Li Zhao, the lean man who had served aboard the giant ship from back then. It was clear he was one of Gong Rong’s people.
“Miss Xu, our young master would like to see you,” Li Zhao said coldly, his tone strictly business. “Please come with us.”
Ning Shu crossed her arms and lifted her chin slightly. “How did you find me?”
“That’s not something you need to worry about,” Li Zhao replied as he stepped aside to clear a path for her.
Behind him stood a sizeable group of bodyguards, filling the stairwell outside her door.
Ning Shu swept her spiritual consciousness across them and immediately sensed they were all armed. Their arms were completed with silencers, and they were clearly more than ready to take her out.
They stared at her with wary eyes.
So many people just to fetch her. Ning Shu couldn’t tell if she should feel flattered or just plain annoyed.
“Please come with us. Our young master insists on seeing you.”
Ning Shu suddenly asked, “How old is your ‘young master’ anyway?”An old cucumber trying to act fresh! Why was he still insisting people call him young master?
Li Zhao hesitated for a second before replying, “Our young master looks young.”
Ning Shu: Ah. Can’t argue with that logic.
“Your mother’s at the senior center watching a dance performance,” Li Zhao said as he pulled out his phone. On the screen was a video feed of Mother Xu sitting on a bench, watching others dance.
In other words, Mother Xu was now under surveillance.
Ning Shu hadn’t expected them to move this fast. Then again, her mother’s regular dialysis treatments made their location less of a secret. Some details were just too easy to trace.
She stared at Li Zhao with a frosty look. He put his phone away and added, “We won’t harm your mother. Our young master just wants to see you one last time before he dies.”
He also hinted there might be a reward for her cooperation.

She didn’t want any kind of reward. There was no such thing as a free lunch in this world.
Also, Gong Rong ‘only wanted to see her’ before dying? Please.
She’d sooner believe in ghosts than believe a word out of Gong Rong’s mouth.
Especially now—he was using her mother to threaten her and his men had shown up armed to the teeth. If this wasn’t shady, she didn’t know what was.
Ning Shu smiled sweetly. “Alright then. I’ll come to see Gong Rong. Honestly, I’ve kind of missed him.”
She followed them downstairs. Outside the residential complex, a long line of black luxury cars was parked in formation.
The display was borderline terrifying.
Li Zhao couldn’t let his guard down. The last time, their young master had been kidnapped right under their noses. That humiliation still burned.
Even with all these men, Li Zhao couldn’t shake his unease.
What unsettled him even more was that the other side, faced with this entire show of force, looked completely unfazed. It only made him more nervous.
Ning Shu took out her phone and called her mother. When the call connected, she could hear loud music in the background.
“Mom, something came up. You’ll have to make something to eat on your own tonight.”
After she hung up, Li Zhao reached out his hand and said, “May I please have your phone for safekeeping?”
He said ‘please,’ but his attitude was anything but polite.
Ning Shu snorted. “Is Gong Rong a head of state now? Why can’t I bring a phone just to see him?”
She stared him down. The only reason she hadn’t made a move was because she was worried about her mother. If it came to a fight, her winning was uncertain, but escaping was definitely doable.
What she feared most was that her mother was now being watched.
D*mn it. She just knew this wouldn’t be over so easily.
There was really no end to this, was there?
Li Zhao held her gaze for a moment before backing off. “Please don’t do anything rash. You can keep your phone.”
