!” Tang Yueshan cried out in fright and instinctively leaped from his horse straight onto the back of Gu Jiao’s horse without a second thought.
Gu Jiao: “……”
Black Wind King: “……”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
