Although the words were deliberately spoken for the Emperor of Great Yan to hear, everything in them was true. The fake Emperor had indeed issued an imperial decree to reinstate the Crown Prince, and he had also sealed off the Imperial Advisor's Hall, preparing to launch an investigation into both the Imperial Advisor's Hall itself and Shangguan Yan, who was recuperating there.

However, since they could not let his character setting collapse too drastically—whatever punishments had been imposed on the Crown Prince before, they could not exceed that limit now.

For the time being, Shangguan Yan was not in any real danger, merely stripped of her personal freedom.

However, the imperial palace was guarded so tightly that not even a breeze could slip through. They had no way to assassinate the fake Emperor, nor could they lead any army to "purge the Emperor’s side." These were indisputable facts.

Gu Chengfeng poured himself a cup of tea and took several large gulps before saying, "So what do we do next? The Crown Prince has been reinstated, and this fake Emperor will definitely stir up even more trouble."

"Wait a little longer." Grandaunt said as she cracked open a melon seed.

Gu Chengfeng was dumbfounded. "Still... still waiting?"

Grandaunt cast a glance at the room across from them and remarked lazily, "Let him regret it for a few more days."

In a situation like this, the most anxious person was not them but the Emperor of Great Yan. He needed to fully realize the grave mistake he had made back then and taste the bitter consequences of his own actions.

Moreover, there was another crucial reason for doing this.

Han shi had played such a ruthless move precisely to force them and the Emperor to take action. But if they remained motionless, Han shi would be unable to figure out their true intentions.

The unknown was the most terrifying thing.

The more they did nothing, the more Han shi would suspect that they were secretly planning an even greater act of revenge.

Until Han shi could uncover their hidden cards, she would not recklessly launch a second attack.

This, in turn, would buy them some breathing room and time to plan their next move.

"Speaking of which, will the Little County Princess be alright?" Gu Chengfeng asked.

Gu Jiao shook her head. "She’ll be fine. The Emperor dotes on the Little County Princess the most. No matter what his intentions are, the fake Emperor wouldn’t do anything to harm her."

Imperial Palace

Lingbo Academy had granted a two-day break, so the Little County Princess had obediently stayed within the imperial palace these past couple of days.

Many people in the palace had been replaced, but the little servant girl and the wet nurse by her side had not been changed.

She had just finished her lunch, and her wet nurse had gone to prepare her seasonal wardrobe. Children grew quickly, and last year’s clothes no longer fit.

"Grannie."

The Little County Princess appeared at the doorway, hugging a small pillow.

The wet nurse smiled warmly. "Little County Princess, what brings you here? Weren’t you supposed to take a nap?"

The Little County Princess huffed as she walked in, still clutching her pillow. She looked up at her and asked, "Can I sleep here with you?"

The wet nurse was briefly stunned but then chuckled. "Of course, you can. But why do you suddenly want to sleep in my room, Little County Princess?"

The Little County Princess clumsily climbed onto the bed, placing her small pillow next to the wet nurse’s. Lowering her head, she mumbled, "I don’t want to sleep over there with imperial uncle anymore. He’s a bad person."

The wet nurse was startled. She hurried to the door, glanced outside, then carefully shut it. Returning to the bedside, she sat down and whispered, "Little County Princess, you mustn’t say such things carelessly. His Majesty dotes on you the most. You cannot speak ill of him like this."

The Little County Princess said, "He is not my real imperial uncle."

The wet nurse’s face turned pale. "Princess!"

The Little County Princess, already feeling drowsy, flopped onto the pillow and soon fell asleep.

The wet nurse watched her small sleeping figure and felt a chill run down her spine.

She gently covered the Little County Princess with a thin quilt and tiptoed out of the room.

Eunuch Yu was already waiting outside.

She was not surprised and calmly greeted him with a bow. "Eunuch Yu."

Eunuch Yu’s expression was unreadable as he asked lightly, "What did the Little County Princess say?"

The wet nurse respectfully replied, "Little County Princess said she doesn’t want to sleep near His Majesty anymore. She called him a bad person… and also said that he is not her imperial uncle."

Eunuch Yu smiled faintly. "And what do you think?"

The wet nurse smiled and said, "It’s likely that His Majesty has been too occupied with state affairs recently and has neglected her. When children get upset, they won’t even acknowledge their parents, let alone an uncle. To be fair, the Little County Princess has been spoiled by His Majesty. Which other child would dare throw a tantrum like this in front of him?"

Eunuch Yu’s smile grew more satisfied. "It’s good that you understand, Grannie Liu."

The wet nurse said respectfully, "Please rest assured, Eunuch Yu. I have always been loyal to you."

Eunuch Yu adopted a lofty tone and sneered, "Zhang Dequan is incompetent, he can’t even secure a decent position for you. I, however, am different. As long as you continue working under me, benefits will come your way in due time."

The wet nurse immediately bowed with deep gratitude. "I will remember your kindness, Eunuch Yu. The Little County Princess has a strong temper, and when she starts making a fuss, it never ends. I worry that she might accidentally offend His Majesty. Why not let her stay with me for the next couple of days?"

Eunuch Yu considered this and nodded. "That works. His Majesty has indeed been busy with government affairs and has little time to attend to the Little County Princess. However, let me be clear, now that she is in your care, you must serve her well and ensure that nothing goes wrong. You should know better than anyone what the consequences will be if you make a mistake."

The wet nurse trembled slightly and quickly reassured him, "I will not disappoint you, Eunuch Yu."

Eunuch Yu hummed in acknowledgment, satisfied, and then left.

The wet nurse returned to the room and gazed at the peacefully sleeping Little County Princess with a look of deep affection. Letting out a long breath, she finally felt relieved.

……

The Imperial Advisor’s Hall was completely sealed off by the imperial guards, leaving not a single disciple able to leave.

Yu He led a few junior disciples to the front entrance of the Imperial Advisor's Hall, staring down the group of imperial guards stationed there. With a firm voice, he demanded, "Who gave you the authority to blockade the Imperial Advisor’s Hall?"

Normally, this situation should have been handled by the eldest disciple, Ye Qing, but unfortunately, Ye Qing had suffered serious injuries and was currently recovering in the purple bamboo grove.

The leading imperial guard smirked and unfurled the imperial decree in his hands, arrogantly waving it in front of Yu He. "Open your damned eyes and take a good look. Do you see what this is?"

Yu He’s eyes widened in disbelief. "How could this be..."

The imperial guard raised an eyebrow and sneered, "Your Imperial Advisor’s Hall colluded with the Third Princess to conspire against the throne. We are acting under imperial orders to investigate. If you have any complaints, why don’t you go and appeal directly to His Majesty?"

A young disciple, still full of youthful defiance, huffed in anger and shouted, "Then why don’t you let us go and file a complaint? Guarding the gates like this and keeping us trapped inside—what kind of justice is that?"

The imperial guard let out a mocking laugh. "This is an imperial decree."

"You—!" The young disciple clenched his fists in fury.

Yu He stepped in front of his junior brother, coldly sweeping his gaze over the imperial guards before saying in a low voice, "Forget it. Let’s go."

One of the younger disciples whispered hesitantly, "Senior Brother Yu He, could it be... that Master really colluded with the Third Princess?"

Yu He halted in his steps and turned to face them, his expression serious. "You must believe in Master! He would never do anything to harm His Majesty!"

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
