The night was dark, and the wind howled.
Gu Chengfeng was being relentlessly pursued by An Hun, forced to flee in every direction.
He knew that An Hun was formidable, but he wasn’t weak either. So why was the distance between them getting shorter and shorter?
In truth, the fact that An Hun was closing in was already highly unusual.
Under normal circumstances, no one could escape more than ten zhang from An Hun’s grasp in the first place, yet Gu Chengfeng had managed to run an entire circle around the imperial palace.
Still, he was reaching his limit!
His legs were burning, and he felt as if he were about to leave a trail of smoke behind him from running so fast!
Forget it!
The priority now was to get out of the imperial palace first!
Gu Chengfeng leaped out from the main gate of the inner palace and bolted straight toward the outer court.
An Hun remained hot on his heels, refusing to give him a moment of respite.
At this point, Gu Chengfeng no longer held any hope of shaking him off. If he could just lure An Hun out of the imperial palace in the opposite direction, it would at least buy that girl a little more time.
With the desperation of a soul fighting for reincarnation, Gu Chengfeng sprinted through the night at full speed.
Finally, he leaped into the air and soared past the last towering gate of the outer court, breaking free from the confines of the imperial palace.
By now, An Hun was less than two zhang behind him.
Damn it, he couldn’t hold on much longer.
He absolutely could not afford to get caught!
His meager martial skills wouldn’t even be enough to fill the gaps between An Hun’s teeth!
But there was an old saying in this world: the more you fear something, the more likely it is to happen.
Just as Gu Chengfeng gritted his teeth and prepared to push himself beyond his limits in a desperate bid to escape, An Hun suddenly appeared right behind him.
A deathly cold hand, just like the skeletal grasp of a corpse, flashed forward in a blur and seized him by the collar!
Gu Chengfeng’s heart lurched violently, as if it had nearly leaped out of his chest!
He had survived the brutal Battle of Yuegu City, fought against the army of the State of Chen for five days and five nights, yet never once had he truly felt as though he had stepped foot into the gates of the underworld.
At this moment, however, the hand gripping him did not feel like that of a mere death warrior; it was as if the very claws of the underworld’s ruler had reached out and seized him!
He couldn’t die!
He absolutely couldn’t die!
He hadn’t lived enough yet!
There was only one last move left!
Though countless thoughts seemed to flash through his mind, in reality, they all passed in just a single instant. In a swift motion, he reached into his robe and pulled out something hidden within.
An Hun assumed he was about to throw a hidden weapon for a last-ditch assassination attempt.
But to his utter shock, he saw Gu Chengfeng, through the faint reflection of his shadow, raise that mysterious object to his lips and smear something onto them.
What kind of trick was this?!
In the very next second, Gu Chengfeng suddenly twisted his head around with a dramatic flourish. His lips, now an eye-catching fiery red, puckered up as he leaned in toward An Hun with deep, smoldering affection.
“Mwah~”
An Hun: What the actual hell?!
For a split second, sheer shock crashed through An Hun’s entire being like a thunderbolt from the heavens. His breath hitched violently, his meridians twisted in utter disarray, and his internal force which was strong enough to dominate battlefields was doused in an instant, as if a bucket of ice-cold water had been dumped over it!
The flow of his internal force was completely disrupted, and in a dramatic collapse, he plummeted toward the ground.
And during his humiliating descent, overwhelmed by a mix of utter disgust and absolute horror, he flung Gu “Fiery Red Lips” Chengfeng as far away from himself as humanly possible!
An Hun, a man who had dominated the battlefield and struck fear into countless souls for years, had never experienced such a mind-numbing shock in his entire life.
Just what kind of utterly shameless opponent was this?!
Back in the day, Gu Chengfeng had been a proper, dignified, and serious young master—yes, truly, a very proper one.
But alas, the people in that wretched courtyard… No, scratch that, even the horses weren’t proper! It was only natural that spending too much time around them had tainted him.
That being said, An Hun was still An Hun. Even though that absurd ambush had nearly scared his very soul out of his body, causing his three ethereal spirits and seven mortal forms to scatter, his battle-honed instincts prevailed.
Just as he was about to hit the ground, his unparalleled reflexes kicked in, and he forcefully reclaimed control of his internal force.
With a powerful strike of his palm against the earth, he propelled himself into the air, executing a flawless midair somersault before landing steadily on solid ground.
Meanwhile, Gu Chengfeng, having been flung away by An Hun’s own disgust-fueled reflex, seized the momentum and, with a whoosh, vanished into the night without a trace!
From somewhere deep within the darkness, a voice as infuriating as it was gleeful rang out, “Many thanks, Lord An Hun——”
An Hun did not give chase. He knew better than anyone the strength he had used to hurl that fool away. If he pursued now, he would end up straying too far from the imperial palace.
With that, he turned around and made his way back to the cold palace.
The moment he stepped into the courtyard, he was met with Han shi’s furious expression as she stormed toward him, her eyes burning with rage, “Where did you just run off to?! The Emperor has been taken!”
An Hun remained utterly unbothered, his tone cool and detached. “I know. I’ll bring him back.”
……
After Gu Jiao carried the Emperor out of Han shi’s quarters, she headed straight for the dog hole that led outside the imperial palace.
Since the Emperor had been knocked unconscious and couldn’t crawl through on his own, Gu Jiao had no choice but to stuff him in.
Who could have predicted that the Emperor, having grown rather plump, would get completely stuck in the narrow passage?
Gu Jiao furrowed her small brows in deep concentration, then, without a hint of hesitation, lifted her foot and delivered a solid kick to his imperial backside, forcefully booting him through to the other side.
Afterward, she quickly crawled through herself.
She had no idea how long Gu Chengfeng would be able to stall for time, but she couldn’t afford to waste even a single moment.
Hoisting the Emperor onto her shoulders once more, she sprinted toward the designated meeting point at full speed, where the Black Wind King was already in position, waiting.
But fate, as always, had its own cruel plans.
Before she could even make it a full li(approx. 500 m) away, An Hun had already caught up.
She watched with her own eyes as An Hun unsheathed his treasured sword, and with a single effortless strike, sliced clean through the layers of snow silkworm thread draped over the palace walls.
Then, with impeccable grace and an air of effortless composure, he leaped over in a single fluid motion.
As expected of a true expert—what a flawless move!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
