So, Vera Xavier declared with a self-righteous air, "Of course not. Susan Caldwell must have done something completely outrageous, and the victim’s family couldn’t contain their anger. That’s why they came to demand justice from her."
In reality, after the hotel manager told Vera that the scarf stall owner had been beaten and critically injured two days ago, she had immediately sent Jack Judd to gather people and make a series of arrangements.
As she saw it, she had already made a sworn enemy of Susan Caldwell. Given Susan’s vicious nature, she definitely wouldn’t let Vera off the hook.
And she only had Jack Judd and Aaron Cheney with her. The three of them combined probably couldn’t even take on Leo Wright by himself.
Furthermore, with the status Susan Caldwell was flaunting, it would be all too easy for her to harm them. Vera refused to just sit back and wait to be attacked, so she decided to use every resource at her disposal to go after Susan Caldwell.
She just hadn’t expected things to go so smoothly.
Nathaniel Nathan watched her, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. "Is that so?"
Vera Xavier nodded quickly, but then another thought occurred to her. "Why did the police who came for Susan Caldwell today say she was an impostor? Did someone who couldn’t stand her antics report her?"
"I suppose so," Nathaniel said nonchalantly.
Just then, Jack Judd knocked and entered. Beaming as if he were presenting a treasure, he asked Vera and Nathaniel, "Nathaniel, Vera, I did a great job today, didn’t I?"
Vera shot him a warning look, but he was too excited to notice her expression. He said enthusiastically, "When Vera told me to find that beaten vendor two days ago, I just knew Susan Caldwell was in for a world of hurt!"
Vera was speechless.
’Getting your lie exposed in public feels awful! Especially right after I denied it!’
Nathaniel glanced at Jack Judd, then let his gaze settle on Vera. "Oh, really? Now that’s interesting."
Vera turned away, not daring to meet his eyes.
But Jack Judd, as if he’d just been praised, immediately continued with relish, "But Nathaniel was the one with the master plan! First, he took me to deal with the leader of those thugs, then had me take them to find the family members who were raising a stink. We combined the two groups into one big force to go after Susan Caldwell..."
Vera stole a glance at Nathaniel. He looked completely calm and unbothered. When he saw her looking, his eyes met hers, and she quickly averted her gaze.
Jack Judd continued, "And the best part was when Nathaniel had me call and report Susan Caldwell as a fraud! Otherwise, that woman would have been even more brazen today!"
At this, Vera was at a loss for words. ’Alright, so neither of us was being honest with the other.’
’Also, when Nathaniel decides to deal with someone, he doesn’t mess around. His methods are even more thorough and practiced than mine. But he’s a soldier... isn’t this kind of behavior a little... inappropriate for him?’
As if reading her mind, Nathaniel said coolly, "You use different methods for different people. Being polite to your enemy is being cruel to yourself."
Vera was speechless.
After finishing his story, Jack Judd waited, expecting to be praised. But then he noticed that both of their expressions were cold, and the atmosphere in the room had turned a little strange.
He looked quizzically from Vera to Nathaniel.
Finally, Nathaniel said coolly, "You’re not needed here anymore. Go hang out with Aaron Cheney."
Jack Judd gave a slight laugh and quickly turned to leave.
After the door closed, Nathaniel stood up, walked over to Vera’s side, and said, "Vera Xavier, how many other things are you hiding from me?"
