Shao Qingyuan returned not long after and even brought a coffin back.
Gu Yuwen was done with his makeup and carried in. The mourning hall had also been set up.
It was already noon. Madam Song and Madam Mao came back from buying food and handed it to the aunties who were busy in the kitchen.
The people who came to help thought that Gu Yundong and the others had paid for the groceries. After all, no one believed that Gu Yiping and the others would be willing to spend this money.
When Luo Qi woke up, the Luo family’s house was already decorated in white.
She got off the bed and staggered. The auntie beside her quickly supported her. "Slow down. I’ll take you to the mourning hall. Burn more paper money for your mother. Ah."
Luo Qi nodded almost imperceptibly. She walked to the central room and looked at the coffin. Her tears fell.
Gu Yundong helped her to her knees and kowtowed to Gu Yuwen a few times.
There were not many rules on Linxun Island. Most of the people here were criminals, so when they died, they would be burned on the spot. Their families could just take their ashes back. There was no such thing as a wake.
However, when Shao Qingyuan went to town to buy a coffin, he met Brother Dao.
Nobody knew what he said to Brother Dao, but the camp agreed to let Luo Qi keep watch overnight and cremate her tomorrow.
Luo Qi wiped her tears and kowtowed heavily to Gu Yundong and Shao Qingyuan. Then, she knelt in front of the mourning hall and silently burned paper for Gu Yuwen.
The neighbors had all gone back. Gu Yundong could not leave such a child alone in the mourning hall to guard the night. Besides, she had promised Gu Yuwen that she would take good care of her.
Hence, she and Shao Qingyuan rested in the Luo residence that day. In fact, they didn’t sleep much.
The next day, a few neighbors still came over to help. They pulled the coffin out and cremated it.
"Mother..." Luo Qi’s eyes were red and swollen. When she saw the flames soaring into the sky, she almost fainted from crying.
If Gu Yundong had not been hugging her, she would have rushed into the sea of fire.
The people around her felt their hearts ache.
After the fire was extinguished, Gu Yundong put the ashes in a bottle and let Luo Qi carry them home.
Luo Qi silently walked into the house and opened a large box.
Gu Yundong saw that there were two small boxes in the box. Luo Qi opened the two small boxes and took out two bottles.
Gu Yundong took a closer look and realized that these two bottles were also ashes.
One was Luo Qi’s father, Luo Youshan; and the other was Gu Yuwen’s mother, Concubine Qiu.
Luo Qi placed the three bottles on the table and pursed her lips. After a while, she turned around and looked at Gu Yundong. She looked like she wanted to say something but hesitated.
Gu Yundong patted her head. "What are you trying to say?"
"I, can I..." She lowered her head slightly, not knowing what to say. After a while, she finally took a deep breath and said with a choked voice, "Can I bring them along? I want to take them away from Linxun Island and find a place to bury them properly. This way, I can visit them in the future and burn some paper money for them."
As she spoke, her tears fell again.
Gu Yundong sighed. When Luo Qi heard this, she shrank back and thought that she did not agree. She felt terrible.
Gu Yundong tied up the three bottles of ashes with a cloth and said, "Of course. This is your filial piety. I won’t disagree."
Luo Qi’s eyes lit up. "Re-really? I can really take them away?"
