Chapter 40
After some arguing over who’s gonna sleep in the bed, Lu Xinyi gave up and let her husband share the bed with her. She felt a bit guilty that she’d consider to kick him off the bed when he was the man of the house. They decided to just put some pillows in between and it will be fine.
She took a quick nap after their lunch and woke up late in the afternoon with Shen Yi lying beside her, deep in his thoughts. He was twirling a stand on her long hair between his fingers. His eyes seemed cold and distant but she had known that he was always like this when he was thinking or preoccupied.
Even after their cruise vacation, Lu Xinyi learned that he’d always return to his impassive and indifferent facade that everyone acknowledged. She’d accepted that maybe this was one of his defenses aside from his self-control.
“What’s up?” she asked, “Something’s up?”
“I checked your application at Silver Leaf,” he replied but not bothering to look at her as he continued to touch her hair. “They couldn’t find it on their records.”
“What?!” Lu Xinyi sat up and faced him. Shen Yi kept his eyes on her hair but adjusted himself on the bed. “But that’s impossible. I sent it with Meng Jiao’s application.”
“You sure?” Finally, his eyes met hers. “Because the only one they have on the record was hers. No records of any application from Lu Xinyi.”
“I…” she was rendered speechless. What more can she say? Shen Yi wouldn’t lie about something like this.
She could clearly remember how she was so excited to fill up the application form and gave it to Meng Jiao to pass since she couldn’t send it herself.
Did her ex-best friend betrayed her the second time?
That wouldn’t be surprising since she’d already seduced Gong Yijun and managed to break their relationship.
“Why are you crying?” Shen Yi’s voice distracted her from her thoughts. It was only then she realized that she was indeed crying.
Damn, whoever said you couldn’t have a heartbreak for losing a best friend? But then Lu Xinyi knew that it was one-sided in her part. Losing a friend made her question the very core of her being.
What did this say about her as a person?
Why did Meng Jiao throw away their friendship for a man?
They’d met at school and had been friends for 15 years. Meng Jiao was the first friend she had after her parents passed away. She had helped her through a bad phase in her life and felt they were close.
It was pretty clear that they had started to drift apart when Gong Yijun came into the scene.
Lu Xinyi wiped away her tears.
“I’m okay. Just a little upset that she did this to me.” ρꪖꪕᦔꪖꪕꪫꪣꫀꪶ
“Forget about her. She’d chosen her own path, you should just focus on what’s waiting for you in the future,” he said. “By the way, can you be my temporary assistant for a while? Just making sure my schedule is on time so I wouldn’t be late.”
“Sure, no problem but I don’t think I packed enough business casual clothes on this trip.”
Shen Yi quirked a brow as he regarded her.
“Did the card I gave you not working?”
Oh, that black card that he gave her after their wedding day?
“It sure works. I ordered two boxes of pizza and chicken nuggets when Xiulan visited.”
“…”
“What?”
Shen Yi had expected her to do some shopping as soon as he gave that card. Who would have thought that the first thing she would do was to buy some kind of fast foods with it? Technically as his wife, Lu Xinyi should throw an absurd amount of money to establish her status but she didn’t.
Lu Xinyi flopped back on the bed, closed her eyes and kept silent. Her stomach growled making her husband chuckle. She was hungry again.
After a long silence…
“Go out with me.”
Her eyes languidly opened and looked at him.
“Go out? As in go with you somewhere or go on a date with you?” she asked.
“The latter one,” he replied.
Lu Xinyi could only stare at him as if he was playing a mind trick on her.
“Are you serious?” She wasn’t so sure if she was ready to take another step for him.
“Yeah.” He slipped out of the bed and checked his wristwatch. It was still too early for dinner. Maybe they could take a walk for a while.
“Fine. As long as you will feed me well.”
“You really don’t have to remind me, darling.”
Lu Xinyi groaned and stretched her arms before slithering out of the bed to take a change of clothes from her suitcase.
