The plane landed in Mahali, and Jiang Nuan called a taxi to return to her place.
She lived in a residential community on the outskirts of Mahali. Most of the houses here were small two-story villas, not very large, with a small garden outside and a modest lawn. The area was well landscaped, and less than two bus stops away was a small park where everyone would go picnicking on weekends. Many small animals lived nearby, like birds and squirrels, which were commonly seen. People did not drive them away because of their presence but instead provided clean water and food for them in designated spots.
"Oh, Susan, welcome back."
"Susan, the weather is really nice today."
"Susan, how does it feel to be home? How’s your mom, grandpa, and grandma? May God bless you all."
Along the way, familiar neighbors greeted her, and Jiang Nuan responded to each one. When she returned home, she changed clothes, took a shower, and wearing a loose T-shirt, she took a beer up to the attic, just in time to see the lights on in the house opposite, which had been vacant for a long time.
"Didn’t Tom say he moved to Los Angeles? Could he be back?"
Tom was her neighbor across the street, an eighty-year-old man who was an expert fisherman, often bringing back a bucket full of fish. Jiang Nuan had a good relationship with him. Every time he returned from fishing, he would give her a few, and in return, she occasionally made fish soup for him.
But before she went abroad, Tom’s son came all the way from Los Angeles to take care of the old man, so the house across the street was vacated.
She remembered feeling lonely after the house across the street was unoccupied, but she didn’t expect to see the lights on as soon as she returned.
It was already late in Mahali, so despite her curiosity, Jiang Nuan couldn’t go across the street to knock on the door at this hour. She could only suppress her curiosity as she observed the house opposite, enjoying the night breeze while finishing her beer.
After a while, she discarded the beer can, stretched lazily, and taking one last look at the lit window across the street, she went back to her room to sleep.
She didn’t notice that the gaze following her from the plane never left her, lingering on her until she went inside, and only reluctantly withdrawing then.

Jiang Nuan felt something strange about herself recently.
It seemed like her luck was overflowing.
For example, in the morning when she rushed out without having breakfast, she would always meet a neighbor who ’happened’ to have extra bread and milk for her. At the supermarket, she won a prize while buying fruit, which was a top-grade steak worth ten times more than the fruit. Dresses were always on discount when she shopped in the store street. There were also many odd things happening at home; she couldn’t remember trimming her lawn, yet it was always neatly mowed. All sorts of little trinkets left by neighbors always appeared at her doorstep. Sometimes fresh vegetables, sometimes fish, sometimes fruits, and once even a bouquet, yet she never saw which neighbor brought them.
Until one weekend, when Jiang Nuan came home to find another bucket at the door, with two lively bass swimming inside, she couldn’t hold back any longer.
After bringing the bucket and fish into the house, she changed clothes, took the baked cake she bought from the store street in the afternoon, and knocked on the door across the street.
Tom was a typical foreign man, capable and warm but rather laid-back in life. She had visited the house across the street before, but Tom’s lawn was always a mess, with unknown wildflowers growing on the grass. But this time, when Jiang Nuan pushed open the door and saw the small garden, it felt like a refreshing change.
