Chapter 3181: Mutual Interests Were the Most Reliable Foundation
Well, women were often soft-hearted creatures. A man’s sweet words, on top of the way that he was loyal to only one wife while other men kept many concubines, would be enough to move them to tears.
All in all, Yin Qing and Zhuo Cheran’s relationship could be considered an evenly matched one. The relationship had mutual benefits, and the interests of both parties involved were mostly aligned.
Mutual interests were the most reliable foundation that any relationship could have.
Zhuo Cheran relied on Yin Qing to provide him with powerful modern weapons.
In return, Yin Qing gained the love of an emperor, and exclusively at that.
Ning Shu simply didn’t believe that Zhuo Cheran had no desire for the things Yin Qing possessed.
After all, this world’s circumstances made it impossible for firearms to be produced here. The realm’s economic conditions simply wouldn’t allow it.
Here, planning to mass-produce firearms was like trying to build castles in the air.
Zhuo Cheran had no other option but to rely on the weapons that Yin Qing obtained from a modern plane.
But as an emperor, could he truly be at ease relying on someone else?Ning Shu didn’t have much positivity about this so-called love that they had.
Moreover, Yin Qing clearly had the means to ascend the throne herself, so why did she insist on confining herself to the inner palace?
Was love really that important?
If their love was so grand and eternal, they should use it to generate electricity.
“Miss, why are you up?” Lianqiao pushed the door open. Upon entering the room, she spotted Ning Shu sitting at the table and sipping tea, wearing only her inner garments.
Ning Shu immediately pressed her legs tightly together. The original host was the young miss of a wealthy family, who was always mindful of her manners and appearance.
Her upbringing had instilled decorum into her very bones.
For commoners, noble daughters like her often seemed haughty and untouchable. When the entrustor was sold into a brothel, her clients found twisted pleasure in breaking her.
She thought she was so high and mighty, right? She was very proud, wasn’t she?
They took pleasure in crushing her arrogance and making her kneel before them and serving them. That feeling of conquest sent chills of ecstasy from their heels to their crowns.
Lianqiao quickly grabbed a robe and draped it over Ning Shu’s shoulders. “Miss, cover yourself up. Spring mornings are still chilly. You mustn’t catch a cold.”
Ning Shu responded with an ‘Mm.’ Then, with Lianqiao’s help, she put on her outer garments.
After freshening up, she headed to the front yard to pay respects to the old madame, as well as her father and her mother.
On the way, she encountered a few concubine-born half-sisters who looked at her with a mix of envy and resentment.
Ning Shu felt nothing in particular for her concubine-born half-sisters. After the Marquis Xuanping’s household fell, these half-sisters of hers would face the same fate that the original host did. They were either sold into brothels or reduced to servants.
They were forever marked as slaves.
Ning Shu’s concubine-born half-sisters saw Ning Shu’s tolerant gaze toward them and found themselves speechless.
She looked at them, and they looked at her, all in awkward silence.
Ning Shu, along with her concubine-born half-sisters who trailed behind her, went to the old madame’s residence to pay their respects.
Before Ning Shu even stepped inside the old madame’s hall, she could already hear bursts of laughter coming from inside.
Lianqiao lifted the partition curtain and allowed Ning Shu to walk in.
The old madame’s living quarters were modest in decoration, but every item in them was of excellent quality.
As Ning Shu stood in such an environment, she couldn’t help but feel as though she was in the Jia family residence from Dream of the Red Chamber.
“Zhuru, you’re here,” the old madame called out while beckoning to Ning Shu.
Almost instantly, Ning Shu could feel several jealous stares drilling into her back.
These half-sisters of hers clearly envied the fact that she was favored by the old madame.
Ning Shu inwardly shook her head. To have a stable and peaceful life and still have the luxury of plotting against each other was, in a way, a blessing.
But when this nest was overturned, none of the eggs within it would remain intact.
With small, delicate steps, Ning Shu approached the old madame. She moved gracefully and ensured that her skirt swayed only slightly.
The old madame introduced the man standing next to her to Ning Shu. “This is your cousin, Gu Fanlu. His grandmother and I were full-blooded sisters.”
The man wore a white robe. His hair was tied neatly with a headpiece on top of his head. His face bore a gentle smile, exuding an unassuming aura. He gave off the impression of a pure white rabbit with a pair of long ears perked upright, but dressed in human clothes.
How cute.
“Cousin,” Gu Fanlu said while clasping his hands and bowing to Ning Shu in greeting.
