“That’s excellent!” Qiao Xuan exclaimed with a radiant smile and a touch of pride in her voice. “My husband always praises my virtues and impeccable manners. He truly believes in my goodness.”

Secondary Concubine Shi. “…”. She was unable to dispute Shao Yunduan’s opinion.

This revelation surprised many, causing their gazes to shift instinctively towards Tian Shanshan.

Tian Shanshan maintained a composed exterior, but beneath the surface, anger simmered. She couldn’t fathom why everyone was fixated on her. Their comments had nothing to do with her!

In the distance, the Fourth Princess Consort and her entourage approached, overhearing the conversation.

One of the Perfecture Lord’s Princess Consorts chimed in with a sly smile, “Madame Shao is quite sharp-witted. After all, a concubine’s daughter is just that – a concubine’s daughter. Officer Shao, you exude gentility and refinement, a perfect match!”

A few other ladies chuckled and exchanged hushed remarks.

The Fourth Princess Consort chose to remain silent.

Princess Consort felt a twinge of embarrassment, her refined nature clashing with Qiao Xuan’s assertiveness. She couldn’t help but resent that Qiao Xuan’s competitiveness might tarnish Officer Shao’s reputation.

Qiao Xuan, a mere concubine’s daughter, seemed to be making matters worse.

Princess Consort even regretted not declining the Fourth Sister-in-law’s invitation the day before. She shouldn’t have brought Qiao Xuan along.

Auntie Fu sighed inwardly, observing Princess Consort’s lack of response.

Princess Consort epitomized dignity and grace, always mindful of her image to avoid any criticism for impoliteness or lack of virtue. However, there were times when she went to great lengths to maintain this facade.

Secondary Concubine Shi’s actions were clearly aimed at humiliating Madame Shao, an injustice that shouldn’t be allowed to persist.

Madame Shao had been brought to this gathering by Princess Consort, and it was incumbent upon her to defend Madame Shao, especially when Officer Shao possessed such exceptional talents. If Madame Shao were to become deeply upset and complained to Officer Shao, what impression would it leave on him?

Auntie Fu, though aware of this delicate situation, dared not voice her concerns. She offered a reassuring smile and said, “Princess Consort, allow me to check on the situation.”

Princess Consort nodded and exchanged a meaningful glance with Auntie Fu, conveying her desire for Auntie Fu to discreetly remind Qiao Xuan to maintain her composure. This unspoken communication left Auntie Fu sighing inwardly.

With a warm greeting, Auntie Fu approached them and suggested, “Concubine, Madame Shao, perhaps it’s time for Lixia to change her attire?”

Secondary Concubine Shi nodded with a smile, admitting, “You are right; I almost forgot about that.”

She then singled out one of the maids and instructed, “Lixia, go change your clothes.”

Lixia turned towards Qiao Xuan, who simply nodded and encouraged, “Go ahead.”

Though Lixia held significant importance in Qiao Xuan’s life, only Qiao Xuan and perhaps Lixia herself were aware of this. Others often regarded maids and servants as expendable pawns or scapegoats. Even if someone attempted to manipulate Lixia, it would unlikely reflect negatively on Qiao Xuan.

Lixia felt a hint of nervousness but trusted her mistress implicitly. If Qiao Xuan asked this of her, it must be for a good reason.

Approaching with a gracious smile, the Fourth Princess Consort inquired, “Madame Shao, is everything now in order?”
